POSTGAME QUOTES -
NORTHERN ILLINOIS 34, BOWLING GREEN STATE 17

Bowling Green State University head coach Gregg Brandon:
"We didn't do it. We were dominated in every phase of the game. That was a good old fashioned butt-kicking. Coach Novak and his team took it to us. We have some work to do. That's evident."

"We have to overcome that stuff. We have a veteran team and that's my job to find out why. Our veteran players didn't play very well. Too many mistakes, too many missed tackles."

On third quarter drive drive that stalled and resulted in a FG:
"At that time, it could have made a difference (not scoring a touchdown). In hindsight, we didn't get in sync. Maybe we're (coaches) putting too much on Omar (Jacobs)."

On the Northern Illinois rushing attack:
"I thought we'd do a better job. Shoot, that number one (Garrett Wolfe) is a little scat back. I'll give him his props. We didn't tackle. When you don't tackle a quality back like that, you're going to have problems."

"We just didn't respond at the start of the second half, and then it snowballed on us. We need to be a disciplined football team."

BGSU quarterback Omar Jacobs:
"We were our own worst enemy. We got in the red zone and we killed ourselves tonight."

On third quarter drive drive that stalled and resulted in a FG:
"It was devastating. To be down there and have a good drive and get backed up twice, it took some wind out of our sails."

Bowling Green State linebacker Jovon Burkes:
"He's (Wolfe) a great back. He's small and he stayed low to the ground. Losing, period, hurts. Losing in the MAC hurts."

Here is a link to the NIU ones as well if anyone wants to read them. http://www3.niu.edu/athletics/football/ ... Quotes.htm

I think our defense helped with that a little bit. :? After his first TD run, I turned to the g/f and said "this little $@#!&-er is going to make a name for himself tonight". I was hoping I'd be wrong.

Though she might have had the line of the night, after they talked about him being ineligible for last year because of academics, he had a long run and she said "he's gotta get them all in before mid-terms".

And what was with the DB (or was it LB) that works as a campus DJ and gets paid for it? They said it was minimum wage (in comparison to the $25/hr janitorial jobs in Huntington), but isn't there still rules about athletes making ANY kind of money?

Any athlete can get a job. Obviously, football is such a commitment that it can be tough to find the time. But the NCAA has no rule against kids getting jobs.

The issues in Huntington: These were very lucrative jobs, well beyond what any other janitor in the community was making, supplied by a wealthy booster. Also, there was often little evidence that work was being done.

Remember a few years ago when that rule changed. . .Ten years ago players could not hold jobs at all during the school year.

If you have been around for a while you may recall a few BGSU players were working as bouncers at a bar downtown and they kicked the crap out of some kid. . . .

The jobs are ok as long as the pay is comperable to what other make. . . no $50 an hour computer lab attendents.

that's what I thought, and $5.25 an hour or whatever is no big thing, I'm glad there is leeway (sp?) like that so kids CAN get a job. Though with that rule in place, and even knowing the commitment football takes, it shows that if you're creative about where to find work, it can be done. It seems the biggest argument people make for "stipends" for athletes is "these kids can't even get a job so they can buy a pizza or go out and have a drink with some friends." you don't need a job that pays $12 an hour, or works ya 40 hours a week. If its too much commitment to find a job, it should be too much of a commitment to go out running around the town, right?
