Mixed feelings on that one. Hate to see a fellow Falcon out of a job, but he really grew into the role of a douchebag Buckeye, too.

Hope he doesn't make the short list for BG....

If he couldn't do much at Ohio State, I find it unlikely his success here would be much better.

I don't follow college hockey all that closely but didn't Markell turn around the OSU program? I remember when their program was a bottom-feeder in the CCHA and after he was hired they went to several NCAA tournaments and I believe a Frozen Four. I am not endorsing that he be hired at BG but I think his entire tenure at OSU was pretty successful.

Below .500 for four of the last 5 seasons. Sports are very much a "what have you done for me lately?" proposition.
I love people who can laugh at themselves. It saves me the effort.

Some staff turn over was his undoing, in the end if I am not mistaken.
Hum...maybe Williams can bring him in as another assistant...

Markell's ego would prevent him from taking an assistant job with anyone. The guy's douchiness has been well documented.

I agree that he is an idiot. I had to deal with him at the rink I used to work at in C-bus. Didn't know if he was in a good or bad mood. But always appreciated his honesty and hearing him talk about his players with the guys he was playing with. He was still a good player to watch and could usually outplay many half his age. Plus he was a classy guy and was helpful with the youth leagues and unlike some men, he was helpful with the women who were playing in our leagues and during the pick-up games that he was playing in.

I will also say that he has won more games over the last 15 years, than our BG coaches have combined. As a BG fan I wouldn't mind it if our record was 280-267-56 over the last 15 years. Plus a Frozen Four appearance and a CCHA Tournament Title.

Considering that he played at the point in the mid-70's when hockey started to really take off at BG, he should at least be considered. He has seen and been a part of the growth of hockey in Columbus over the last 15 years and can bring that knowledge to BG to help further strengthen the program at all levels - youth, high school, adult, and college. In Columbus he had an informal relationship with the Blue Jackets and new a number of the players. Plus Don Boyd, a classmate of his at BG, is in the front office for the Blue Jackets. He has a network that many candidates applying for the position don't have.

We have a LOT of former players/coaches that are WELL connected in the hockey world who might be applying for the job. Markell isn't unique in that way. Besides, it doesn't sound like he is just dying to come here based on his comments on USCHO:
Markell, a Bowling Green alum, said he would be interested but added that he needed something that would be a good fit for him and his wife Kim, who is a teacher in the Columbus area.
"Obviously, if there is another university that has ties to me emotionally, that would be it,” Markell said. “I would think maybe I might be a good fit, but it might not. Hopefully, if I did decide to go in that direction and apply, I’d be under consideration. It is kind of a program that needs some rebuilding. They’re well on their way financially.”
My vote is for keeping Dennis Williams behind the Falcon bench. PERIOD.
"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Sorry to see this happen, but I thought that OSU was giving him a lot of slack the last few years. .500 in any sport is not acceptable at THE Ohio State University. Actually, I think that one of his problems was Value City Arena. Markell once said that it was a fantastic place to bring recruits ... except on game day. Looked and felt empty with a few thousand fans.

Markell might be a Falcon, but he's a certified a$$hole! Please do not let him even be a candidate for the Falcon Head Coaching positon. He did little at OSU with all the resources and money in Columbus....he I'd hate to see him drive Falcon hockey into the ground!

In other news, Terry Burton declares "ultimate victory!"

A follower of BGSU sports was commenting to me this week, that OSU is now looking into building a hockey-only facility, due to mounting issues with Value City Arena.

I had heard that too, ...from a VERY reliable source.

Which part? The arena project, or the part about Terry doing a Mexican hat dance around a picture of Markell?
