Blade column on Larry Smith
A great job by Maureen telling the story of the former Falcon (and recipient of a 1995 loss at Missouri handed to him by his alma mater!

Jim Young, ex-Miami, Army and Purdue, among others, coach used to be my neighbor when I was in grade school. He was Smith's mentor when they both coached at Shawnee High School back in the 60s. Smith succeeded Young as head coach then followed him into the coaching ranks. Both of them had some great teams at Shawnee.

Hmmm... I've always heard of it referred to as "Lima Shawnee".
Was this Jim Young the same one that played FB at BG in the mid-50's?

actually, it's not at all like calling is "toledo perrysburg" or "dayton troy." unlike your two examples, Shawnee High School has Lima mailing address, thus qualifying at is "Lima Shawnee." for other such examples, see Massillon Perry and Massillon Jackson (high schools in Perry and Jackson townships, respectively, but with Massillon mailing addresses. Neither are the tigers of Massillon Washington High in Massillon proper.h2ovillerocket wrote:And oh, yeah-it may be a great story but do your homework lady. Ther is no such animal as Lima Shawnee. That's like saying Toledo Perrysburg or Dayton Troy.

In fact, I'd go as far as to say "Rossford IS Wood County!"

FYI, Larry Smith took my mother-in-law as his date to his senior prom. Not a big deal, but that's my Larry Smith connection.
And having grown up in Putnam County and watching Vince Koza doing the sports on Ch. 35, I seem to recall his referencing the above mentioned school as "Lima Shawnee". If it was something else, wouldn't it be Fort Shawnee? But since it isn't "Fort", I think you have to go with Lima as the identifier.

my girlfriend, and her twin sister, both 2000 graduates of Lima Shawnee, refer to their school as "Lima Shawnee." also bear in mind that 85% of Ohioans have never heard of Lima Shawnee.h2oville rocket wrote:Find anybody from Shawnee that accepts Lima as part of the school's name and I may concede....
The Ohio High School Athletic Association often times uses a larger city name to reference the teams.
My arch-rival school in high school was Howland High School, in Howland Township, Ohio (near Warren). They were always Warren Howland whenever they were listed outside of the immediate area. Same thing with LaBrae High School, which is in Leavitsburg, Ohio. They often show up as Warren LaBrae.
Even as I've moved to NW Ohio, I see that Hicksville High School (yes there is such a place) is listed as Defiance Hicksville, even though Hicksville has its own zip code and is 15 miles away from Defiance.
So, to call Shawnee "Lima Shawnee" is not disrespectful. It's simply a point of reference for people as to where the school is.
