Weekend Observations

Just a couple of random thoughts on the weekend that was:

 Yes, the defensive line is a concern, but more because they didn't put any pressure on the QB in passing situations. The problems stopping the run I put mainly on our linebackers. The D-line is suppose to take on their blocks and create lanes for the linebackers to make the tackle. If a D-lineman makes a tackle against the run its an added bonus. Graanted your line isn't doing its job if it gets blwon five yards off the line of scrimmage. Why can't we recruit linebackers that are 6'2", 225 lbs and run a sub 4.7 40-yard dash?

 Defensive backs? I am not completely sure how good they are against the pass? NI wasn't in enough passing situations to get a good read on their performance. However, that pass in the right flat to the tight end or their receiver killed us. You would have thought that we would have quessed right at least once on that play and jumped a route?

 Coaching? Our inability to make adjustments at half-time scares the hell out of me. Maybe we made the adjustmenst but we just don't have the athletes to compete on the defensive side of the ball?

 Home field is such a big advantage in conference games. The last three years the BG/NIU games have been decided by more than two touchdowns with the home teams will all three. These teams have all been close in terms of talent levels. The big crowdds and national TV expossure has added to this home field advantage. Home field advantage bodes well for us versus Marshall, but we have to find a way to break the hex at UT.

 Omar is the real deal! We should be able to reload him with weapons the next two years and be in contention for the conference championship each yar. Finding some studs on defense would put us over the top.

Lets win out and see how the chips fall!

:!:  AMEN TO THAT!

After they completed that pass for the billionth time, my head about exploded! Just once I wanted to see a DB make a play on the ball!

Another of my concerns is our inability to even hit 10-15 yard passes down the field. We haven't hit on any real home run balls that I can think of so far and the number of medium-range passes seems low also. It seems like we get Steve Sanders the ball in this range, but no one else, especially Cole or Chuck. Cole is averaging something like 7 yards a catch so far. I'd like to see us use his hands down the field more and not as simply a Wayne Chrebet-type receiver who catches all the underneath stuff.

I agree we never throw the ball down field. It's either a run by pope or a five yard pass. My little brother caught on to our offense and he's 8-years-old.

I don't think our offensive strategy is a problem. It's the same thing we have done for the last couple of years. We spread the defense out. We throw the short, intermediate stuff and run out of the shotgun. We take a shot on a deep ball now and then to keep the defense honest and try and hit a homerun. We move the chains with first downs and keep our defense, and their ofense, off the field.

I saw Omar throw deep on several occasions the other night. Unfortunately we didn't hit a big one. But he did throw a couple of nice balls on the square-in route about 20 yards down the middle of the field.

Lets not worry about the offense as much at this point. Lets try to figure out what the hell we are doing (or not doing) on defense!

We need to fix both sides of the ball...

The offense is struggling with point production and the defense is struggling on the run. Both of these things need to be fixed.

The Defense

We could start by maybaye putting Brad Willams where he belongs, at middle linbacker and Leinager back at DT where he belongs. Williams is at best maybay a DE , not a an interior lineman. The coaches need to figure this out once and for all!

It's now to the point of being pathetic.

Write this down three times: L E I N I N G E R
That should work.

When you get up into high school and then into the working world, it will be very important to spell names correctly. And if you ever run into Mr. Leininger, don't tell him your handle.

Work on the little things, it is worth it.

thank you
