Cole had a free agent workout with the Packers recently. I have been unable to find anymore information on what the Pack thought of him or what his chances of being offered a contract are, but I thought I'd pass on this small little nugget nonetheless. Anyone hear anything thing about Cole?

Thanks for the info and best wishes to him. I'm a Bears fan, so I would rather him suit up in another uniform other than Green Bay. But if he ever makes the team, I could live with him having a good game and the Packers still losing. Seriously though, I hope he can land somewhere.

The Packers signed Jimmy Dixon and Tim McGill to their practice squad yasterday. These were two guys that worked out with Cole. Looks like he is still unemployed.

The Packers have been working out various players at various positions all year without signing them. Getting a workout with the Packers is no more a guarantee than buying a lottery ticket. They've been looking at every warm body possible with all their injuries.

I really thought Cole would latch on this year. Everything really seemed to break well for him in Atlanta.

I would think someone would grab him just for his versatility. In a pinch he could even play some point guard for your charity basketball team after the season. It just seems you could open up some roster spots by having a guy like Magner who could be a backup at two or three positions. At least he's still getting some looks.

That's why I thought the Falcons were a good match. They need guys on offense who can fill multiple roles. Guess there's a reason NFL teams aren't asking me to be their GM.

I had heard coming out of camp that he was gonna catch on and Michael Vick liked him, but they cut him anyway.

Cole's problem is position & potential. Right now he'd be a solid WR and could step into almost any team and contribute.

Unfortunately WR is a position of athleticism & potential. Teams don't want their #4 or #5 WR (which is where Cole's talent would place him) to be somebody that is not an athletic freak. They want that guy at the bottom of the depth chart to be really tall, or really fast, or a really high jumper, etc. In short, they want somebody who can contribute a little now, but has potential to be a star in the future.

Most of the time they never become that star, but they're holding out hope they can become that guy.

Cole is never going to be the biggest WR. He's never going to be the fastest. He's never going to be the most athletic. He is, however, solid. He runs good routes, and catches that which hits him in the hands.

Unfortunately the market for that sort of guy isn't really that great. If he were 6'5 he would've been drafted. But at his size NFL teams want a potential gamechanger, and Cole isn't that. He might catch on somewhere, because IMO he'd contribute more than most of these projects ever will. Unfortunately, I'm not an NFL GM.

Cole's agent needs to research how Tom Waddle and Brian Brennan caught on. In my mind Cole is cut from the same slow, lanky, possession, pale, receiver cloth.

I keep thinking of the Eagles and how they always seem to have a guy like Reno Mahe hanging around on the roster. I don't get why a team with a similar personnel strategy wouldn't plug Cole into that slot.

Same here man. There is a spot for a Cole Magner on my team. I'm big on heart & hard workers. If I were a GM I'd probably end up with the least athletic team in the league, because I'll always defer to the guy with heart & intangibles over the combine freak any day.

At WR, I love the tall & speedy guys as much as anyone, but I put a HUGE emphasis on college production when I grade draft prospects. If they dominated college they're good football players. If they were always the talented freak but didn't even dominate in college I want nothing to do with 'em.

Example from top 10 of last year's draft? Troy Williamson. I don't even consider that guy for a top 50 pick, let alone top 10. He was the most physically gifted player on every team he ever played for. He started for 3 seasons and finished with a whopping 1700 yards receiving. Yup, he's fast as lightning when running on the track. On a football field he runs sloppy routes, doesn't give full effort, and has poor hands. No thanks. Given the choice straight up I'd take Cole over him.

It's really not as simple as simple as "4th and 5th WRs looks like this". Everyone's 4th and 5th WRs don't look the same. It all comes to donw to opportunity and fit. One team's garbage is another's jewels. Brandon Stokley looked average at best in Baltimore, but in Indianapolis became a fantasy receiver. It takes a team seeing enough of him to give him a chance and him taking advantage of the opportunity. But guys like Magner don't usually get that many opportunities.
