Coaches Poll

The USA Today had every coaches final football poll listed in this morning's edition. It was interesting to see how the coaches voted and how it affected the final rankings of some teams (i.e. Charlie Weis voting ND third while Steve Spurrier had them 14th or something).

I also notiched that only about half of the coaches in the MAC have a vote in the Coaches Poll. I think it was Brandon, Solich, Kelly, Hoke, Novak and I may be missing one or two. I found it interesting and surprising that Tom Amstutz does not have a vote. Does anyone know how the coaches are selected to vote? Can they decline the chance to vote? I was just curious. I thought that all MAC coaches had a vote, but I was obviously wrong. Incidentally, I think the Troy State coach was responsible for the one vote UT received in the final poll.

ND at 3rd? I guess Charlie forgot his team lost to Michigan State.

I thought the same thing and I can't wait for Ohio State to beat them by 3 touchdowns!

You could actually see how Brandon voted...he did not put UT in the Top 25, as noted above.

I expected Brandon's top 5 to be:

1) Boise State
2) Western Michigan
3) Wisconsin
4) Akron
5) Toledo

That way he could claim that we went 6-5 while playing the best 5 teams in the country, yet everyone is upset. :P

Not sure how they go about picking coaches for the poll, but Amstutz was one of the MAC coaches that voted in the poll a couple of years ago.

The USA TODAY Board of Coaches is made up of 62 head coaches at Division I-A institutions. They are from each of five geographical regions: Atlantic, South, Midwest, Southwest and West, and represent all 11 conferences and the independents. The poll is conducted with the cooperation of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). If you are a head coach at a D-1A school, you are eligible to be placed on the board. I believe the USA Today coaches voting board is in a constant state of change. Also of note, Joe Novak is on the Board of Trustees with the AFCA.

Gregg Brandon's votes this year were as follows:
1. USC
2. Texas
3. Penn State
4. Ohio State
5. Notre Dame
6. Oregon
7. Auburn
8. Miami (Fla)
9. West virginia
10. Georgia
11. LSU
12. Alabama
13. Virginia Tech
14. TCU
15. Texas Tech
16. Louisville
17. Florida
18. UCLA
19. Boston College
20. Wisconsin
21. Michigan
22. Clemson
23. Ga. Tech
24. Iowa
25. Florda State
