Lost 5-3, gave up an empty netter.bgpuckster wrote:Anyone on that was there or knows?

Re: So how did the game go tonight?
Alaska came out strong, lots of whistles and play stopages in the early part of the 1st P, our guys had not rhythm and Alaska beat them for 2 goals.
We came out to start the 2nd trailing 3-0. We fought back, played harder, smarter and got back in the game.
with just over a min to go it all seemed to be paying back, the crowd was rocking (as heard on the raido and in texts) and pulled with in one.
with about 20 sec to go, Alaska found the empty net after some strong pressure.
Had we come a bit better in the 1st it would have been a different game. We did however play, and played well the whole game.
Confidence in this team is building, for good reason, they are earning it.

FWIW, there was a vast difference from the stripes in the first period. When they actually settled down and called the game on the ice it turned into a great game.MACMAN wrote:Had we come a bit better in the 1st it would have been a different game. Give credit to the guys. They were down 3-0 and didn't give up. Last year this would've been a 7-0 game. They came out in the second period and made things happen for themselves. In the first period they came out flat and allowed themselves to be taken out of the game. That was a great second and third period.

Totally agree! I thought they looked tired in the first period. The second and third periods were a totally different team.MACMAN wrote: Had we come a bit better in the 1st it would have been a different game. We did however play, and played well the whole game.

We now have our first win and we played pretty good against a tough defensive team. Our confidence can only get better!
The only thing that bothered me is that in my section we had several individuals that were there to watch the first varsity BGSU team and 1984 team be honored. I have usually been at every home game for years now and I have never seen these people before. All these individuals did was complain about how "terrible" our current team is and when individual players' names were not recognized during the honor ceremony one guy said "leave it to Bowling green to screw something like this up." Not cool.

Unfortunately, this is often the story for us the game immediately following a big victory. It seems like we just don't have the talent, or perhaps the collective mindset to rip off a streak against good teams.MACMAN wrote:

Oh well, 1 of 2 isn't bad.

I dont think those folks got Jack vivians memo....
I am sorry Imissed tonight trip down memory lane due to my kids just well...being exhausted from a fun day, but on another hand, I lived that as a fan, I hold those memories and cherish them, but after reading Jacks thoughts on moving this program forward and ending the negitivity about this and that I found myself more excited about where we are going, than where were 25 years ago, or last year or even a few months ago on the brink.
the future is bright. I had messages from some ...younger friends who are just getting in to falcon hockey
"I had no idea we had such a good hockey team, I am coming to all the home games" one said
another
"this is the most exciting sporting event I have ever been to at BG, I can believe this program was almost dropped"
"you were right these guys are laying it all out there and playing their hearts out"

Re: So how did the game go tonight?
I really had a great time tonight and when I left I wasn't heartbroken over the loss. We really didn't give up and for those last few seconds after the third goal and before the empty netter the building sounded completely sold out. It was fantastic. There were a lot of great efforts tonight too by a lot of the guys.
Great job, BG!

Re: So how did the game go tonight?
I would agree with what everybody has said.
1st period our guys had no rhythm whatsoever and the terrible officiating certainly didn't help either (of course that really never got better). Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it was 10-2 for penalties BG-Alaska? Pretty one-sided... Being a basketball referee, there are games when that type of situation can be correct because one team is just screwing up or playing dirty, but that definitely was not the case on the ice tonight. Alaska got away with some pretty big cheap shots and we got called for some pretty crappy penalties.
Anyway, I was very happy with how they came out in the 2nd. Power play goal at 18:46 and another to follow at 15:33! Way to fight right back! Never gave up hope on them. Great way to bring it within 1 with 2:06 left in the 3rd, unfortunately we just let the puck get away from us and Alaska found the empty net... What can you do? You fought hard and almost came back and tied it - just keep fighting.
It was a fun game to watch - we really played our hearts out and have every game this year. Our record really doesn't show the quality team we have.
Great job guys! We're behind always behind you!

Re: So how did the game go tonight?
The on ice player recognition thing was a bit diappointing. Yes, the '69 and '84 teams were to be honored last night, but the invitation for the President's Club reception and the game afterwards were for ALL Falcon Hockey alumni. We had around 30 former players (including equipment managers, etc.) from the late 60's through the early 90's. I wish they would have passed the mic and let each player give their name and the years they were here. People in the stands would have loved to know who was here. They would have recognized a lot of names and it would have brought back some good memories associated with those guys!!Falcon Frenzy wrote:The only thing that bothered me is that in my section we had several individuals that were there to watch the first varsity BGSU team and 1984 team be honored. "BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Re: So how did the game go tonight?
Pathetic, unplanned, short, somewhat an embarassment, the list goes on and on...then they brought Jack out a second time...not like it wasn't worthy, but it was like oh yeah, we forgot it when we mentioned Jack Vivian 4 times in the first intermission, but he threw some serious money at the program!
"Eyeball to eyeball, I said, 'Dr. Cartwright, don't put me in this position if you plan on dropping hockey. That won't happen as long as I'm alive. I'll fight that to my grave." - Jack Vivian

Re: So how did the game go tonight?
The former players all attended a pregame event as mentioned here and elsewhere which was very well done. All the players introduced themselves to the group of alums/friends etc on hand. They each said a few words. They also seemed to really enjoy talking together- many eras represented. Coach Vivian did a nice job and announced his super gift. All the players and guests were really thrilled with that of course. Dr. Cartwright gave a University update and received applause several times during her short talk
Another highlight was Bring Back the Glory Hockey Committee cochair Mike Pikul. Tremendous speech; extremely well done, very gracious and inspirational at the same time.
So I am sure the game honoring part was OK with these guys as they had been in town and active all day. Not real easy to do those things with a big group, on ice etc.
The big thing was there many, many former players back and I didn't hear any of them not excited to be back and hear from Coach Vivian, Mike Pikul and Dr. Cartwright.
And they witnessed a committed team come back when they could have easily folded. Great effort in the last two periods- and those guys talked about it.

Re: So how did the game go tonight?
Awesome report, ff1!! That was a very classy reception and well done!! Love the comaraderie that Falcon hockey players have with each other, no matter how old or young they are! Before the program began, everyone was talking non-stop and all of them had big smiles on their faces!! It was really neat!! And you are right about Mike Pikul's speech. It was VERY inspirational and emotional!

Re: So how did the game go tonight?
It sounds to me like someone needs to take the role of "Producer" for BG Hockey games. You need to have a set schedule of events for each intermission so things like what were mentioned don't happen.
