It is not possible to practice 7 days a week. Last I knew, the NCAA mandated at least one day a week off. I know this was the case a couple years ago. The players had Sunday off. The training staff was available for treatments on Sunday, but that was it. The video process is a lot better now than it was a couple years ago. Everything was VHS before. Now there is a DVD system in place which, to me, seems like it would be a lot easier to use.

I know everyone is excited that I'm back. I was staying off here becuase I wanted to see how everyone else was responding to the terrible continuation of the season.
I am not going to rant and rave for coaches head but rather help to fill everyone in on the the subjects going on.
First the recruiting issue: I would say that 95% of the recruiting was done by Fogs. So you guys can blame him for the horrible recruiting that has been done recently. Pooch however doesn't have a clue about the kids that are coming in to the program each year. If Fogs said that there are good players then that is good enough for Pooch.
Second the varsity Vs. Club: I am pretty sure this is a joke but if there are any people out there that would think that would be a close game, come on. Even if the varsity team played their worst (which looks to be what is going on recently) it would still be a blow out. My time at BG, I was friends with many players on the club team and they would be the first to tell you it wouldn't even be a game.
Third the partying and attitude: I am sorry to say this but I told everyone this would happen. I said that at the beginning of the year that the coach makes the players hate playing hockey and takes all the fun out of the game, I have seen it the four years I was there. It happened every year. What is likely going on right now is that everyone on the team has had enough of dealing with the coach and playing the style of hockey that clearly isn't working. People can say what they want the players are likely giving it their all in games becuase when it comes down to it they hate losing and getting embarssed. I am sure that you are seeing the boys out at the bars partying and that is because there is a feeling that they are trying their hardest but getting out coached and forced to play a style of hockey that doesn't work. They are also losing every freaking game. The fun and excitement is leaking away fast so they are trying to find other ways to at least enjoy collage. Hence the partying. Also, unless things have changed since I have been there sundays was video, practice and a workout. It didn't begin till 11 so I don't know about the 8am stuff. oh ya there is also usually video twice more throughout the week. At least.

I know you've taken a lot of flack on here, but it's more interesting with you on this board.

If Fogarty took the lead in recruiting, who's doing what now? However shaky previous recruiting classes may or may not have been, is this one going to be worse? If anyone has some insight, help me out here.

Currently we only have 3 players committed. Two for next year and one for 2008. The two for next year look very good. Jacob Cepis is a forward and is currently leading the USHL in scoring. He had a 2-3 week stint in December where he'd fallen off a bit, but has since made that up and is back on top.

The second player is a goalie from Toledo (**gasp** a local kid) that is currently playing on the US Under 18 team. For the most part, only the best of the best make that team so take it for what it's worth.

The kid coming in in 2008 is a defenseman also playing in the USHL and, from what I have heard, is a hell of a player. It's hard to judge a defenseman from his stats (unless he's offensive minded which this one isn't) but if you trust Heisenberg's take on him, he's the top recruit out there in the USHL for 2008.

quick comment for a previous post. Not only does Pooch suck at coaching but he breaks NCAA rules all the time. In the summer when we skated and just played shinny he would come in the stands and watch the practice or whatever the captain was doing that ice session. Thats against the NCAA rules. Also I think on average throughout my four years with Pooch, I probably got about 1 day off a month. He would have sunday workouts, and half practice. Monday was suppossed to be our day off but it was what the players callled an optional mandatory which meant that it was offically optional but if you didn't come in, you took a lot of heat from coaches. Fogs and Pooch would go around at the end of the day on Monday and touch all the players gear to see who wore it and who didn't. The people who didn't got in serious trouble. So we probably only got about 1 day off a month.
This is another reason why Pooch is an idiot. He never gave the players time off to recoup, and everyone needs a break once in a while. Its amazing what 1 day off will do, there is actual excitment to go to the rink after it. Not to mention it is against NCAA regulations. If you don't believe me, go to the rink on sundays, you will see them split 1 hour session between half the players. Then go on monday and you will see players on the ice just dicking around becuase they have to be there.

