Football gets field turf
the soccer team (mens) used to be a pretty good team. Now, they are as pathetic as most other sports at BG yet have the arrogance of a good team. They really should be disbanded to make way for women's hockey. the Field House should be open for varsity teams. However, the soccer team has not qualified as one for quite some time.

I hate soccer as much as the next true American, but I will defend our program to the last breath, even if it is just for the hell of it. The manner in which you speak about our program, for me, automatically disqualifies your opinion. While I may not be a fan of soccer in general, I will always support my FALCONS, no matter what sport they may be playing.bobio wrote:the soccer team (mens) used to be a pretty good team. Yes, the Men's team took last place with a league record of 0-5-0 and an Overall record of 4-14-1, but.....bobio wrote:the soccer team (mens) used to be a pretty good team. Men's soccer is nearly dead in the MAC. There are only six schools fielding teams and one of them, IPFW, is not even a MAC school. BG has lost alot of Men's Sports and so has the MAC, which is more as an outcome from Title IX.
Read this article concerning Men's Track in the MAC. The end is near for most Men's sports in the MAC, except Football, Basketball, and Baseball. My best friend from my days at BG came on a wrestling scholarship, foregoing offers from big name programs so his parents could watch him....... we lost wrestling after our sophomore year.
There are bigger issues confronting men's sports at BG than a few arrogant players. I hate the fact that we have lost these sports. Soccer is probably the largest youth sport in America and BG/MAC is losing it..... it does not make sense. Track and Field has one of the highest participation rates in High School sports and we lost it.
Let's ask this question...... would we really be happy if the only men's sports that BG had were football, basketball, hockey and baseball? BG will never produce another Dave Waddle.
One question might be.......
Does eliminating the Men's Sports that are dead or dying, really help the four stronger sports?
I am assuming, Scholarship numbers per sport are set by the NCAA, so scholarships will not transfer to other sports.
We have to assume the salaries for the coaching staff are meager at best and the coaches are professors first, coaches second. So the money freed by salaries might not really help the remain sports.
The cost for facilities and equipment is small, compared to football and hockey.
My take is the saving realized by cutting the other Men's Sports is little. Cost to our reputation, quality of student life, and prestiage is big.

The other problem is that to be D1, I believe you must have a minimum number of sports (the same goes to be in the MAC, we have 1 more team than we need, OU is right at the limit). There may be a minimum for mens as well, though it may be overall totals. So cutting sports to try to fund 4 main teams doesn't really help either.Tech83 wrote:One question might be.......

According to Article 4 (Membership) Section H (Participation) of the MAC By-Laws:PGY Tiercel wrote:The other problem is that to be D1, I believe you must have a minimum number of sports (the same goes to be in the MAC, we have 1 more team than we need, OU is right at the limit). Each full conference member shall participate in a minimum of six conference-sponsored sports, of which three must be football, basketball and baseball for men and three must be volleyball, basketball and softball for women. The conference shall sponsor 11 sports for men and 12 sports for women. A majority of member institutions must compete in a sport for it to be considered a MAC-sponsored sport and approved as a conference sport by a majority vote of the Council of Presidents. Note: Field Hockey, Men's Swimming & Diving and Men's Tennis are exceptions to this last requirement.
