David Solway Chosen to Lead With A Capital “C”
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green Falcons have chosen who will wear the captain’s ‘C’ for 2010-11. Senior forward David Solway (Green Bay, Wisc.) was selected to be the captain for Falcon hockey for this season, announced by the team today.
“David is a great example both on and off of the ice,” said first-year head coach, Chris Bergeron. “He has the full support of all his teammates and the entire coaching staff. David has been a leader of this team in the past and has showed us all that he is ready to be the leader of this team going into the season.”
Solway served as alternate captain last season as a junior with former teammate Tommy Dee underneath two-time team captain, Kyle Page. This will be Solway’s second season as a captain in some capacity.
“This is a tremendous honor to be chosen by my teammates and coaches to be captain,” said Solway. “These are some really big shoes to fill with (former Falcon captain) Kyle Page gone, but I’m very excited to take on this role. “
Solway missed the first two games of the 2009-10 season due to an injury sustained in the team’s exhibition match with Wilfrid Laurier University, but came back on to the scene and tallied an assist in his first action of the season against Providence. Two weeks later on the team’s second home stand he had a four-point weekend (2g, 2a) against Alaska helping the team to its first win of the season. He finished the year with five goals, 13 assists and 18 points serving as the team’s second-leading scorer to return this season.
Bowling Green will not name an alternate captain for the 2010-11 season. This is the first time since 2005 the team has named only one captain to take the ice on opening day when Don Morrison was given the honor. Only twice more since 1975 has BGSU named only one captain when George Roll wore the captain’s patch in 1984-85 and Scott Paluch did so for the 1987-88 season.
The absence of an alternate captain does not faze Solway. After being named the team’s captain this morning he said, “There are a lot of other leaders in this locker room that will have their part in this team’s success, as well.”
The Falcons will take the ice for the first time on Sunday, Oct. 3 for their first official team action in an exhibition match against Wilfrid Laurier University. Last year, the Falcons defeated the Golden Eagles, 7-3.
