Ice Arena Renovation thoughts

Post by gmartin »

Hey guys,

I came back into town this past weekend for the kick off show at the Doyt and I saw the ice arena and had a couple thoughts. I know there have been numerous updates being done on the inside but I think there are four updates that can be done outside to the ice arena that would go a long ways in upgrading the appearance and make it look like a new arena. I have seen no mention of my ideas anywhere in the additional phases after more money is raised.

First, I would like to see the top portion of the ice arena painted orange. They have installed a new roof to the building however you can still see the rust streaks about every three feet at the top of the building. I think if you put a few coats of primer on the concrete to cover up the rust streak and then paint the top of the building orange It would drastically change the appearance of the ice arena. BG painted the top of the Doyt orange under the suites and press boxes and it added a nice touch. Could we do that to the ice arena. Additional colors would spice it up.

Second, can we get rid of those cheesy over hangs over the exit doors. The are falling apart, not level and just look cheap. Put new ones up or get rid of them all together.

Third, could we paint the exit doors orange and put the falcon logo on the door. Once again touching up the building with a shade of orange would add a nice look

Finally, could we get rid of the weeds in the parking lot and repave it, or tear out the lot and replace it all together. With the changes they did to the other lots around campus and the new Stroh lot and new grass lots this lot is going to stand out like a sore thumb. Also can we tear down the old tennis courts and clean up all the trash on the east side of the building.

These changes would make the ice arena look so much better. What are your thoughts.

The lot has needed repaved for years. It's buckling in spots and looks absolutely horrible. The problem is that the building is not considered an athletic facility, believe it or not, so the $ needs to come from elsewhere. Buddy was trying to get money for that all through his tenure as director.

As far as the other phases of the renovations, I believe that the overhangs are to be addressed in one of those, as well as other areas of concern on the outside of the building. Although they have done a lot of cleanup via sand blasting to get rid of the majority of the staining caused by the down spouts overflowing in this phase.

Painting those stone appendages orange would not be a good idea as it would lead to constant matience. They were as was the whole outside of building cleaned, you would not believe how much better it looks now. Those a fore mentioned appendages are the same as those that were on football stadium that began falling off and were removed, my guess is since these have not yet been removed, or surveyed to my knowledge that their lives are limited, and replacing them with another type of appendage is possible,
Next the cheesy over hangs which at one time covered all walk ways are going away, the one over the main entrance infact in a wind storm a few years back blew up and back on top of the low roof causing some damage. What is left would be low on my priority list, but will come in future phase.

The exit doors are are Brown, the team colors are Orange and Brown, home sweaters are agian White, and away is brown. I see no need to make any of the doors on a tan building orange, that would look bad in my opinion.

the parking area was addressed in another post.
Its all coming...but remember the arena is now very well lit, we have awesome new ice making equipment, a magic Dehumidify again, a larger second sheet of ice, more locker room to the point where we can hold a future tournament.

MACMAN - I have to disagree with you about my thoughts of orange. You said brown is fine however the top concrete area of the Doyt is pained orange and if done correctly maintenance has been limited. The Doyt also has orange seats and orange on the endzones and other area of the turf. The Stroh is orange. The soccer field is now enclosed by an orange fence. The softball and baseball fields have orange trim throughout the stadium. A fresh look of orange paint would greatly enhance the appearance. I agree the changes inside the arena are wonderful. We have a new roof to the arena. I just think in the next phase we should do something to enhance orange into the color scheme especially since all other athletic facilities have an orange appearance. Just my thought.

The top of the doyt is now concreet the decorative stone identical to that on the ice arena fell off to the pavement bellow. The two are quite different, examine them closely...smooth concrete and decorative aggregated stone, paint will not work on the stone, where as it does quite well on the concrete, and if that were the case, the rink should use alternating orange and brown panels, but again there are far more important things to do first..
and still feel the ball was doped on the sebo, where orange tinted glass should have been used.

I suggest random drug screening for all balls.

He said that because instead of saying the ball was dropped when talking about the Doyt you said the ball was doped by mistake

Please take down the old lights hanging next to the new lights inside the arena...

I am not sure anyone will read this since the conversation is fairly old; however, I agree we need to improve some cosmetic features of the ice arena. I recall walking into a hockey game recently and seeing paper hand made signs and some type of marker or paint writing across the windows; what an embarrassing situation for our team and tradition to be associated with something like that. I am sure we could raise money for a side project that would go towards some cosmetic features of the arena such as; new signs made by a graphic designer(possible a student to cut cost), painting different features of the arena (inside & out), and if not paint at least create a BGSU or something across the stone top of the arena. Almost forgot, I agree with some of the previous comments something has to be done with entryway. Why not create a museum type of area where the history and tradition of that entire arena could be honored; not just a lobby?

Totally agree! Curb-appeal is critical to the image of quality ... ask any realtor. The entryway should be a gateway, transporting visitors into the world of Falcon hockey. Actually, into the world of skating, ice sports and all those who strap on blades and bring honor to BG and NW Ohio.

How about getting some benches for people to use when putting on their skates? They need to order more and they say they don't have the money!
