Pretty cool idea for Doyt L. Perry for the football stadium

The other day I was talking to a friend of mine who is from the state of Washington, he went to the University of Washington. We were talking about different colleges, college basketball, college football, football stadiums, etc. Anyway, we were talking about some recent renovations and constructions of facilities at BG and UW and I was telling him about the ongoing construction of the SEBO. He asked me why the stadium was named Doyt L. Perry Stadium and I informed him why. He then asked if there was anything present and visible in or around the stadium that was dedicated to him. I said not that I was aware of, but that I thought I remembered seeing a plaque or something in one of the boxes or in the athletic hallway, but nothing else that I could remember, at least in or around the stadium. (Maybe there is, but nothing jumped out at me).

Anyway, like me, he also enjoys seeing other facilities across the country and he was telling me about a stadium he saw in Spokane, Washington that had something that could be a cool idea for BG to honor Doyt L. Perry in addition to the naming of the facility. He told me about a football stadium in Spokane called Joe Albi Stadium. Funny enough, the stadium was used in the mid-1980’s wrestling movie called Vision Quest. I know I am starting to date myself by referring to this movie, but for you movie buffs, the stadium is shown in the scene where the wrestler called Shute was carrying a log on his shoulders while walking up the stands. If you’ve seen the movie, you’ll remember the part. Anyway, inside this stadium, there is a bronzed statue of what he said was the man they named the stadium after sitting in one of the seats. I found a link with some photos of the stadium (the link is below) and you can scroll around and see this statue and other images of the stadium as well. I’ve also seen similar ideas at other schools like Notre Dame and Virginia around the stadium with bronzed statues, or even at Ohio U. they have a little monument area with a bronzed bobcat outside the stadium.

Obviously, something like this would cost money, but when I saw it I thought it would be very cool to have something like that of Doyt L. Perry, like having a statue of him standing in an endzone “coaching” while looking over the field, or have him sitting in a seat like the photos in this link. I just think it would be an awesome touch to do something like that for Doyt L. Perry or Harold Anderson. I know the facilities are named after them, but it would be cool to take it a step further with what we are doing at the stadium now. We've talked about hanging bowl banners, replacing the fence, adding more trees, etc. I just thought this was another idea to throw around……here’s the link to the photos:

I thought so too. The second I first saw that statue, I thought of how cool it would be to have one of Doyt L. Perry in our stadium. And if we put one like that in our stands, we could add one person to our attendance figures for every home game. Seriously though, it is pretty cool.

A friend and I (he used to post here a bit, actually) had discussed this idea months ago, and I actually have an idea in mind, but the sketching skills leave a whole lot to be desired. I think that it would be great (and I would think reasonable time-wise) to have something done for the 50th anniversary of the 1959 team, and make it a joint monument. I thought about the idea of a statue in the corner of the endzone, but I keep finding myself drawn to the idea of a fountain/reflecting pool. I don't know what the plans are for the south end of the stadium (scoreboard/non-Sebo end), but if it isn't "capped off" by a convocation center (which would be a hell of an idea in itself), why not make that end a main entrance point to the stadium with a monument in the middle?

The statue of Doyt could be replicated from a photo like the two full body ones here: http://www.bgsusports.com/mambo/index.p ... &Itemid=53 with some kind of stone monuments/tablets/whatever surrounding the pool with photos, scores/schedule from 1959, Doyt's record, remembrances from former players, and stuff like that surrounding it.

It seems like enough foot traffic makes it's way around that end, even though the students come into the west side and most of the tailgaters from the east.

However it's done I agree that a monument to DLP seems like a simple, yet necessary, icing on the cake after/while the Sebo Center is completed.

I think its a great idea. In fact if you honored all former coaches that way you might fool some of the people who feel compelled to start the "lousy attendance" threads. Maybe we could do that in the GB...

I like your line of thought, H2O.

How about when they redo the Doyt, take out all the chairbacks and replace them with seats that actually look like people. That'd fool 'em, I just knows it!

It would save a heck of a lot of bandwidth, that's for sure.

I have said it before and I will say it again - I will gladly make a $1,000 donation to something like this. This could be the Ay-Ziggy-Zoomba.com Challenge (similar to the Bill Lloyd Challenge for Falcon Club members for the Sebo Center).

Does anyone has any idea on the cost of a life size bronze sculpture? I would love to find out, because I think we can get it done too. My dad and Doyt were good friends and played todether at BG, so I am very interested in this project.

I've had this idea before and agree it would be a great addition to the stadium. In fact, I used to have two things in my signature "Doyt Perry Statue Fund" & "Bring Back the Victory Bell"

We got them to finally recognize Nate Thurmond with a banner, perhaps with some prodding this could be tackled as well. His unbelievable coaching record- winning % needs to be shared with the casual observer coming to the stadium./
