Re: 9,991...
Not every amount of support has to be financial. Students packing the house making the Barn a formidable venue again will go a long way in getting people excited again about Falcon hockey. Trust me when I say this: finances aren't the biggest issue right now. The money is there and the AD and Dr. Cartwright know that. We're just waiting to see what the fundraising group is going to recommend then kick in the efforts to modernize the arena.
I still preach that the best way to guarantee the team is to make it self-reliant. The Miami model is a great way to go and if we can connect with some of our NHL guys and those who have used their degrees for good use it is entirely possible.

If that statement were actually true, the bars in Bowling Green would no longer exist.
Most college students are not the poor souls they want you to believe. If most of them would learn how to budge their money - walk instead of drive their cars, got rid of their cell phones, cancelled their cable TV and Internet subscription, did not hit the bars on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nites - you would be surprised at the amount of money you had.

Wow, excellent number- 10,000.
Just "dreaming": 2000 students x $20= $40,000
3000 folks who can donate more x $50= $150,000
5000 folks who can donate still more x $100= $500,000
"dreaming" $ total for hockey from the group $690,000
Just "dreaming" II: 1500 of 2000 students attend every game by showing id= 1500 or about 30% capacity
2000 of 8000 others buy a season ticket= 2000 or about 45% capacity
"dreaming" attendance total from the group 3500 or about 75% capacity
Add in our other donors and our other game goers and we should have some dollars and sell outs all year long. I said all year long.
I realize there are some folks in that 10,000 support group who can't/won't give $20 and many who can give a lot more than $100. I realize I am just wildly guessing at the number of student members. Some members live close by and can use the ticket themselves; others live very far away and would have to give them away. Some won't buy season tickets; some will buy several.
Just doing some "dreaming".

First of all, cell phone and internet are pretty necessary for todays society...if they didnt have cell phones then they would have to pay for their own phone lines in the houses/apartments. But even though many college students may have more than me (i totally fit the "poor old college student" mold) you can't count on donations from people without a steady income. when i graduate and get a job, you better believe some money will be coming back to BG, but for right now i'm going to try to actually have a decent college experience.transfer2BGSU wrote:drumstix2388 wrote: A big majority of the people, including me, in that group are college students so i wouldn't count on recieving any donations from them. i can barely afford to mcdonalds much less giving up a hundred dollars

Re: 9,991...
so are you saying that most college kids should just shut themselves out from the outside world and become hippie-ish? that's what i'm gettin' from that. Most of us college kids work our asses off in the summer just so we don't have to do that when classes start up. As drumstix said, we don't have the funds to give back to the university yet because we have to pay that damn expensive bill at the beginning of the semester, pay rent, pay bills, buy food, or buy gas. There are many of us though that once we graduate and get a "real" job we will start giving back to the university that so many of us love.transfer2BGSU wrote:drumstix2388 wrote: A big majority of the people, including me, in that group are college students so i wouldn't count on recieving any donations from them. i can barely afford to mcdonalds much less giving up a hundred dollars

I realize that many of the supporters are students and others who are not in a position to contribute at the present time. The key is not to forget Falcon hockey when you are in that position. We've contributed though hockey designations via the Falcon Club, and have been awaiting the announcement of a defined ice arena/ice hockey development program to decide our next move. My wife and I are retired teachers, so there won't be any naming rights unless they decide to endorse toilet seats or something. The key, however, is contributing consistantly, if not enormously.

+1. This was pretty much what I was going to say. I give loads and loads of time to BG Hockey, distributing fliers, getting residence hall residents to games, advertising, etc, and I use the tiny amount of money I have left over from desk shifts during 18 credit hour weeks to donate $10 a month to a cat shelter and use the rest for stuff like shampoo and going out every so often. Like those before me, once I get a steady job and know I can afford to set money aside while having face soap paid for, I'll definitely be giving money back to hockey because that was an enormous part of my life. Right now I can donate a tiny bit of money, but mostly my time. Which is what I've been doing. Those who know me from here, I know I donate a lot of that for the sake of Falcon Hockey

Just kidding. Giving time when you're unable to give money is valuable, too. It just seems at this time with the hockey situation, it's coming down to hard dollar figures.
Speaking of money, a thought I just had... is the money from Falcon Club 50/50 tickets sport-specific? Does the take from selling tickets at hockey games go to the hockey team, or to a more general fund?

Re: 9,991...
That donation goal is great and would be wonderful if BG could pull it off! The focus right now though should be on ticket sales. That's the bread and butter of college hockey financing. My hope is that the Toledo game will help boost revenue and that the renovations to the ice arena will make it a more enjoyable experience that people will want to A) come back to and B) share with their friends!

THANK YOU!! I hate the excuse, 'im a college student and im poor'. Im in college and i would gladly give $100 to the hockey program. I mean $100 is NOT that much.

I totally agree (and willing to donate some $ to back it up). We dodged a huge bullet with the proposal to update Anderson which would have been a total disaster. I dont think a new barn is going to happen but we can only hope.BourbonFalcon wrote:Renovations simply maintain the status quo. We need to build a new arena and commit to elevating this program!

Re: 9,991...
While having a new barn would be impressive, as I have said before, it simply isn't going to happen, especially not in this economy right now! Jack Vivian has looked at this issue VERY thoroughly and when he tells us it isn't going to happen, then believe me, it isn't. But, Jack has a VERY good, VERY viable plan for some impressive upgrades and renovations of the current arena. He has the trust of Dr. Cartwright and the alumni players, who will be key in making this happen; so that the program can become self-sustaining and the arena can be profitable on a continuing basis.Father Brown wrote:I totally agree (and willing to donate some $ to back it up).
