Ask the A.D. from Oct.30

Post by falconfan1999 »

He answered my question!!!

Q: Has there been talk of the CCHA either expanding to add more teams with a better geographic for this region or adding more teams in general?
Jason in Huron
A: As a relative newcomer, I don't know about past conversations, but at our annual meetings in April, potential expansion of the CCHA was discussed. While no specific plan was outlined, everyone recognized that the hockey landscape was changing. As a first step, the CCHA is developing a set of criteria for institutions that might have a future interest in our conference. In the past, the CCHA has been supportive of expansion with the idea that it aids the long-term health of Division I ice hockey. Given Wayne State's unfortunate decision to drop hockey, it's likely there may be some shifting of conferences in the coming years. How that impacts the CCHA is unknown, but our conference will be prepared for a variety of options and directions.

They are Division II and they do (or did) have Division I hockey.

Division II schools are allowed to play Division I in a single sport (I'm not sure this is allowed for football or basketball).

Plenty of Division II schools do this in hockey. In the CCHA, for example, Ferris State, Lake Superior State, Northern Michigan, Alaska and Nebraska-Omaha are all Division II in other sports.

With Findlay college pulling out of hockey andthe United States Air Force Academy leaving the conference after the 2005-06 season to join Atlantic Hockey, the conference was in danger of losing its automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament since eligible conferences must have at least six schools. Further, there is a distinct possibility that CHA will be forced to disband, no with Wayne State droping thier mens program.

CHA has maintained its automatic tournament bid for up to two seasons as a five-team conference, but must forefit their automatic bid after finding a sixth team for as many years as they take this exception.

It has been reported that NCAA Director of Championships Tom Jacobs is pushing legislation that would amend NCAA by-law 31.3.4.4 to allow the Championship Committee for sports that are sponsored by less than 25 percent of a division's membership to develop its own guidelines for dispersing automatic bids. Such legislation would allow CHA to maintain its automatic bid, without penalty, with only five member schools. there is also rumor he is pushing several of the conferences in close regional proximity these schools to accept remaining teams as members and to disband the conference.

Wayne State is indeed DII. But they have DI hockey (both men's and women's) and their fencing is DI because there is no DII fencing. In fact, I don't think there are divisions in fencing at all.
WSU is actually quite good in fencing.

UAF is the same way... DI ice hockey and there are no divisions in rifle, so they're DI in that. Or what I really should say is that all schools with rifle compete against one another regardless of their division in other sports. UAF is a powerhouse at rifle and has won numerous national championships.

All sorts of useless info you didn't ask for! :)

The problem is that Wayne State has dropped their hockey program, so any discussion about their division status is moot!
