Fostoria's Hyde to sign with Michigan St.

FOSTORIA -- Marcus Hyde falls into the select group of athletes who rank among the finest Tom Grine has coached in nearly two decades at Fostoria High School.
Now Hyde, who played quarterback and defensive back at FHS, will have a chance to show many more people what he can do after giving a verbal commitment this past weekend to continue his football career at Michigan State.
"Athletically, he's as gifted as anyone I've coached, and that includes some pretty good ones," Grine said this morning, rattling off the names of such past FHS standouts as Damon Moore, Richard Newsome and Casey McBeth.
"He's very competitive as well, and that's the whole idea right there. He wanted to play at that level and show what he can do in front of 75,000 people and a television audience."
Hyde, a senior, is not bound to Michigan State by his verbal commitment. That will come when he signs a National Letter of Intent next month.
Hyde also received scholarship offers from five Mid-American Conference schools, with Bowling Green, Akron and Eastern Michigan giving the strongest pursuit.
The 6-foot, 190-pound Hyde, who has been clocked at 4.4 seconds in the 40-yard dash, was mostly recruited as a defensive back, though Grine said Eastern Michigan and Michigan State sought him as "an athlete."
"He might play defensive back, he might play receiver, he might possibly even play quarterback," Grine said.
Though he's least likely to play quarterback in college, that's where Hyde put up numbers this past season that enabled him to be honored as the Northwest District's Division II co-player of the year and as a first-team All-Ohio selection.
Though missing two games -- both of which the 6-4 Redmen lost -- Hyde completed 83 of 135 passes for 1,078 yards with 13 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also rushed for 915 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Hyde, who was unavailable for comment, is heading to a team that is traditionally much better than this past season's record of 5-6 overall and 2-6 in the Big Ten.
