Realizing that there are many out there (and some on this board) who are new to the world of college hockey, here's some interesting tidbits about this weekend's foes:

St Lawrence (enrollment 2000) and Clarkson (2900) are located in the towns of Canton and Potsdam NY, and are only about 12 miles away from each other. Way up north, half way between Syracuse and Montreal. Both are small towns, pop 6100 and 9700, respectively...but both are currently putting more butts-in-the-seats than BG.

Clarkson is 9-4-1 overall, ranked #16 nationally. They are 5-2-1 in the ECAC (that's the Ivy's plus the Ivy Wanna-be's) currently tied for 4th in that twelve team league (altho they have not yet played any of the other top teams in the league). They average 3.79 goals per game, while allowing 2.86. Their power play converts at 21.6%, and they kill 86.0% of their penalties. They average 24 penalty minutes per game, and look to have a balanced scoring attack. #91 Guthrie leads with 6-11-17, #32 Dodge follows with 6-10-16, and they have 7 other players with 10 or more points. 9 Clarkson players are NHL drafted, and they're young...5 of their top six scorers are freshmen or sophomores. Their top goalie McNulty is 6W-2L, 2.40gaa and .912 save%, the backup, Leggio is 3.11/.894. The head coach is 1986 BG grad George Roll. George was a member of BG's 1984 national championship team, and for two seasons was a teammate of Scott Paluch. Roll is in his third season at Clarkson after spending 6 successful seasons at Oswego State (NCAA div 3), and was a candidate for the BG job four years ago. Clarkson has been playing varsity hockey since 1920, and has been to the 'frozen four' seven times (most recently 1991) but has never won a national championship. Former BG coach Jerry York (now at Boston College) began his coaching career at Clarkson 1972-79.

St Lawrence is 11-5, ranked nationally at #14, and are 6-2 in the ECAC, tied for 2nd. The Saints have not yet played any of the other ECAC powers (Colgate, Cornell or Clarkson), but did split two overtime games AT Wisconsin (currently #1) back in October. They average 3.8 per game while allowing 2.9. Power play is at 18.6%, and the pk is 88.4%. They average 16.9 penalty minutes per game, and have not yet been hit with a major penalty this year. Top scorers are #27 Trevelyan 5-14-19, and #12 Zeiler 7-7-14...altho they also feature balance, with 6 other players with 11 or more points. Pesony looks to be the primary goalie 10W-4L, 3.00gaa, .879 save %...backup Ackley 2.47/.925 in limited action. St Lawrence roster features 4 NHL drafted players, and the coach(Joe Marsh) is in his 21st season. They also have a long and proud hockey tradition, dating back to 1926..they've been to the frozen four 9 times, most recently in 2000, but have never won it all. They have had four straight losing seasons prior to this year's good start. Former BG and MSU head coach Ron Mason is a 1964 graduate of St Lawrence.

a big reason they get better attendance is because new york is a way bigger hockey area. I grew up in buffalo and most of the people who i played with in high school talked about either going to clarkson, canisius, niagara, or st. lawrence to play. the difference between new york and ohio is that we got more people at our high school hockey games than we did at our football games. it's just a different state of mind there. i know some people that have gone to school here for 4 years and never been to a hockey game when in my opinion is the best sporting event to go to on campus because of the non stop action, all the chants for different situations and the occassional pep band is there

Just a warning for everyone...

I dont know if this applies to all games or just the one last Friday, but St. Lawrence has a tendency to run the opposing goalie. They ran Vetri three times last Friday, once resulting directly in a goal.

So be prepared.

Hockey isn't the only sport suffering from a lack of butts in the seats. Its seems like the house that roars has not quite been living up to its name so far this season. It seems like the student body just doesn't seem to care about any of our athletics right now except for a few of us diehards. Thank goodness for the Anderson Animals cause without groups like them our attendence would really start to suffer. Hopefully we'll see a big turnout for both hockey games this weekend, especially Clarkson, we seem to ahve a bit of a small rivalry in the all time series against them. I know I'll be there, I'm even dragging my little brother (hopefully a future falcon) all the way from Cuyahoga Falls for the game.

A sweep this weekend would be really nice. Get some momentum going into the winter break. To beat 2 very good, ranked schools, from the east coast at home would help catapault us into the 2nd half. It won't be an easy task at all but if we play together and catch some breaks here and there we can do it. Come on guys let's get these 2 and protect home ice!
