Michigan first Play - pdt1081

Post by Rightupinthere »

I'm starting a new thread so as not to hijack the "This Team is [expletive] Good" thread.

For those of us who look upon azz.com as educational as well as entertaining, can you enlighten some of us as to how this play is set?

Thank you, in advance.

one play i personally know that Michigan uses often is the backside sweep on the power play. They send the puck to one side of the net, overloading that side with three on the side forming a triangle. They have one set up directly in front of the net to direct attention to backside defender. Lastly the centre is in slot on the opposite side, he curls around the defender in front of the net for a wide open net.
Dave Ellett is a hero. A Bowling Green Falcon and a Former Jet and Maple Leaf. What more can a Winnipegger ask for.

That's the one.

Thank you, gents.

I can't remember if they had that play back in the 80's. I wonder what their conversion rate is on that play - well, besides "good enough to keep doing it."

that is a basic Triangle, they and we also run variations off the basic weave or follow the pass.
Following your passes results in a weaving pattern by the forwards that causes just enough hesitation by opp D to open up space for forwards.
When you SEND a pass (generally towards a wing), follow it to the side you sent it to. when you RECEIVE a pass, start angling a little bit TOWARDS where it came from (usually towards the center). this play can create multiple results two basic results are one puts players in open ice ready for the pass or two to carry the puck deep in to the zone as we set up a basic triangle.
this is an example of how follow the pass works, ( this is also the basic play described in the movie Miracle) on the break out # C starts by passing to RW cutting ahead. # C then follows pass to right, sliding behind RW. # Once LW sees C pass to right, LW will start sliding over to provide pass support. RW's cutting motion draws Opp LD into center and creates a hesitation. That leaves our C able to move to open space.
RW's plan is to get between defenders and crash the net.
Since LW will be 3rd skater in, he slides to center and hangs back at point high in the slot. now that our LW has slid over, he also provides a back pass option for our C. C has a lane towards net. RW gets inside position on Opp RD Goalie is forced to move out to challenge our C. C can shoot, using the flailing LD as a screen,OR....Hard pass/shot to his winger cutting to back door!

another is one we called Beaver
Sequence 1
Beginning where a properly executed breakaway ends, the Beaver begins with C with puck in center rink skates about half-speed toward net pulling to the left LW having just passed to C appears to be skating down the boards (in this case; the left side). However the LW quickly turns and skates fast to the right, angling toward the faceoff circle (in this case; the right side) LD and P2 RD trail in case of turnover and are right now near the blue line, RD is trailing behind them and skating toward the faceoff dot from his break out position.
Sequence 2 C continues to skate towards the net with puck in the slot angling slightly to left LW skates hard and fast across rink crossing behind path of C LD and RW continue to trail in case of turnover followed by RD who moves to the center of ice to follow in a basic 4-1
Sequence 3
C readies himself for backhand pass to LW while continuing towards the left side of net looking like he is going to take a shot at any moment LW arcs towards right side of net at full speed ready to deflect pass from C into the goal LD and RW trail, but spread out towards boards to ready to holed the puck in the zone off a missed shot or pass where if gathered up quickly the RD will open for a one timer from the top of the slot.