You would think these "players" would take the Monday ice time a little more serious based upon their record

Get serious. Everyone needs a day off now and then. Hockey is a pretty demanding game to play. Those guys should have one day a week off ice.

Might want to research that a little better. I'm pretty sure that as long as the coach isn't on the ice with the players there is no violation.

thats incorrect, the coaches aren't allowed in the rink at all when the players have preseason icetimes.

Regulations for computing the ice hockey playing season are set forth in Bylaw 17.1, General Playing-Season
Regulations. Institutions that conduct women’s ice hockey shall comply with the same playing and practice
season legislation that currently exists for men’s ice hockey. (See Figures 17-1 and 17-2.) (Revised: 1/9/96
effective 8/1/96)
17.14.1 Length of Playing Season. The length of an institution’s playing season in ice hockey shall be limited
to a 132-day season, which may consist of two segments (each consisting of consecutive days) and which may
exclude only required off days per Bylaw 17.1.5.4 and official vacation, holiday and final examination periods during
which no practice or competition shall occur. (Revised: 1/10/91 effective 8/1/91, 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97)

17.14.2 Preseason Practice. A member institution shall not commence practice sessions in ice hockey
prior to the Saturday of the 25th full weekend prior to the first-round of the NCAA championship. (Revised:
1/10/91 effective 8/1/91, 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 11/1/01 effective 8/1/04)

17.14.3 First Contest. A member institution shall not play its first contest (game or scrimmage) with outside
competition in ice hockey prior to September 7 or the institution’s first day of classes for the fall term,
whichever is earlier. (Revised: 1/10/95 effective 8/1/95)
17.14.4 End of Regular Playing Season. A member institution shall conclude all practice and competition
(games and scrimmages) in each segment in ice hockey by the last day of final examinations for the regular
academic year at the institution. (Revised: 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97

These are from the by-laws. Its only reference is to when official on-ice practices start. It doesn't state that the coach cannot be anywhere near or observing an unofficial captain's practice or skate. As long as he's not conducting the practice or talking/directing it in any way, I don't see the problem.

Time constraints (I'm at work) keep me from really digging in to the by-laws, but these are the only ones I found concerning when the coaches can start and be involved in official practices.

I don't think a coach being in the building during what amounts to a pick up game constitutes a practice. Attempting to direct the game or in any way becoming involved in the process would be.

At least that's what I recall reading about the basketball rules...

Hey - I am serious.

I can understand needing time off. But if you're on the ice at practice, then you need to use that time wisely and not "dick around". Especially with the record we have.

We had the same problem on my high school team. The coach was in over his head and basically lost us as a team. We were lucky to have good leadership (me included  ) to carry on through the season and make him look good. While I think the atmosphere on the team is poisoned, it should speak volumes about the possible lack of leadership on the team that the cohesiveness is either gone or never was there to begin with. I hardly ever see any player quotes after games or in the BG News, and that kinda worries me.

If Hodgson is the captain, it's his duty, along with the assistants, to address the problems the team is having in some capacity to the public to let us know why things haven't been going well. Maybe this is Paluch's policy to keep thing in house? Or maybe this is what's leading to the "dicking around" in practice? Either way, I think this offseason will stem more than coaching changes, hopefully a proven leader will take control of this team and at least put a better product on the ice.

Maybe I'm reading between the lines, but it almost sounds like you are suggesting the players speak out against the coach. Understand there would be serious consequences for the player that dares do that. This isn't the NFL. A college coach will burry a guy if attacked.

I just hope there is a voice or two in that locker room that is keeping the guys together. I'm hoping there is someone who will remind the players that they aren't playing for Paluch necessarily, they are playing for the University, it's students, it's faculty, the great citizens of northeastern Ohio and most of all themselves.
