Mick McCabe's Michigan Fab 50

Mick's been covering HS sports in Michigan for the Detroit Free Press since I was in high school. Here's his list of the top 50 in Michigan. We have three guys on here with another possible recruit listed.

Toledo has really backed out of Michigan in the past two years. Slappys like Rocketfootball will tell you it's because the talent in Michigan is down.
But, they offered a number of guys on this list that they didn't get....

Why even put a shot at Toledo and then me? Please tell me everyone on that list that Toledo offered and did not get? Toledo isn't the only school being very choosy about Michigan. Even though BG has some recruits from there, you guys haven't been pushing the state as hard the last couple of years either. Look at all the EMU players on that list. 12 EMU kids on the Fab 50. Do you really want to compete with EMU for recruits? Michigan has been down the last few years and many people have been saying it....not just Toledo fans either.

32 of the Michigan Fab 50 are going to a MAC school and another one is going to Grand Valley State. Only 15 players on that list are going to BCS schools, and 3 of those are going to Cincinnati.

Toledo did get a commit from LB Derrick Summers from Southfield, MI though. His brother redshirted as a QB at Toledo last year. Derrick reportedly had offers from Toledo, Michigan State, and Wisconsin. I think his brother Brandon was the only reason we got him. Of course Brandon chose Toledo over Indiana and Michigan State when he signed with us last year.

The #3 player, Obi Ezeh, is not committed to C Michigan. He's going to Michigan, for those worried that Central got the #3 player in the state.

A little touchy aren't we RF?

I think when you spend as much time on a visiting board and as many responses as you have , you have to EXPECT a shot or two!!

Grow some thicker skin, slappy... Off the top of my head, I believe you boys offered Maddux and Canfield. I'd do some research to find more, but frankly I don't care too.

I don't really spend that much time on here, and I certainly haven't been taking shot on BG here. I guess some people just don't know how to act with class.

Newsflash - Bowling Green fans don't like Toledo. Bowling Green fans don't like Toledo fans. Bowling Green fans don't like Toledo fans who post messages on a Bowling Green internet message board.

Is that really so hard to understand?

There have been some subtle and underhanded shots at BG by you around here (granted, you are probably the most likeable Toledo poster). But the shots at BG flow much more freely on the rent-a-board. The holier-than-thou angle doesn't really fly.

As for how much time you spend around here, that's your business, and you can spend your time however you want. But I don't think I could name another non-BG fan who spends more time here than you. So that argument doesn't really work either.

Please keep posting and spending time here -- I always love rival fans that can conduct themselves well. But you'd have to be incredbly naive to think that all BG fans are going to treat you perfectly all the time.

Well, I guess you are right. That is a number of guys.....that's 2.

Don't know about Maddux, but hey you can't win them all. Canfield was offered by Toledo, as was 6 other QB's across the nation. Two players dropped Toledo from their list early on.......Rick Stanzi (2 star recruit to Iowa) and Terry Mayo (5 star recruit to UCF). Toledo got the Opelt verbal and didn't have anymore scholarships open so they stopped recruiting QB's. They did tell one that they still wanted to offer him a greyshirt and that player still hasn't made up his mind. And no, he wasn't Canfield.

So while Canfield may have chose Central Michigan over Toledo anyway, he was told UT no longer had a scholarship available before he ever made a decision.

Nice job of trying to sping things though Flip.

This is what I don't understand about some of you BG fans. There are others BG fans here that hate Toledo and hate some of the UT fans, but respect UT and are friendly to some UT fans. It's the same the other way around too.

Then there are others that stereotype everyone and say they hate them even though that particular poster has never come on their board to put them down.

That's what is hard to understand. You let your hatred get in the way for some stupid reason. If someone feels that way they are either narrow-minded or just plain classless......maybe both.

You could take out BG and Toledo from that speech and insert any two rivals in any two sports and the conclusion would be the same. It says nothing about BG or Toledo. It's just the way it is.

You make some good points and some bad points.

First off, when I do come and post here there is also sometime when I have come here in several days. In fact, there have been times I thought to come here because I had an email about a PM that was sent to me here.

With the UT/BG rivalry you are going to see some shots at each other's school. The way I see it is that I have respect for BG and most of the fans so I won't take those shots on this board unless I am really provoked first. That is just a respect and class thing. That doesn't mean that I won't take shots at BG on the UT forum somewhere else though. And it also doesn't mean that I won't expect a BG fan to defend BG when they see those shots. But the BG fans that go to the UT forum and start the shots at UT don't have respect for UT and are not classy.

As for all BG fans treating me perfectly? I would never expect that. But if someone takes a shot at me or Toledo out of nowhere, and they are totally wrong with the shot..........I will reply back. I would not expect me to be included in this shot like it was by Flipper. I would not expect him to make a complete ridiculous claim either. If there was some validity to his shot at Toledo it would make more sense and I would expect it. However, you can't possibly tell me with a straight face that you believe Flipper that the recruiting in the state of Michigan is not down. Just read the facts I gave. How can any BG fan using reasonable logic not agree that the state of Michigan has been down?

Okay boys...you have to realize that RF is always correct in everything he says. He knows all...he is probably the closest to GOD in knowing everything.

That is why he knows exactly how much time the BG coaches spent recruiting Michigan talent the last couple of years.

His quote in an earlier post:
you guys haven't been pushing the state as hard the last couple of years either

And how exactly does he know this?

God only knows

To a certain extent. But I also know that there are a lot of UT and BG fans that have respect for the other school. Many of the longer time fans have this respect for the other school. When you look at other rivalries I don't see that same respect near as much. I think that is part of what makes this rivalry so great.

Think about it. Our schools are about 20 minutes apart and many UT and BG fans live and work in Toledo or the surrounding area. I know people that go to BG or are fans of BG and I am friends with them and get along with them just fine.

In 2004 when BG visited the Glass Bowl there was a couple from BG in front of us. I was nice to them and they were nice to us. BG was killing us 27-7 at halftime and we were talking friendly about stuff. We talked about Omar and how we both thought that 2005 would be his last year at BG and so forth. I never met this couple before the game. This was because of the respect we have for each school and that we were classy people. You don't see much of that happening in the OSU/UM rivalry or the Auburn/Alabama rivalry, and so on.

It's not that I do or don't agree with Flipper's argument about Michigan talent, it's that I disagreed with your statement.

You seem to think that there are more BG fans that are rude to Toledo fans than vice-versa. I think that's a biased view. I have no doubt that the ratio is about even. How many BG fans even post on the rent-a-boards. 5? 10? Sample size alone makes that argument moot. How many Rocket fans post here (not counting trolls). 5? No reasonabe conclusion about the two schools' fan bases' interactions can be made from these boards.
