Old rosters?
While on vacation near Traverse City, MI, I was wearing a BG Falcons shirt when I entered a gas station. A guy stopped me and said that he used to go to BG back in the 70's. Turns out he was a former hockey player who graduated in 74, played a bit of minor league hockey, for Toledo and Port Huron, among others. Can't remember his name, but I was hoping that maybe someplace there would be an online resource of previous years rosters. The guy was a lot of fun to talk to and really made me hopeful that BG will find a way to keep the hockey program going!

hockeydb.com is the place I always go to for hockey stats and rosters.
I love people who can laugh at themselves. It saves me the effort.

Not Dobek. The guy I met roomed with Dobek. This guy runs a fishing charter service in northern Michigan. Crap, this is really going to bother me.......

Amen to that!rood wrote:hockeydb.com is the place I always go to for hockey stats and rosters.
According to them, though.. Mike Bartley is the only player who finished in '74 that played for either Toledo or Port Huron, but of the two, he only played for Toledo.

It's always possible the data is incomplete/not wholly accurate though isn't it?TG1996 wrote:Amen to that!rood wrote:hockeydb.com is the place I always go to for hockey stats and rosters.

I guess it's possible, but hockeydb is usually ridiculously good about this stuff.Ydfalcon wrote:It's always possible the data is incomplete/not wholly accurate though isn't it?TG1996 wrote:Amen to that!rood wrote:hockeydb.com is the place I always go to for hockey stats and rosters.

Re: Old rosters?
I kinda figured as much, but also, with BG being a smaller school (less so in hockey terms, but still), and this guy only shifting around the minors a little without making it to the NHL, I figured it'd be easy for him to sift through the cracks. Or perhaps it is Mike Bartley, and they just don't have down that he also played for Port Huron.TG1996 wrote:I guess it's possible, but hockeydb is usually ridiculously good about this stuff.Ydfalcon wrote:It's always possible the data is incomplete/not wholly accurate though isn't it?TG1996 wrote:Amen to that!rood wrote:hockeydb.com is the place I always go to for hockey stats and rosters.

Of course, there's always the possibility that the database is accurate and this guy that falconfan1999 ran into is a liar, but it seems like an odd set of circumstances to lie about. Pull out that you went to BG and played in the minors. If I were going to tell a lie, I'd think I'd make it juicier than that.

I also didn't look through anyone who last played in 73, but may not have technically graduated until '74.
That said, a quick Google search showed a "Mike Bartley" that wrote an article about fishing around Mackinac Island. My guess is that falconfan1999 was knee-deep in empties and made up the whole "Port Huron" part of the story.

Re: Old rosters?
Not at all in empties (maybe an empty 20oz bottle of Cherry Diet Dr.Pepper)! I had just finished a Milky Way candy bar because my blood sugar was getting low. I was talking to the guy while he was eating a slice of pizza at a gas station about 6 miles outside of Traverse City. The conversation at that point was about nicknames for minor league hockey teams, and he mentioned those two teams. He seemed to know his stuff about BG hockey. Hasn't been to any games recently and contributes a bit to the program, but nothing major. Didn't seem to be making things up at all. I guess the next step would be to see if I could find a picture of this Bartley fellow and see if it matches up!
Thanks for the help!
Oh yeah, I gave out the ay-ziggy-zoomba address and mentioned that he really needed to get more involved in the hockey program again. They needed the support!

"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Re: Old rosters?
Last thing I heard was that Mike Bartley (aka Bronco ) was hockey coach at Shaker Heights ( or some Cleveland school).
Did this person comment the he was the # 2 all time goals scored?
other possibles:
Bob Schilitts '74 was from Pt Huron, Mi.
Ron Wise '74 and Brian Celentaano '75 are in Toronto
Donnie Boyd '75 has some kind of a hockey job in Columbus CBJ
Roger Archer '75 is Toronto ( best damn shot blocker I have ever seen )
Steve Ball '75 was from Mississauga
Greg Hatch '75 was from Dryden
