NHL season to be cancelled Wednesday

Looks like the season is going to officialy be over. Now you'd think that ESPN or FSN would actually bother to start showing college hockey games. Personally I'm glad it got cancelled, the players just need to learn to live with the money they are making, which is still more than most people will see in a lifetime.

usually i take the sides of the players on these types of issues... i mean, they are responsible for bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars to their leagues.

however, when the NHL players are making 75 cents to every dollar, there's a problem. take the cap and learn to live on a minimum of $800,000 per year.

There is a TINY chance there may be a season still. The PA and front office are still meeting. The wednesday press conference will happen no matter what.

Yeah, it is over. It has pretty much been over for a while now. I don't ever side with players in these matters, because it is their multi-million dollar salaries (I don't care in what sport) that causes ticket and concession prices to be outrageous. I've never been to an NHL game because I could never justify the ticket prices (and Ottawa is a long way away  ). I hope the league does something drastic and tells the Player's Association to screw off -- for good. I don't know if they can, but I know that I would be pretty damn happy. The players would all come back, too, because there still wouldn't be more money anywhere in the world.

Think about this: Why don't the players want their contracts to be tied to team revenue? Because they know that, at least for the next 5-10 years, they have ruined the league and revenues will be abysmal. That is unconscionable, in my opinion.

That being said, I was watching the AHL All-Star Classic today on ESPN (GREAT to see some hockey on TV!), and I got to thinking about the Stanley Cup. Now, someone correct me if I am wrong, but isn't there only an implied linkage between the Lord Stanley's Cup and the NHL? Isn't it actually awarded to the best team in North America, and usually it is just assumed that the NHL champ is the best? If that is the case, why doesn't the group of old men who lurk in dark rooms who make up the Stanley committee award the Cup to, say, an AHL champ this year? Wouldn't that be better than not awarding it at all? Makes sense to me, but I could be way off I suppose.

Didn't say it would happen, just saying what ESPN is reporting.

Not so fast - I'm reading reports of how they may have come to an arrangement yesterday.

( I still think they're going to cancel it. I'm just hopeful. )

I think that ESPN should start showing college hockey. I watched the championship game of the Beanpot last night, Boston U and Northeastern! Awesome game! BU won in OT, 3-2. Lots of fans and lots of excitement, exactly what the NHL doesn't have. I wish ESPN would air minor league games and college games. Also, we need votes for Jordon for the Hoby Baker. C'mon everybody, we need to recruit more people to vote!!

This link says that the players agreed to a salary cap at $52 Million. Still negotiating though.

I can't remember who the heck it was (the funny looking guy with the slicked back hair on ESPN who does NHL coverage) said on Sportscenter tonight that 24 hours ago he would have said that the season was dead, but given the salary cap agreement made by the players assn. today, he has his money on hockey starting in March!

I really don't know how to feel about this. I would hate to see these players benefit from this situation, but I sure would love to see some hockey! I am so desperate that I get excited just when they talk about progress in the talks.

players counter the league offer and dip to a $49 mill cap, with two "exceptions". Gary Bettman wakes up and takes a whole 2 hours to tell them to GFY.

I wonder if any fans will have big enough sacks to boycott an entire arena for "opening night", whenever it happens (next month, 2009, you know...whenever)
