McKee, Sertich and Sterling Make Up 2005
Hobey Hat Trick
MINNEAPOLIS - The Hobey Baker Foundation is proud to introduce the
2005 Hobey Hat Trick: Cornell sophomore goaltender David McKee,
Colorado College junior forward Marty Sertich and Colorado College
junior forward Brett Sterling. One of those three will win the 2005 Hobey
Baker Memorial Award, which will be presented Friday, April 8, at
Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
McKee, a native of Irving, Texas, led the Cornell Big Red to the ECACHL
regular-season and playoff titles as well as the NCAA quarterfinals this
season. The ECACHL Player of the Year, Ken Dryden Award winner as the
league's best goalie, first-team All-ECACHL selection and ECACHL
all-tournament goaltender, McKee enjoyed a stellar season for the ECACHL
champion Cornell Big Red. He leads the nation in goals-against average
(1.24), save percentage (.947) and shutouts (10), all among the best
single-season performances in college hockey history. McKee's 27 victories
are second-best in the nation, and his winning percentage (.813) ranks
third. McKee is a Hotel Administration major.
Sertich and Sterling, the first teammates in the Hobey Hat Trick since it
was introduced in 2002, have led Colorado College to the NCAA Frozen
Four for the first time since 1997. The Tigers shared the MacNaughton Cup
as the WCHA's regular season champions.
Sertich, a native of Roseville, Minn., was the 2005 WCHA Player of the
Year and led the conference in scoring. Sertich leads the nation in points
(64) and points per game (1.52) while ranking second in both goals (27)
and assists (37). The National Player of the Month in December, Sertich
has had at least a point in 33 of the Tigers' 40 games entering the Frozen
Four. Sertich is a History major who volunteers with Colorado Springs
schoolchildren and participates in the Colorado Springs "Caring and
Sharing Hands" food drive.
Sterling, a native of Pasadena, Calif., was a first-team All-WCHA selection
and was named the Most Valuable Player of the WCHA Final Five. He leads
the nation in goals (34) and power-play goals (18) and ranks second in
points (63) and points per game (1.50), trailing only Sertich. A fifth-round
draft pick of the Atlanta Thrashers in 2003, he was a three-time WCHA
Offensive Player of the Week selection. Sterling, an Economics major, has
a 3.5 grade-point average and is a WCHA All-Academic honoree. He reads
to Colorado Springs schoolchildren and participates in the Colorado
Springs "Caring and Sharing Hands" food drive.
Ten finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award are determined by vote
of the nation's 58 Division I head coaches, along with the Preliminary
results of the online Vote for Hobey. The recipient is selected by the vote
of a 25-member selection committee, along with the Final Voting results
from Vote for Hobey.
The Hobey Baker Memorial Award is celebrating its 25th season of
honoring college hockey's top player. The winner of the 2005 Hobey Baker
Memorial Award will be announced on Friday, April 8, at Nationwide Arena
