Alec Rauhauser named CHN All-American
Re: Alec Rauhauser named CHN All-American
This is a pretty big deal. Recognition on a national level like that is a pretty special thing. I hope he earns more national honors as this postseason awards season progresses. It's great for him individually, and it definitely gives the program a boost, too.

I believe the AHCA is the only “officially” recognized All-American list. Regardless it’s good to see Rauhauser getting deserved attention for his play this season.

The AHCA usually announces their AA teams on the Friday of the Frozen Four.........pretty sure he'll make 1st team West, but we'll see.
Re: Alec Rauhauser named CHN All-American
Can I ask why it's the west? I know college hockey is generally located in the east, but are we really considered to be in the western half? That's just crazy to me, as an Ohioan that has always been someone that thought we were fairly far east. Re: Alec Rauhauser named CHN All-American
They started doing East and West teams in 1958, before that they had just a first and second team for the entire country. I don't know why they started doing two teams, but college hockey has a very real "East/West" History to it.
From the 1960's through to the mid 1980's there was a very real rivalry between "Eastern Hockey" which at that time was the ECAC and "Western Hockey" which was the original WCHA and then the upstart CCHA in the 70's. Eastern hockey was deemed by people in the East as fast, skating, creative hockey and Western hockey was physical, dump and chase and much rougher. Basically if you finished in the top 2 of the ECAC or WCHA you were in the NCAA tourney, which was just 4 teams at that time.
The CCHA then came along and started trying to get WCHA bids to the tourney, or bids that they thought were theirs anyway. We, BGSU, were the main catalyst in this and the CCHA finally got a play-in game in 1977. We went to Michigan and lost. In 1978 they thought they would shut up the CCHA for good by sending Colorado College to BG for the play-in game....beat us on our own ice so to speak. Well that backfired on them as we beat CC, in what was a great game and atmosphere at the Ice Arena, and went on to finish 3rd after losing to BC and beating Wisconsin in the 3rd place game. In '79 the WCHA wasn't going to make the same mistake, so they sent us to play Herb Brooks and Minny in Minny, even though we had the best record in the NCAA that year and should have hosted a game. We lost on horrible ice 6-3. They hosed us again in '83.....keeping us out all together. That '83 team was better than '84, except in goal.
So the "West" didn't really want us and the East already had 18 teams in the ECAC(pre Hockey East days) so they were "full and couldn't take us"
Anyway, I could go on forever.....basically there was a huge rivalry between East and West and then a sub-rivalry going on in the West as well. Jack O'Callahan's line in the movie Miracle of "a bunch of guys from Minnesota and Boston, yea that's going to work" was spot on for the time. East hated West and vice versa and they had separate All American teams as well...........
Even in Lake Placid in 1984 I can remember seeing North Dakota fans with signs that said "Where's the East?". The 1984 Frozen Four(not called that at the time) was an all "Western" affair with BG and MSU from the CCHA and UND and Duluth from the WCHA......so even in the mid 80's the East/West rivalry was still a thing in many fans minds.

Re: Alec Rauhauser named CHN All-American
If you were to split college hockey down the middle to form "East" and "West" halves, that line would most likely be in Pennsylvania, or maybe even slightly further east.mbenecke wrote:Can I ask why it's the west? Re: Alec Rauhauser named CHN All-American
He made the 2nd team.....must say I'm a little surprised after he lead the nation in scoring for D-men for basically the entire year and had a huge +/-
