Disgraceful

Post by Bleeding Orange »

No, I'm not talking about our performance on the ice tonight. Our team left their hearts out there tonight. The puck just didn't bounce our way when we needed it to.

What I am referring to is the group of students under the A-band section by the glass who found it appropriate to start a sarcastic "Hobey Baker" chant after UAF scored their fifth goal. That was a complete insult to everything that this team, and Jordan in particular, has accomplished this season not only as a team, but as a program. Sure tonight was frustrating, but for anyone who stuck around until after the game and saw Jordan and Jonathan holding each other while they cried, you know that this weekend was infinitely more frustrating for the team. I was appalled at hearing our students do that to a kid who has done so much for this program, and it was inexcusable.

There was a rather tall member of this board who was leading this, and I am desperately holding back from calling him out by name right now. He knows who he is, and I hope he knows what a jackass he made out of himself and our fans tonight. I hope he is proud of himself.

That is pretty sad to hear our own students chanting that. Jordan is a class act and for him to hear that probably felt like a dagger to his heart. These BG fans have a lot of growing up to do.

I think you have mis-understood the reason behind that cheer. I was playing in the band tonight and I believe they started that chant to show their support of Jordan, not to be nagative. I believe they were expressing he is a damn good goalie and his accomplishments are obvious to everyone despite what is happening in any one particular night. I think perhaps talking with this person would be in order to clear this up. I know him to be a much better fan of BGSU athletics, and he knows of the accomplishments of the team and Jordan.

I also took it that they were honestly trying to be supportive of Jordan. To me, it was more of a "hey, who cares about this game, you're still the best" kind of thing. I'm sure that certain tall member of this board will be on to make his intentions clear. I know who at least a couple of those people were and they are some of the most sincere and diehard BG fans around.

I too would question the timing of that cheer, simply because I knew some people would take it out of context. When they first started it, I'm not sure that was the best time to do it. When they continued it after the game, that seemed a little more appropriate. I have no doubt that they meant well, no matter how it may have come across to some people.

I sincerely do hope that I was wrong. If I was, I will gladly admit it. The timing, though, seemed more than a bit suspect to me.

I'm actually more appalled that the drummer for the BGSU band didn't seem like he knew what he was doing. Then again the band was rather makeshift, so I'm guessing the first-string drummer was Palm Beachin' it this week.

The rest of the flock seemed fine. Just the drummer sounded out of place.

Considering I was one of them, let me explain! They scored and we all got pissed and said why not still cheer Siggy on and started that cheer. Afterwards we realized it could be taken the wrong way but you can't change the past...

I really think you need to give the BGSU fans a little bit of credit. I understand how it could have been taken, but I also personally know the "tall BGSU fan" you're "desperately trying to not call out" (sorry, but there aren't many suspects when you narrow it down like that) -- and he loves this team more than anyone else I know. It could look like an asshole gesture, but this campus and the community are incredibly supportive of Jordan, and I think the cheer/chant was a definitive coup de grace for a player who's contributed an infinite amount to this team.

CONGRATULATIONS JORDAN AND THE FALCON HOCKEY TEAM ON A GREAT SEASON. WE'RE PROUD OF YOU!

I am going to work under a couple of presumptions here. First, you are new. And second, you have not went to the band board before.

With that being said the drummer was FINE! When it was realized maybe a week before the game that plans had not been made to have a band at the hockey game this past weekend the alumni mobilized and was able to get a group together for saturday night at basically the last minute. We had pretty good instrumentation except a drummer. We didn't even have a complete drum set when we started playing saturday night. One member of the current band, a saxaphone player I think, offered to do his best to provide us with a drummer once all of the pieces of the set were present. We ended up having three play on and off and I for one am very greatful for the part they played. So, to call their performance disgraceful, which is the name of the thread, and to be appalled is just crazy. We stepped up to the plate when others didn't. We could have sounded like a third grade beginning band and it still would have been better than the canned crap (DJ) that was the alternative. I hope better planning is done next year to provide support to ALL of our winter teams in post season, but we did the best we could with the hand dealt so excuse me for taking offence to your comments.

I don't know if you are talking about the guy with the long hair that did the 2nd and 3rd periods or not, but he doesn't even go to bg. Mike asked me if i knew someone that could play, and my friend Bruce (who is one of the best drummers i know of) was nice enough to try and do what he could. Remember that he has never played with the band before, or played those songs. I thought he did a great job for what he was given and given he just walked up there and started playing.

1st, the Hobey Baker Cheer: While I didn't start the cheer, I was one of the ones taking part in it. Know Metz and the others setting near me, that cheer was meant as nothing other than supportive. Siggy is still one of the best goalies I've seen in a long while. When his game is on, he is almost impossible to beat. Unfortunatly it would seem that his game the last couple nights wasn't totally on. It happens to everyone. Doesn't matter, I am still very proud of Siggy and all he's done.

