Perfect Teammate

Post by ShaneFalco »

I think that I have come up with the solution to all of the problems this year......

It is time for the guys to make "Perfect Teammate" videos to share with each other. If this doesn't work, then it may be time to look into the window / mirror, and talk about what they see.....

Treat the team like pros

Post by Bison »

I think the one thing that coach should do is stop thinking about all those little things like being the perfect teamate and let the guy be themsleves. Make them feel comfortable and they will begin to play like they know how to play.
Over the pat 10 years BG has not recruited 8-12 place players, but they continue to finish at or near the bottom. Treat your players like pros. Ask them for advice. Ask them what they think about certian things. I understand that there needs to be an element of education but I think coach should losen his grip on the lives of the players and in doing so thats how the players will come together. There is no question that he is trying.
You are exactly right when you talk of how he treats his players. If you talk about team building and at the root of that being trust, well then trust your players. They will make mistakes and that is what they will learn from.

Thank you. With this comment you just proved that the attitude of the players is more of a problem than the coach himself.

Actually, it really does make you look like a child...making a joke out of something the coach had you do to try and improve yourselves as a TEAM. Instead of just making a joke out of it, why don't you point out why it didn't work? But, then again, I guess you already did. And in doing so, you showed why you failed to bring greatness to this program as a player. Had you actually taken the exercises seriously, you probably would have made the team better. But instead you joke about them and treat them as such. And you're trying to tell us that the coach is the problem???

So if at work you were required to do something of the same sort...you wouldn't be making a joke about it after the fact??

These guys are not 8 years old, heck most of them have been out on their own living away from their parents for years.

Depending on the job, I'd take it seriously. You occasionally have to TRUST those you work with.

I have done much sillier things than that for work. Have you ever been on a professional retreat? Those things are like ****ing pre-school without the multi-colored crayons.

If this is what you guys are basing your hatred of this coach on...boy...

you people need to chill out. That is one thing. It was dumb, it made us feel stupid, it made us feel like children. It is just an example of how the coach treats us like children instead of men. Don't try to analyze it, thats the bottom line. I would never ask my team of 20- 24year olds to do such kindergarden activities. Maybe if he treated the team like men they would play like men.

And maybe if the team focused on being a team and acting like one while doing WHATEVER is asked of them the win/loss record would be different. These childish exercises you refer to are being done by several successful companies to create a bond between their staffs. You may have heard of some of these companies, they include microsoft, google, chase, sears, just to name a few. It does work when you quit complaining about how stupid the exercise is and start focusing on what you are supposed to get out of it. The more you all talk, the more I feel like the problem is only 50% Pooch and 50% diva team members. GROW UP AND ACT LIKE MEN IF THAT IS HOW YOU WANT TO BE TREATED!!!!!

I wasn't trying to start a ruckus in starting this thread. I was just trying to lighten things up with a little humor to those that would understand (bring back a memory of some good times, and good laughs we had together).

Besides, we did take these activities seriously. Pooch blew up when guys got creative and had a little fun with the videos. He turned a tape off mid way through and yelled at us right at a point when we were all laughing and coming together. Very unfortunate..... we were all in the "wheel barrow", but we got kicked out.

"Its a Journey" you hurt my head. Stop please Stop!!! There is a huge difference between the nerds who work at microsoft and 23 year old hockey players. The same stuff does not work for everyone. So please stop, I am getting a migrain.

Well, thanks for the negative stereotyping, that is just what this thread needed. The point is, just do it and quit bitching. You seem to thing these will not work with college age kids, you are quite wrong. Coach K, Woody Hays, Bo Shembeckler (sp?), Pete Carol, and many other successful coaches with successful teams use activities some would call childish. Why does it work there but cannot work for our team?
