Disturbing letter to editor
Re: kevin gordon article in S-T 3/11
As horrible as that article sounds, it's definitely needed. I can remember a few years ago (well, maybe a few more than a few) the team was in a slump with very little for Gordon to write about. He wrote an article about how dingy the Ice Arena looked. Many people were upset with the article. Funny thing is that within 2 weeks there was new paint being applied to the inside of the building along with a few other very small projects. There is no way the University can ignore this article.

Yea its done for.
The university airmails packages at 40 bucks a pop cross town, dumps tons of money into a 3rd rate bottom feeder going no where football program, puts up a bunch of unapproved over weight solar panels on the roof of the rink that are the very cause of many of the leak issues, and brings in this moron as president who pulls approved funding to help the rink, who is still questioning that she will pull the hockey program? MAybe if the University had not bought the Hannah house we would have enough money to take care of the rink? wonder what its devalued to now?

It does not help that there are faculty conspiring to goad students into fighting money for the new basketball arena. If that effort were to manage to derail the student fees going towards the project, it could force a delay in building the structure, despite what the moronic and easily duped student leaders say. Plus such a blow, if the project moves forward, might well be enough to "cover" cutting hockey. Thus, it is not simply about Kirm Stroh's building now.
You have a leader of the BOT who has said BGSU "won't be doing everything it has been doing" in the near future, and it wasn't an "if." Something is going to go academically.
Kent State had no hockey tradition, it is a valid point to note just having Cartwright here doesn't mean she is bent on killing hockey programs across the nation. But she knows she is a short-timer, and again, I don't think they got who they wanted in their search because nobody wants to walk into a job simply to be a axe man...or woman.
Some of my new and very non-BG based contacts that my work has generated, who know the new prexy personally, say she simply wasn't keen on retirement, thus her arrival at BGSU. I won't be able to generate much news from those contacts quickly, so I don't know if I'll gain much else from that.
It seems clear bad news is coming, even if it may not ultimately turn out to be about BGSU hockey. But it is fair to say Athletics was told to come up with plans for various possible actions, and logically there would be some rumbles about hockey among other sports.
If the faculty see fit to lobby the state by way of intentionally low-key prodding and "advising" of students, the reverse is fair game.
I might suggest a counter referendum be pushed forward. With not only an affirmation of the additional fee, but that part of it be spent to secure the facilities and future of BGSU hockey. Get the signatures, and put them head-to-head. I suspect the student athletes, their boy and girl friends, friends, and such, on their own numbers, could pass such a bill. Add support from the campus students, and it is doable.

I'm going to write emails tonight. One of the items I will ask for will be the CBA to cutting.
If Dr. Cartwright is using numbers to eliminate the program, I want to see those numbers.............and debunk them.
I fear the die has been cast and all this will be too little too late. I'm sickened. I'm wearing a BG shirt today. It may be the last time I wear it. I've never been angry at my Alma Mater.

Former Board of Trustees member Mike Wilcox is a BGSU Hall of Fame Athlete. I remember him saying just a few years back at an ASC (Administrative Staff Council) meeting (when he was on the Board) that hockey was the only sport where BGSU realistically could win a national championship. He was extremely pro-hockey and said he played on the hockey team at one stage. He also paid a ton of money to get that nice boardroom in the Sebo Center named after him. I think he is in the BGSU Athletic Hall of Fame for Lacrosse so he knows how it feels to have a sport near and dear to you cut.

I'm trying to organize as many people as possible including a few former players and some media members on this group.
Let this be known, no matter the outcome, Cartwright must go.

