Gotta feel sorry for Temple.

I was looking through the draft tracker on ESPN, and I couldn't help but notice the staggering amount of players that Temple is losing.

http://insider.espn.go.com/nfldraft/dra ... ear%3D2006

As if Temple didn't have enough problems. They are the Bastard Child of the Big East Conference, halfway in and halfway out of the MAC, changing their coach, and losing half their players.

It would be nice if our new addition to the conference would actually win some games every now and then. As if our conference wasn't viewed as weak enough, we are accepting one of the weakest teams in D-I.

Don't write off the Owls just yet. They haven't been able to recruit squat the last few years because ...

A) They were a team without a conference - getting kicked out of the Big East and without the knowledge that they'd be in the MAC.

B) They were losing an awful lot of games.

C) Bobby Wallace wasn't experienced in recruiting at the D-IA level.

The result was a lot of JUCOs and lot of kids who otherwise wouldn't be playing D-IA ball.

They have great facilities and have the stability of the MAC on their side. Golden has good experience recruiting at this level and has already done pretty well, all things considered.

Losing a lot of guys is probably a good thing, a purge of sorts. Temple will not go 0 fer 2006; I'd put money on that .

Alot of those kids are also JUCO transfers... two years ago Wallace recruited 34 new players... 32 were Jucos.

Temple does loss numerous seniors from the 2005 squad. The ESPN information is based upon a 2005 spring practice roster and not the 2005 fall roster.

Regardless of which roster is used Temple clearly needs players.

The O & D lines starters are almost all gone. Temple doesn't have an experienced QB returning next season.

Temple's problems were compounded by our president, David Adamany. He came on board +/- 5 years ago & had a very anti football attitude. Many "insiders" hold him responsible for our removal from the BE.

Temple was a much better program than Rutgers at that time (2001) & things only continued to go down hill after the 2001 BE termination. Temple did beat Rutgers four consecutive years during this (1999-2002)

Adamany announced his retirement last week effective June, 2006. He formerly was the president of Wayne State in Detriot prior to coming to Temple. He also attempted to drop football @ Wayne State.

I am not going to go into all the details but Adamany's departure should help Temple football.

The problems caused by both internal & external factors lead to JUCO recruiting.

The 2005 schedule was put together to replace BE television money.

The comments are incorrect about Bobby Wallace. Bobby coached for Pat Dye @ ECU, Wyoming & Auburn.

Bobby recruited Bo Jackson to Auburn. He knows his way around D1 football.

Al Golden is putting together a pretty good recruiting class. I wouldn't be surprised if many end up starters next season.

Our 2006 season is not as brutal as 2005 but we do play Penn State, Clemson, Minnesota, Louisville & Navy next season plus six MAC games.
The sole remaning game will probably be a 1AA team.

2007 schedule includes Penn State, Kentucky, Clemson, Navy & Vandy.

Assuming recruiting goes as well as anticipated
a realistic forecast would be 3-4 wins in 2006 & 5-6 wins in 2007.

According to the MAC boards a few Temple fans are claiming to rule the MAC kind of like UCF...

Tricky: I think those folks are the vocal minority. Most followers of Temple football have a clear grasp on reality. When some say they'll be taking a MAC bowl bid by 2007, I think that's more hopeful enthusiasm, rather than total UCF-like arrogance.

The Owls should fly away and land in DII where they could rebuild, gain some experience in a divison where they could be competitive.
The MAC should NOT have opened its arms to this school, a school which has been shuned for good reason, they dont win games, and have a solid track record of being loosers.
Yes maybe the mac will aford them the chance to stay in D1 and rebuild and even some games and maybe, just maybe in 8 years break 500.
this was a mistake where football is concerned, it has effectivel further weakend the MAC esp when BCS electoral championship points are earned. The MAC commish has made his big mistake and greatly detrimented MAC football, even with all the good he has done...
what is the rule...1000 at-a-boys get negated by one aw-s**t. That is what this is, was, will be.

IMO, you're underestimating the potential of Temple football. The prediction of 3 wins this year and maybe 5 next is probably pretty close in the MAC. If they get a good staff in place, which it seems they have, they could easily be top 5 in the MAC in 4-5 years....not to mention the gigundous market they give the MAC access to, along with a highway in to the NJ and PA talent gold mines, along with the Temple basketball program being associated with the MAC.

I wasn't a big fan of the addition, but there are a lot of positives. How is a 3-5 win Temple team greatly detrimenting the MAC when we already have about 4 of those in? Plus I would say Temple has much greater potential than a few other perennial doormats. Temple football, as it stands right now, does nothing for the MAC. Ask that question again in 5 years, and I think you might be surprised what the answer is IMO.

I thought that it was first Football this season, and then full sports admission the following year. I wouldn't mind Temple Basketball...Oh wait a minute...We can't win with the current conference teams... :?

Wait a minute - what is all of this business about Temple b-ball in the MAC? I thought this was a football-only deal, aka why this was the worst idea since the City of Phoenix?

I am very confused...

My problem with the deal is that it is football only. If they were bringing everything I would open my arms. When they bring only football it tells me they are just looking to fall into the best place and will move on at a moments notice.

They had to bring someone in since the divisions are evening up soon.

Yeah but why do we have to bring anybody? What is wrong with 12 teams? I just don't get that.
Also it will be even for football and odd for everything else. Once again I don't get it.

I know there was some talk on here a year or so ago about a possible team to bring in as an all sports member. Has there been any recent mentions anywhere on this? I remember there were a couple of schools mentioned, namely MTSU and Western Kentucky?? Also I think we should reserve judgment on the Temple decision for a few years until we see them progress. There is nothing worse than having the arrogance that we are above other programs and that there is never going to be anyway that they will compete with us. If you need examples of this just look at Marshall or the Big Ten (for the most part) and how much we hate the way they look at us.

I'm a proponent to helping out a guy that's down but adding Temple to the MAC just makes matters worse for us as a whole and individually. The crap that the BCS and school Presidents pound on conferences and schools that are not apart of the elite 6 conferences puts us in a debt every season. Of the measly $1.7Mil we get to share with the other six confernces, one more loser team to divide the funds with just puts us further into debt.

We should have just ignored the situation and let the fend for themselves. The only reason we are weaker is because of the big conferences hogging all the available resources. We can't recruit the talent necessary to compete on the elite level.

Temple will actually help make recruiting harder for the MAC as a whole.

I apologize for going way off into left field but it just angers me that we're not allowed to compete for the top prize in the country even though the NCAA doesn't even recognize a National Championship for college football.
