ESPN's MAC Awards, BG named MAC's biggest disappointment

Post by BGSU33 »

Mid-American Conference
MVP: Western Michigan WR Greg Jennings
Jennings starred for a revived Broncos team, tallying 1,259 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns. He led the nation in receptions with 98 and ranked second nationally in both receiving yards average (114.5 ypg) and receiving touchdowns. The senior eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards for the third consecutive season. Toledo QB Bruce Gradkowski, Central Michigan DE Dan Bazuin and Northern Illinois RB Garrett Wolfe (nation-leading 175.6 rushing average) also get mentions.

Coach of the Year: Western Michigan's Bill Cubit and Akron's J.D. Brookhart
This is simply too close to call. Cubit is the popular choice, having taken Western Michigan from 1-10 and winless in league play last season to a 7-4 mark in 2005. The Broncos had a chance to win the West Division but lost their final game at NIU. Brookhart, the 2004 MAC Coach of the Year, led Akron to a season of firsts (division title, league title, bowl game) in 2005. His offense continued to flow despite Charlie Frye's graduation, and Akron's defense allowed 100 fewer yards per game than it did last season.

Newcomer of the Year: Akron QB Luke Getsy
A transfer from Pitt who followed coach J.D. Brookhart to Akron, Getsy stepped in for Charlie Frye and led the Zips to their first-ever bowl game. He threw for exactly 3,000 yards and 19 touchdowns and had a superhuman performance in the MAC championship game (413 passing yards against NIU). Central Michigan freshman RB Ontario Sneed also gets a mention.

Biggest Surprise: Akron
Akron was picked to finish fourth in the MAC East before the season. But the Zips bypassed Bowling Green and Miami (Ohio) and stunned NIU in the league title game to earn a trip to the Motor City Bowl. The Zips' defense was the second most-improved unit nationally -- it went from 98th in yards allowed last year to 23rd this season. Akron was only the fourth team this season to have a 3,000-yard passer, a 1,000-yard rusher and a 1,000-yard receiver. Western Michigan and Central Michigan were also big surprises.

Biggest Disappointment: Bowling Green
Led by dominant QB Omar Jacobs, the Falcons were picked to win the league before the season. But losses in three of the final five games left Bowling Green out of the bowl picture for the first time since 2002. Buffalo is an annual disappointment, and Kent State was the only MAC team not to win a league game.

ESPN does suck(TO, Barry Bonds, Yankess, Red Sox, blah, blah), but they are dead on about the MAC and BG.

The disappointment is that whoever wrote this probably didn't even watch a MAC game all year and compiled the "awards" after a 5 minute glance at the conference statistics.

Their opinion is truly meaningless.

Joe:

Have to disagree. If all he did was look over a few stat sheets, he was pretty accurate.

BG was the biggest disappointment in the league, maybe all off college football.

How anyone could argue against BG being the biggest disappointment in the MAC is beyond me. We underperformed expectaions by 3-4 games, and I don't think the expectations were unreasonable.

For the record, I'm not arguing that we had a disappointing season, I'm just stating that I wish ESPN would rot a horrible death in a federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison.

Though also for the record, as far as this site's concerned, the disappointednessity of the last season has been hashed and rehashed, then hashed again so many times, I don't think it even qualifies as hash anymore.

Like some of you said, I don't think anything ESPN posted was not accurate. I think all of the points they touched on were pretty much right on. What was so wrong about saying BG was the MAC's biggest disappoinment? We were! What was so wrong with Akron being the biggest surprise? They were! What was so wrong with the COTY & MVP choices? These would be a lot of people's choices. I'm not sure I understand what all there is to badmouth these selections. :?:

It isn't that at all, 33. As I've said in a few other threads, we all realize how dissapointing this past season was - probably a little too much. I don't think anyone here is saying that it wasn't. What I think people are trying to indicate is that they are just sick and tired of hearing about it. I'm not saying that you shouldn't have posted this link by any means, but I wouldn't be too suprised at some eye-rolling and sarcasm if I were you. I think there are a lot of people around here (myself included) who just want to move on and look forward. Not forget last season - just move on.

I'm sure I'll get accused of telling people "how to be a fan" (not by you '33) because I am always being accused of doing that. Quite frankly, some of you need some lessons, though I rarely try to give them. In this case, however, I'm just trying to articulate what people are thinking.

This past season was painful enough while it was unfolding. We don't need to spend the entire offseason dripping sulfuric acid into the wound...

Nah, I just said ESPN was a disappointment.

the OSU board says ESPN's a disappointment because they do anything and everything in their power to make OSU look bad. (You know, like filtering moles in as boosters and running Central Ohio car dealerships and such.... )

Yes, it's a very well known fact that ESPN has it in for the Browns & the Buckeyes.

Actually, after the last six years, and many parts of the last 31 years, I'm starting to become convinced that the Browns have it in for themselves. :?
