Nice fight from Akron

Post by BGSU33 »

As the Zips have done all season long, they fought hard and didn't give up. Had they recovered that second on-side kick (which they almost did), I think they could have pulled it out someway, somehow. As much as it was nice to see teams like Akron, WMU and CMU show much improvement, it only goes to show how winning the MAC will be tougher than ever next season. The so-called "Big Four" of Toledo, Miami, NIU and BG now have company at the top and if we thought competing for a MAC title this year was tough, just wait until next season. I see NIU as the team to beat next year, but as we BG fans know all to well, it's what you do on the field and not where you are predicted that matters. No way would I have expected Akron to be MAC Champions this season, but they were. But as for the MAC, both Akron and Toledo competed well in their bowl games and I'm proud from a conference standpoint. Congratulations to both of those teams for very good seasons.

I don't really see the addition of teams to our "Big Four" as a bad thing. As long as the standard of overall quality doesn't falter, it means the MAC is getting better and those "bottom tier" teams we have aren't so much of an issue. Our wins are bigger and better if we beat Akron 2005, rather than Akron 2003.

made the trip up for the game today and was impressed with the large and enthusiastic following from Akron. Paid attendance was 50616 which is comparable to the what BG and Toledo drew in their recent trips to the MCB.

If the refs didn't have their heads up their arses and not called offshides on the final drive, Akron might have tied it up.

Akron got kinda screwed on calls, but a good team doesn't get itself into those positions!

And I seem to recall Miami setting a record against them... 3 TD's in 55 seconds, enroute to a 51-23 rout. (don't say anything about safeties.)

What does that have to do with anything? This is about the Akron/Memphis game.

I thought they did well. They certainly don't give up. I think they will be a MAC force and I think Brookhart can coach. They really improved from the start of the season.

One thing on our midseason frustration--with Akron and WMU, we played two teams about to really show improvement. Its hard to believe that Akron team lost 20-0 to Army at home.

Well to Bando(OH)'s point, I thought about the Miami/Akron game when Memphis dumped the water bucket with 1:55 and Akron facing 3and 10 down 21 pts. I told my wife, I thought Memphis was a bit hasty in that, Miami scored 21pts in under a minute, Akron has almost 2. Then they ran that nice play for a TD, recovered the on side kick and got the next TD. I kept thinking of UK drenching Guy Morris and then watching LSU score a TD to win the game.

I though Akron played well, shame they didn't win for the MAC.

I was a bit disappointed in Akron's offensive strategy, especially when Memphis blitzed. Akron did score one long touchdown in the 2nd half by throwing a short pass over a Memphis blitz. Overall, though, I felt they used this strategy not nearly enough. Color analyst Spielman commented on how predicatble Memphis was with 3rd down blitzes.

Remember how last year BG killed Memphis when they blitzed?