2nd, the A-Band: For being thrown together in about a weeks time, I think they did the best job they could. The drummer situation was kinda hairy, but I am very glad that whoever it was in the green shirt came over things got much much better. I'm sorry I wasn't able to play, but my family decided to come up to the game with me, so I was preoccupied with them. Thank you though for those of you who did play.

Finally In 04:

I am going to work under a couple of presumptions here. First, you are new. And second, you have not went to the band board before.

Neither of those statements, which are probably true, are relevant to the fact that I know what i heard, and that the drummer was off.

When it was realized maybe a week before the game that plans had not been made to have a band at the hockey game this past weekend the alumni mobilized and was able to get a group together for saturday night at basically the last minute.

Which is what I said.

We had pretty good instrumentation except a drummer.

Which is what I said.

We didn't even have a complete drum set when we started playing saturday night. One member of the current band, a saxaphone player I think, offered to do his best to provide us with a drummer once all of the pieces of the set were present. We ended up having three play on and off and I for one am very greatful for the part they played.

Which makes sense because I have more faith in the BGSU band to have a main drummer that doesn't sound like that.

So, to call their performance disgraceful, which is the name of the thread, and to be appalled is just crazy.

Nobody's calling "their performance" disgraceful. Nobody's even saying the drummer's performance was disgraceful. It just sounded bad. A+ for effort and all that ballyhoo, but simply put it sounded out of place, which is what I had said all along.

We stepped up to the plate when others didn't.

Others? Who are the others? The hockey team? WAIT! Are you taking shots at our hockey team???? WHAT? You think our hockey team is disgraceful, which is the name of the thread??? How dare you kind sir!!!!!

We could have sounded like a third grade beginning band and it still would have been better than the canned crap (DJ) that was the alternative.

Again, nobody's blasting the band's performance as a whole.

I hope better planning is done next year to provide support to ALL of our winter teams in post season, but we did the best we could with the hand dealt so excuse me for taking offence to your comments.

Don't be offended for something I said that didn't have anything to do with you.

The drums' beats were amusing, and I imagined the rest of the band would have a sense of humor about it, because when I heard it I figured the real drummer wasn't there. And I was right.

But hey that's nothing compared to what you said! You said the hockey team played disgraceful and that's all I needed to hear to be offended. Good day.

Okay, so we the dummer wasn't the greatest. But everyone made due, the A-Band did the best they could with what they had, and personally I was paying more attention to the HOCKEY that I (okay, my boyfriend, but no matter) paid three bucks to see. Thank you A-Band for your contribution to the game.

Professional drummer or no, I was still getting into Ay Ziggy Zoomba. So really, does it matter?

Wow. You said appaulled and not disgraceful, my mistake and I apologize for that. All of this was discussed on the band board which makes my comments more than relevant. If you had been on the band board and had read any mof my other posts you would know who and what I was refferring to. But you didn't so I won't turn on the light because I am sure it's nicer in the dark. Finally, one misunderstanding on what was said or done has created quite enough contraversary on here I had hoped it would not happen again. I guess I was wrong. If you knew me, you would know how I feel about Falcon Hockey. So if I have offended you then I guess I will have to sleep with that each and every night. Well, I am going to put this behind me. perhaps we will meet and actually get to talk this through.

Whoa. What the heck is happening here?

Two things:

(1) I have been contacted by the person(s) that this thread was addressing, and I am happy to say that I was sorely mistaken about the intent of the chant. And in hindsight, to be perfectly honest, I should have known better. The people participating in this chant last night are some of the best Falcon fans that we have. I suppose I was just upset after the game and was feeling a little too confrontational. To all involved, I am truly sorry, and thank you for all of your support for Jordan and this team. I know that they all feel as I do that despite this disappointing weekend, this has been one of the most inspirational teams to ever don Falcon hockey sweaters.

(2) To those of you bashing the Alumni Athletic Band, STEP THE F--- OFF! You people have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, and quite frankly, you sound like infantile rubes. The people who played last night did so on less than a weeks notice, showed up with their instruments at 6:00 and played their butts off all night long. Their support meant a lot to fans like myself, and I'm sure it meant even more to the team, which is the most important thing. What they did last night in volunteering to play for this game on such short notice and with almost no practice is, in my opinion, the epitome of Falcon fandom. For the two of you to berate their efforts shows a complete lack of class. If you can not find it in your puny little souls to thank them for their efforts, then go ahead and buy a maize and blue hockey sweater. Yost is filled with losers like you and you should fit in there very, very well.

A third thing: I appologize to everyone for opening these cans of worms.
