It'll be a very sad day if the university decides to do away with the hockey program. There's too much pride and history involved here to let this program slip and fall to where it's heading. I hope some solutions are reached fast, because I fear that we are headed into dire straits.Brown n' Orange Wokfu wrote:I hope that folks are paying attention to the first two posts in this thread. With the type of budget issues that ALL of the University faces, this program needs support now - as there might not be many laters....
The longer the walk, the farther you crawl.
I highly doubt that Cartwright would pull the plug on hockey. She is only an interim Prez. More than likely, a full time Prez will be on board by late spring, early summer. Her focus is academics and rubber stamping student affairs, and also making the donors happy by keeping the ship level and moving forward.
The thing that hurts hockey is that it is the most expensive sport to run on a per person basis (per player/coach), bar none. The cost to run the ice rink itself is the biggest expense. Equipment isn't cheap (how many women's basketball jerseys could be purchased with what is costs to buy goalie pads?) While its expenses may be shared with Rec Sports, it is still a significant expense. Throw in travel to such wonderful places like Alaska, Sioux St. Marie, and Nebraska, whether by plane or bus, it still isn't cheap.
That being said, hockey isn't going anywhere. Besides football, it is the one sport that has put BG on the map in a lot of places. All of the hockey alumni that have gone on to some level of success, bring BG a great deal of recognition. You can't beat the attention that Rob Blake gives, whether he is in LA, SJ, or Denver. I remember caddying for Jim Craig of 'Miracle on Ice' fame, at Muirfield Village Golf Club while at BG. He asked where I went to school and I mentioned BG, and the his first response was - "I played with Ken Morrow". With all of the guys from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Boston, Craig remembered that Morrow went to BG.
While BG has had success in football, the number of athletes that have been successful in hockey, far outnumbers those in football.
That is the one thing that Kent State couldn't brag about. Most people can easily mention Lou Holtz, Glen Mason, Josh Cribbs, and Jack Lambert, just to start, but can you name anyone that coached or played hockey at Kent?

You'd have to actually check with Scooter, but I'm willing to bet that expense is not as big as you think. When Scooter came on board, the equipment sponsorships skyrocketed. Do you think the University pays for jerseys? If they do, it's only a percentage. Otherwise, there would be no manufacturer logo visible.cbjhack wrote: (how many women's basketball jerseys could be purchased with what is costs to buy goalie pads?)

Well, earlier this week Cartwright was named BG's President through June 2011! This definitely won't help the BG hockey program and lack of funding!cbjhack wrote:I highly doubt that Cartwright would pull the plug on hockey. She is only an interim Prez. It's sad that BG doesn't support the hockey program like football and basketball, Who cares about MAC football and basketball anyway... The CCHA is one of the top NCAA DI hockey conferences and BG seems to be content to put out a mediocre team. Hockey is the only sport that BG can compete with the famous and top schools in the country and play for a national championship (given the right funding, coaches and recruits).
It's also the only sport getting national/international media coverage on the NHL Network in the US and Canada, ESPNU, and regional coverage on FSN Detroit and Comcast Sports Net (in Michigan and Indiana). this national coverage makes the BG hockey program even more important to the University. It's embarrassing to watch the team get slaughtered on TV while thinking about all the potential recruits, students, coaches/staff, monetary supporters seeing
Also a side note: Cartwright didn’t kill KSU Hockey, the school dropped down to ACHA DI (about = to NCAA DIII) and the program is going strong. While ACHA DI programs give the students and the local population a chance to see fast, high intensity college hockey, it’s not as notable as NCAA DI (or even DIII yet).
BG the community supports hockey better than it supports basketball, however BG the university does not. It's baffling given that the hockey program, even having been down so many years, consistently out draws basketball.sbkbghockey wrote:Well, earlier this week Cartwright was named BG's President through June 2011! I care a hell of a lot about MAC Football and basketball....and care about the hockey program as well. I care about ALL the teams at BG. Your statement was uncalled for.sbkbghockey wrote:Well, earlier this week Cartwright was named BG's President through June 2011! I do too. I should have clarified more! In the National spotlight BG doesn't compare to the coverage and fanbases of schools like Florida, Ohio State, UCLA, etc...Falconfreak90 wrote:I care a hell of a lot about MAC Football and basketball....and care about the hockey program as well. Todd played hockey for B.G. and loves B.G. His heart was truly with the program last year and put everything into being an assistant. I think Shelby and Travis enjoyed B.G. as well. I can't think of any reason why they wouldn't be interested in the position. The way Todd related to the players was incredible, and the way they performed for him was amazing. You could tell he truly cared about the players on and off the ice. From what we saw it was more than a job to Todd- he loves it. Last year with Todd on the bench the players were sharp and focused. If they weren't Todd corrected the situation. Most of the games this year appear to be sloppy. Last night was a mess.

Uhh, maybe that's because BG men's basketball has been horrible the last 5-6 years?BGFan wrote:BG the community supports hockey better than it supports basketball, however BG the university does not. Still, it is notable that when both teams are crappy, hockey draws better. I chalk that up as mostly the disparity in teams that we play against. Hockey faces Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, etc, on our home ice. Men's basketball NEVER plays anybody of note at home OOC, not ever. The women's team has outdrawn the men in recent years and might do so again this year, but even in their best years they can't touch hockey because hockey plays more well-known teams. The opponent is everything.
