NCAA vs THE SIOUX

Post by pdt1081 »

http://www.uscho.com/2012/02/29/ncaa-an ... name-logo/

Some rather interesting information in the comments section, if you can filter through the BS.

Cliffs Notes:
2 Sioux Tribes, one voted to approve the name, one didn't allow their members to vote and the elders just said no.

North Dakota state law requires the school's nickname to be the Sioux.

And then there's this comment:
Im curious about what will happen when the class action lawsuit filed by the tribes against the ncaa goes more public...The ncaa never asked the natives what they actually want... Both tribes were present in religious ceremony preformed in 1969 giving UND permenant and unwaivering permission to use the name. That ceremony is the native equivelant of a binding and lifetime contract. It is much worse for that origional agreement to not be upheld than anything else possible...Mark my words the ncaa is violating native american civil and religious rights and will not succede in droping the na,e and logo... Fighting Sioux Forever!!!

Love it....and good for the U of North Dakota for sticking to their guns on this. The NCAA is a joke inside and out...UND is not using any derogatory images or anything else. What the heck is the problem?

It is a GREAT nickname...

The NCAA needs keep their focus on what really matters. PC issues are not real issues, all it takes some serious cash, and vision and new NCAA is born.

Likely if a new NCAA is born, it will be run by the biggest BCS schools and not include anyone out of the major conferences.

Agreed ... that's what the BC$ is all about. Time for some congressman with kahoonas to start investigating tax-exempt status and the monopoly of that group.

And if Fighting Sioux is insensitive, then so is Seminoles, Chippewas and Fighting Irish. Can you actually give or withhold permission to be insulted?

The NCAA required all schools with "offensive" nicknames to get approval from the tribes. The Seminoles, Illini, etc have done that. The Sioux consists of the two tribes. If the ceremony above actually took place in 1969, that alone should be considered approval from the tribes.

Granted, I know all of that. But does that really make it less offensive? It's either right or wrong. If a kid on the playground gives permission to be bullied does that make it acceptable? The NCAA, as the governing body, is abdicating it's responsibility by taking the cafeteria approach. Personally, I would consider it an honor to have my ethnic heritage represented on the field of play, but the "Fighting Germans" would be problematic.

I've always wondered why EMU couldn't be the "Hurons", as in Lake Huron...
