WCHA Bound???
Re: WCHA Bound???
@pdt1081 .....I wouldn't disagree with you for one second on that statement... so how is that a positive again then? Listen, I'm not against joining those schools/conference if it means the program can win again, but the feedback on here would suggest people wouldn't come out to see Mankato State, Robert Morris, Michigan Tech, Bimidji, etc. and that's not mentioning the travel budget...
The only way I see this working for all parties is the WCHA forming two conferences.....
BGSU
Canisius
Robert Morris
Mercyhurst
Niagara
RIT (if they can be convinced?)
U of B?
Michigan Tech
Ferris State
Lake State
Fairbanks
Anchorage
Bimidji
Minnesota-Moorehead?
Air Force?

Re: WCHA Bound???
That, and who said OSU was a big name hockey school? Michigan? sure. MSU? Sure. Miami? Only recently. Notre Dame, yep. OSU, nope.
We've enjoyed competition with some of the best teams in the nations while in the CCHA. Let's just not pretend that our crap doesn't stink and think that we are too good to play in another league without the names listed above.
Really? OSU isn't a big name program? The biggest school in the country, that has won a CCHA title in the last 6 or 7 years, has been to a few NCAA tournaments and had numerous prospects jump to the pro's doesn't qualify you? Then BGSU has no shot at returning to glory. You can search my previous posts if you want...I've said from day 1 that if playing in a perceived lesser conference would help BGSU get back to being competitve and competing for NCAA tournament births that I was all for it.
Re: WCHA Bound???
OSU has history, sure. I'm not debating that. I'm just looking at the state of the conference over the past 5 years or so. However, when I think college hockey schools, Ohio State isn't on my immediate list of schools that I consider at the top. Boston College, North Dakota, Michigan, Michigan State... Miami as of recently. Notre Dame. You get the point.
I think we both want the same thing, but have differing viewpoints on how to get there.

O$U is a big FOOTBALL school. I don't consider it a big hockey school. But that's just my opinion fwiw.joehockey wrote:

"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Re: WCHA Bound???
I don't really care for any of our options....WCHA brings obscure Minnesota schools and high travel costs. Forming a new league is risky...who says any of the AHA programs will be willing to stick to an 18 schollie league if the costs become higher thn anticiapted. Go independent?...no thanks Waaaay too much risk involved there an no chance for an autobid. NCHC and Hockey east aren't calling...anf I don't blame them. We offer little if anything to them right now. 15 years ago or 5 years from now...different story, perhaps...but right now, not so much.
I tend to think the WCHA is the safest bet, but forming a new version of the CCHA could be better inthe long run...if the "new" teams have the stones to stick it out...

Re: WCHA Bound???
I am with Drago here. GC is a complete failure as AD. His incompetency rivals Wile E Coyote and Daffy Duck. What in the world is he doing with our hockey program? He is delaying the decision on the crappy WCHA to see if he can join an even worse consortium of jetsam programs headlined by Buffalo who doesnt even have a program??!! GC fiddles as BG burns.gmartin wrote:Drago wrote:Rumor has it that the WCHA commish and existing teams are not happy with BG, due to the fact that they are trying to bring other teams with them. They also aren't happy with the delay in accepting the invitation considering BG is the least wanted team from the CCHA.
Nothing like making the WCHA angry before you even join.....for those who follow college hockey on a national level, you know the WCHA commish is a person you don't cross. It may come back to bite us short term or down the road.
Why is GC still employed? Everyone knows he stinks....
Why is GC employed? Seriously now???? Why do you even post your rude and harsh comments. I believe GC has done more good than harm. He was an integral process in the Stroh Center, the renovations to the ice arena, upgrades to the Doyt, and has made some good coaching hires. More to an AD than just the wins and losses.
Here is another fun game you can play at home with the kids - calculate the winning percentage of the head coaches hired by GC.

Really? What should GC do...publically stamp hs feet over the Big 10, Miami and WMU pulling the CCHA apart?

What is wrong with adding Buffalo who currently doesn't have a program. The Big Ten now has Penn State in their new hockey league. Penn State is a club team.

Penn State is a club team currently, but will be a varsity team when the big ten conference startsFalconian wrote:What is wrong with adding Buffalo who currently doesn't have a program. The Big Ten now has Penn State in their new hockey league. Penn State is a club team.
Buffalo currently hasn't committed to becoming a varsity program.

Re: WCHA Bound???
An option that keeps us in a league with an automatic bid to NCAA is good. If we are in a league where we are likely to play for the spot quite regularly that is good. If we are in a league without too many high costs associated with it that is good. If we are in a league that can have scheduling/divisional relationships that makes scheduling fairly easy that is good.
If we accept the WCHA's offer, we are in a good league. If there is another option that works in some way, then we might be in a better situation.
Either situation allows the following:
BG plays in a league w an automatic bid to NCAA. When you are in, you can win.
BG's updated facilities, recruiting situation due to location, athletic and academic support facilities and our tradition are a positive going forward.
Our coaching staff are/will be winners and are first class according to every hockey person or fan who has ever spent any time at all with them.
Who knows maybe our AD is trying to make a good decision for our university and hockey team on our time table and with as many questions answered as possible? Might be. Whichever way we go, we have a chance to play for a league and NCAA title when our team is good. Which I believe will happen. Absolutely.
Go Falcons!

Re: WCHA Bound???
Before you throw GC under the bus, remember his role in the administration of the CCHA... he has to do everything he can to preserve the league, or he is not better than the forces and people pulling college hockey apart.
Re: WCHA Bound???
If BGSU is serious about keeping hockey and being a factor than it must take the WCHA bid. The schools in the WCHA are serious about hockey and have made commitments toward being successful. Take a tour of all the schools in the WCHA and look at the facilities! Look at the average attendance as well. This will be a good conference with teams we will become familiar with. The fact that they have three Michigan schools gives us some close rivals. Had our program been on it's A game for sometime better options would have been available. Adding schools from the Buffalo area isn't going to make us any better off. This is the best! Time to move.