'Everything on table' at BGSU, but no hockey recommendation
Written by By KEVIN GORDON & HAROLD BROWN/Sentinel Staff Writers
Wednesday, 11 March 2009
New and updated 11:07 a.m. 3-11) “Everything is on the table,” Bowling Green State University Trustee Michael Marsh said this morning about possible cuts at the university.
He also said that no decision has been made about cutting men’s varsity hockey and that BGSU President Dr. Carol Cartwright has not made any recommendation regarding hockey.
Rumors about the fate of the program have been flying for several weeks and intensified late Tuesday.
“I will say that everything is on the table because of the severe financial situation. I’m not one that wants to limit opportunities for young people. The (athletic program) has lost three-quarters of a million dollars this year in spite of our best efforts. That can’t continue. The academic departments know they are in for severe changes and athletics can’t be treated any differently,” Marsh said.
He expects the final decision on programs to rest with Athletics Director Greg Christopher. “This will come from the AD. I do not know that the board will have to pass on it, although the board may be consulted. There is no truth to the story that Dr. Cartwright has made a recommendation or that there has been any meeting of the board or any vote.
“It is true there have been numerous planning meetings to try to find ways to fit all of the grains of sand into a bucket that keeps getting smaller.
“It’s not an option that everyone will be happy with the results. Absolutely everything is on the table,” Marsh said.
He did confirm the trustees have a long-standing retreat scheduled for next week. The focus of that event is to talk about academic programs. The next scheduled meeting of the trustees where action could be taken is April 23.
“We are way beyond not buying paper for copiers to make the budget work,” Marsh said.
Marsh, whose term on the board ends in mid-May, said it has not “been any fun” to be a part of the budget woes. “We’re talking millions of dollars we have to find.”
BGSU spokesman Dave Kielmeyer said Tuesday night that “no decisions have been made whether to cut any university programs, athletics or academics.”
All university departments have been asked to develop a variety of scenarios regarding budgets and programs.
The school believes it is looking at a funding shortfall of between $6 million and $10 million when the new state budget begins July 1. Cartwright has said that if that figure worsens, cuts in programs will be need to be made.
Falcon hockey head coach Scott Paluch said this morning “no decision I’m aware of has been made.”
Paluch, who completed his seventh season last weekend, has just one year left on his contract.
Athletics department spokesman Steve Barr and Ice Arena director Buddy Powers, an assistant coach on the national championship team, said they had no knowledge of the decision to cut the program.
Multiple sources within the Central Collegiate Hockey Association said they haven’t heard of BG’s intention to drop the program which dates back to the 1969-70 season.
Since winning the NCAA championship in 1984, the Falcon program has fallen on hard times.
BG hasn’t had a winning record overall since 1997 and has had just one winning season in the CCHA in the last 13 seasons, that coming in 2005.
The Falcons have finished last in the league in three of the last four seasons, including records of 11-24-3 overall and 8-19-1 in the CCHA this season. BG hasn’t played in the NCAA playoffs since 1990.
The Falcons are an original member of the CCHA which began with the 1971-72 season.
The university recently decided to scrap a $4 million renovation of the Ice Arena, which has become one of the CCHA’s worst buildings.
The money was going to be used to replace the arena’s ice-making equipment, repair leaks in the roof and other parts of the building, and improve the facilities’ infrastructure.
The arena received new boards and lighting two years ago and outside of some new paint, it has been largely neglected by the university since the north end seats were added for the 1989-90 season.
Meanwhile, virtually every other school in the CCHA and in the three other major leagues nationally have renovated their arena or built a new facility.
Further fueling the rumors about the elimination of the Falcon program is Cartwright was the president at Kent State when that school terminated its varsity program after the 1993-94 season.

Re: kevin gordon article in S-T 3/11
Well, here it goes. That article should be placed in the fiction section. Where are his facts? It reads like an updated version of Chicken Little! The comments about President Cartwright and the Kent State hockey probram could not be any more vague and adds NOTHING of substance to the article. It only promotes fear and advances negative stereotypes about her. What is your end game Mr. Gordon?? The fact is we as fans and those who use the facility (youth hockey, etc.) let this happen. As soon as Pooch was hired a drive for a total renovation of the Ice Arena should have been started even if it had to come from outside money. This program has put enough players into the NHL to have some substantial dononr. Where have they been? Finally, where do you suggest we come up with enought money to fill a 6-10 million hole from the state? Something has to give and no mater what it is it will suck for people connected to BGSU. Where was this outcry when men's track and field, men's cross country, men's swimming and diving, men's tennis, and women't tennis were cut? I'm sorry if this pisses many of you off. And all of you know I love hockey. No mater what cuts are made, the taxpayers need to demand to see they numbers used as justification. If they are fair then the job was done correctly. If they are not fair then I will right there to raise hell. We just need to get information before breaking out the pitchforks and torches.

Re: kevin gordon article in S-T 3/11
It has been tried. The fact of the matter is that the university hasn't been interested in maintaining one of the most used facilities on campus. While Buddy Powers was coach he tried and tried to get university support for some locker room renovations as well as new coach's offices and they wouldn't budge and wouldn't even consider starting a fund raiser for the project. Buddy asked if he could start one on his own and they gave their blessing and said good luck. His success in raising the funds startled most of the naysayers but, as you can see, beyond the new boards, a little lighting and a coat of paint in the years since, not much else has been done. It's the Journey... wrote:Well, here it goes. First off, take a look at THIS and see how much hockey REALLY costs the university. Pretty surprising that hockey costs quite a bit less than both basketball programs. That should definately be included in anyone's letter!BGDrew wrote:What e-mails have people been sending? I'm sort of so angry right now that anything I write wouldn't be taken seriously.

Under "Operating Expenses by Team" it lists hockey as having a $211,791 operating expense. I'm not sure if this includes building/bus operating expenses.dforde wrote:Does it report hockey revenue anywhere? Looks like they report football and hoops and then lump hockey in with all the other sports.
Not sure about revenues
My wife forwarded the information to Jordan. Does anyone know how to get ahold of Mike "Doc" Emrick with the New Jersey Devils? I would think he would want to know about this. We need to get former players/coaches involved. I think I'm going to contact Coach York. I would assume he would have an e-mail address on BC's website. What about Ron Mason? I hope somehow this info gets to Rob Blake, Kevin Bieksa, Ken Klee, and all the other NHL'ers and minor league players (current and retired).
I've had a really bad week...I live in Findlay. We are going thru our 3rd MAJOR flood in a year and a half, I'm stressed to the max about that, the economy, and work. And I come in this morning, and am faced with this. I will do ANYTHING to not let this happen. I love the hockey program and the university, but this would tear my heart out. Whatever we have to do, I want to be a part of it.
Thanks,
