Short Week: Short Game Thread
Re: Short Week: Short Game Thread
A couple of points...
On Friday night, we played pretty well, especially in the third. Miami was LUCKY to get the W, not good. Saturday night was a different story. We looked sloppy from start to finish, and the officiating certainly didn't help. I'd say the officiating gave Miami at least a +3 goal margin, and here's why:
In the first, linesman Molina blows three offsides calls, one of which was his fault for getting in the way of a clean entry pass, and another of which was a late whistle on the play that cost a BG goal to be waved off. That goal would have made it a 4-2 game, which is actually pretty manageable. In the second, another late offside whistle was IGNORED by the referee, who then allowed a Miami goal despite the play being blown dead about a second and a half before the shot. Also, Molina (and his partner) missed a pretty blatant offside call on a toe drag from a Miami player at the blue line that put them offside and resulted in a goal. Finally, the poorly assigned penalties after the line fight (including MISSING the MU goalie leave the crease to make a hit) cost BG at least another goal, probably more when you add in the fatigue effect from killing penalties for so long.
As for Wingels shooting a puck into the BG student section, he did, after a lengthy delayed penalty and well after the whistle. He hit and injured a spectator, and should be suspended by the league and stripped of his captaincy by Blasi. Which won't happen, since we all found out just how classy he really is.

Re: Short Week: Short Game Thread
While I'm still angry with everything that happened this weekend on the ice and off, something has happened both on this message board and off of it in my daily life when people are talking about the games this weekend. People are talking about how BG SHOULD have had at least a tie on Friday night if not for at least one fluke goal...and everyone I've spoken to is in agreement that the CCHA has less than a handful of competent officals. There's a reason Molina has been demoted at least once. As BGBill said in another thread, I'd be SHOCKED if Piatrowski isn't at at LEAST one of the BG games this weekend.
But it's time to move on and focus on what is in front of this team and that's ND. This senior class has never beaten ND in regulation and I for one would like to see that change this weekend! I hope that everyone can take their anger and frustration over what happened this weekend (from the puck in the crowd Friday to the fight to the catfights in the crowd to the 10-2 dismantling on Saturday) and join together and get to the arena and SUPPORT this team. That's what we need to be doing. As someone said earlier...move on, but NEVER forget this weekend...have that chip on our shoulders as fans and as players and frankly, when we get the ship righted and face Miami on equal footing, I will relish that W!!

Gotta just move on and forget about the weekend. The hockey program is still many years from being back to respectability, and in today's increasing competitive nature of colleges to recruit the best athletes, things are going to be a challenge. It's important for the administration to announce what they're gonna do with Coach Williams, because heading into an offseason without a coach is a great way to lose your recruits.
There should be no bitterness towards Miami's players or fans. You win and lose with dignity, and Saturday's game was a mockery of hockey. BG's players should have never started to entice the idea of goonery and Miami should have skated the other way and let the game finish out. It's not only painful to watch, but it gives hockey a poor image that's it all about fighting and gooning things up when you're getting smoked.
This team competes hard when they want to. The talent isn't there, but the heart and determination is and that's something that needs to continue in the future of the program. They've played some very good teams very close this season, and those are positives to take from an otherwise abysmal season. However, I don't want to see anything again like I did Saturday, I was ashamed of the players, coaches and the school for the conduct on the ice.

Could you please help me understand how we specifically "started to entice the idea of goonery"? Was it the time that two players jumped on a player after the player lost an edge and glanced off the goalie, was it the time that we dove over a couple of players and attacked a player already engaged, was it the time that we were chirping how bad their team was and how bad our university was on the way to the penalty box, was it the time that we blind sided a player about to get in the penalty box, was it the time that we two handed a player and then started punching him behind the net in the third, was it the time that we shot a puck into the student section???? Oh that is right, that was the Miami players. With fans like you who needs Miami fans coming in our house and out cheering you?

Re: Short Week: Short Game Thread
One problem with that is we're only allowed to play at specified times... There is a PA script for every athletic event which dictates when we can play. Believe me, I would have loved to play every time and drowned out the Miami fans. The other thing is that they would always end up doing their goal chant when play was live and obviously nothing, including sound effects are allowed during play. We had a group of Miami fans up near the band and every time they stood up to cheer a bunch of us were yelling at them to sit down. Trust me, we all wanted to drown them out.rood wrote:
Why on earth did it take the band ten goals before they figured out they could drown out the Miami fans? Surely they were doing the same chants on Friday night?

It appears that whatever came your way, you were deserving of. Including Grover for barreling into Knapp full speed when he had the puck covered and not even attempting to stop. The later goonery by your captain Page was also laughable.

My apologies to the band. I didn't know it was that organized.
I love people who can laugh at themselves. It saves me the effort.

Right, his own decision - he does not have the interest be a referee. He's content working the lines.TheKa wrote:There's a reason Molina has been demoted at least once.

You guys are all ridiculous. You know how to deal with internet trolls? Don't acknowledge them. Don't drop to their level.... what does it accomplish. It doesn't make BG fans look any better, thats for sure.
Disappointing, to say the least.
And as for the BU/Miami game last year.... why bring that up? It would have been better for the CCHA to have another national tourney win. Instead, you guys use it to spite Miami. Classy. Keep it up, guys and gals. Rise above it.

I sort of agree. You always like to see the CCHA do well in the Frozen Four but Miami has a lot of "new" fans who don't understand the game very well and think they've always been the best. I'm proud of BG's past but our recent past and present leaves a lot to be desired.toddpav wrote:You guys are all ridiculous. You know how to deal with internet trolls? Don't acknowledge them. Getting your ass kicked is a hard thing to watch. Our chance to return the favor will come down the road. Time to move on and start thinking about Notre Dame.

It's all right - I didn't even know until my sophomore year. I wondered why we couldn't play at every dead ball in b-ball or every stoppage of play in hockey. While it sucks that we can't play every time, it is nice because our faces can last the whole game. Hockey is lot more taxing for us because of the 2nd intermission mixed in there.rood wrote:My apologies to the band. I didn't know it was that organized.
