Wayne Simmonds

Post by Dublin Falcon »

Was drafted 6th round by Owen Sound in the OHL draft. I am trying to remember the last time a guy left BGSU to play Major Junior (I am NOT saying Simmonds is looking to do that!), and I'm thinking maybe DeVries or did Aaron Ellis also go? Any ideas?

Ellis and DeVries both did.

I saw that several days ago. According to Fogerty, he's still coming here. DeVries and Ellis weren't getting the playing time they wanted so it was a viable choice for them.

It's my understanding the Owen Sound often does this - drafts kids committed to US colleges. As I said before I wasn't saying anything either way but good for BG that he's still coming. It's amazing that DeVreis left for lack of PT and how many years now has he been in the NHL? Wow!

There may have been a falling out issue with the coach at the time DeVries left.

Wayne Simmonds decided to go the OHL route. The money convinced him. If his career doesn't pan out, his short sightedness may hurt him in the long run. It's hard to put a dollar value on a college degree when all else fails.

According to today's edition of Research on Ice:
While we're on the subject, the OHL, we were informed late last week, pulled another player away from D-I when Brockville Braves forward Wayne Simmonds, an '88 who'd committed to Bowling Green back in March, signed with Owen Sound for what we've been told may have been a financial package hovering near $50,000.

At 6-2 and 181 pounds, Simmonds, from Pickering, Ontario, scored 24 goals and 43 points in 49 games this year--third best among CJHL rookies. He was chosen in the sixth round by the Attack at the 2006 OHL draft.

I wish him luck, but think he might have been better off going the college route. Guess that just opens the door for someone else to become a Falcon!!

GO HOCKEY!!!
"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."
