Kiper's Ranking for Omar

Mel Kiper has Omar ranked as his fifth rated JUNIOR QB, unless he has a great combine, that does not come close to a second round pick .... you have to be an ESPN Insider to use the link

His top 5...

1. Vince Young, Texas
2. Brady Quinn, Notre Dame
3. Drew Stanton, Michigan State
4. Troy Smith, Ohio State
5. Omar Jacobs, Bowling Green
5a. Marcus Vick, Virginia Tech

All I have to say is WTF? Troy Smith at #4? His ratings just lost all respectable meaning, IMO.

He could still be a second round pick because there just is not that many good quarterbacks coming out in this draft. Who cares about the list of Junior Quarterbacks, Quinn, Stanton, and Smith are not coming out this year and Vick might be in prison come draft time. I would be more interested in Kiper's list of top Available Quarterbacks and I have a feeling it looks something like this:
1. Matt Leinart
2. Vince Young
3. Jay Cutler
4. Omar Jacobs

It does. Of course the list doesn't mean much until the combine, wonderlic, and interviews have passed. We'll see how Omar and the rest hold up to the intense scrutiny of the evaluation process.

I agree with gobghoops. If those guys aren't coming out this year, why should Kiper concern himself with them at this point? Also, regardless if Smith were to go and would be drafted ahead of Omar, I think he's wrong and Omar is the better pro prospect and will have the better career. I think that if someone gets him in the fourth round or below, they are getting a steal and will realize it probably two years down the road.

I'm on the record as an OSU hater.

But there's those orange-colored glasses again.

While Omar may be the more physical specimen, Smith showed in the Fiesta Bowl he is certainly an NFL prospect, and the timing of that game/these rankings no doubt had an impact on Smith ahead of Omar.

But really, what did Jacobs do to warrant being ahead of Smith right now? Play huge in a big game? Besides Wisconsin, no.

Smith is absolutely a pro prospect, and right now, a more polished quarterback than Jacobs.

Troy Smith had two huge games to end his season against top talent. Jacobs had an injury plagued season and maybe didnt play as good of a game gianst mediocre talent as Troy did in those last two games.

Omar went up against a top Big 10 defense in Wisconsin and threw for 458 yards and 5 TD passes. OSU skipped Wisky this year so that would have been the only game to compare him directly to Smith.

There are no orange-colored glasses here. I don't care what tOSU as a team has done, but Troy Smith has done nothing to impress me. You can bring up the 2 last games, but I don't look at the Fiesta Bowl even counting. That's one more game than Omar played in. I'm sure someone will say something about how that shows who's a better quarterback because we didn't even get a bowl. But lets be honest, Troy Smith didn't get tOSU to that bowl game, their defense did.

About the big games, we railed Miami. Toledo was a battle that could have gone either way between evenly matched teams. Boise...were you there? No. I don't know anyone that could have an amazing game on that field. You can barely see their players in coverage from the stands. I can't imagine trying to read that on the field. Our defense really didn't do anything to help the offense that game either.

Troy Smith will be as successful as you would be if you joined the NFL JHam. Sorry, no orange colored glasses here, just me giving my opinion. If the orange colored glasses were on, I'd be complaining that he wasn't ahead of Vince Young or not going #1 in the draft.

As an OSU & BG fan, I gotta say that I am still not convinced of Smith's viability for the NFL. He's gotta prove that he can be a leader on & off the field and be able to actually play a full season before he gets my endorsement. He is a playmaker, no doubt, and he's got all the physical tools, but he's very inconsistent. He'll throw 5 perfect passes in a row followed by 2 or 3 that just make you scratch your head.

He has played very well towards the end of each of the last 2 years, but I'd like to see him put a full season of work together. If he does he could be a better prospect than Omar, but if both were in this year's draft I don't think I'd put Smith ahead of Omar. I cannot guarantee that the NFL scouts wouldn't however. Playing for OSU, against Big10 competition, means a lot to a lot of people. Even with his inconsistencies, Smith did prove to be a pretty efficient passer this season. His height will always be a question. He's listed at 6'1, but you know how those listings are. If he checks in at a fraction of an inch below that it will be a major knock, because he's not the athlete that Vick is.

I could see both guys being successful on the next level, but Omar's shown a lot more consistency over the past 2 years. It should also be noted that UM & ND both have TERRIBLE defenses this year. Smith ripped 'em up, no doubt, but its not like he was putting numbers up on the '85 Bears out there.

Smith is a very good college QB that will not make an impact in the NFL.

I'm not sure yet what Omar will be in the league or where he will be drafted. It depends a lot on what he shows mentally in the next few months.

I can't see him lasting past the 4th round though. Omar has the physical potential to be a franchise player regardless of other things. Even if he does poorly on the wonderlic or in interviews, some team will fall in love with his size and his arm and take a flier on him in the third or fourth round, thinking they can develop the other aspects of his game. Of course he may impress everyone on those mental tests and jump into the top half of the first round also. I am very interested to see which way it goes.

Fourth round at the absolute latest IMO.

This baffles me. Since Omar didn't play in a bowl game we can't evaluate Smith's ability based, at least in part, on his bowl performance?

You obviously have not seen troy smith play very often. He is the reason OSU beat your Wolverines. He is the reason they will beat them next year, He just may be the reason they win a national title next year. I dont see who will challenge them now that UT lost Young and USC is gonna lose leinart, white and bush. Florida and ND may be the next best teams next year. I'm sure i am overlooking someone or there is a team i can not think about next year but really no one comes to mind at the moment

And OSU has lost just about everyone from that D. If Texas and USC are gonna slip because they lose a top player or two, how do you expect OSU to be as good next year? Can't have it both ways.

The Bucks will be good cuz Tressel is a fine coach...but national title? I don't think so.
