Re: Penn State Expected to Make Big Announcement Friday
I'm trying to make the numbers work. If they go to a six-team Big 10, assuming a round-robin home-and-home, that makes 20 games. They'll still each need to schedule about 16 more games, so at minimum that's eight teams from out-of conference.
With an eight team CCHA and ten team WCHA, most of those games would come from there. With our proximity to three big 10 schools, I'd think that would work out to some home-and-homes.
I think it's way too early to panic.

Re: Penn State Expected to Make Big Announcement Friday
I'll be interested in seeing how a Big Ten hockey conference does when it comes to scheduling, with only 6 teams I assume each team would play at least 20 conferences games, playing one home and one away series with each team in the conference.
I'll also be interested in seeing if the six hockey playing schools reach out to the six non-hockey schools about starting programs, or moving their program up if they already have one

BGFALCONFROMCINCY? One of the people touring Oxford was my brother-in-law. I wasn't at liberty to disclose any information nor did I want to mention anything at that time but you are 100 percent correct. PSU will be going into the newly formed B10 conference beginning in 2013-14 season. However, according to my brother-in-law PSU is trying to find a temp home so they can begin playing D1 hockey as early as 2011-12 season.
Also, the B10, is also trying to convince Notre Dame to join the B10 in all sports. As you may remember the B10 said no new teams would be added to its conference after it added Nebraska but is planning on asking Notre Dame again in 2013. If Notre Dame commits to the B10 you will then see Boston College switch to the B10, creating a 14 team league in football and basketball and an eight team league for hockey. I do have more information but I am going to wait until after PSU makes its announcement.

Re: Penn State Expected to Make Big Announcement Friday
I really don't see a B10 conference generating a great deal more interest in college hockey. It will, however, give B10 teams greater exposure and some additional revenue through the B10 network. The CCHA will survive and even flourish with the remaining teams with perhaps Huntsville and some additions to be named later. I see a lot of inter-league play between the CCHA and a B10, especially due to short travel distances and already established rivalries. What will be, will be. The CCHA has morphed before (yes, I remember playing the Billikins) and it will be fine as long as we keep our eyes on the prize.

that fits with what I got from a friend that ND has reached a decision to join the B10 in football and basketball in 2013 as well...so it is no stretch that would also do hockey, and that another football program has likely said yes or will soon.
a B10 hockey conference only "hurts" because that takes away an at large bid for the NCAA's, and that doesnt hurt anyone, but continues to ensure that conference champions get what they have earned, a fair shot.
Re: Penn State Expected to Make Big Announcement Friday
But CHA's autobid has gone back into the at-large pool this year so it's not really much of a change.MACMAN wrote: a B10 hockey conference only "hurts" because that takes away an at large bid for the NCAA's, and that doesnt hurt anyone, but continues to ensure that conference champions get what they have earned, a fair shot.

Get ready for a new era of BGSU Hockey starting this season. And it looks like a new era of college hockey.

Penn State is expected to announce Friday its intentions to form an NCAA Division I men's and women's ice hockey program, College Hockey News has confirmed.
That could mean, of course, playing in the CCHA, which has three other Big Ten schools already in it — Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State. And the CCHA has an "opening," after losing Nebraska-Omaha this year.
Another question is personnel. It seems likely that current club coach Scott Balboni will not be retained. It also seems likely that Penn State will go after a big name to start its program.

Now...how can we get someone to donate 88 million dollars to the Falcon Hockey program!!!! If I win the lottery...

Re: Penn State Expected to Make Big Announcement Friday
WEll from what he said it was a very spiritual decision for him...
good news is, the programs are endowed and will have no financial drain on the school what so ever...so those who would say why so much for sports when its a school...thought it was neat for him when Crosby told him he was doing a great thing for hockey, I think Crosby is right, Penn is ideally situated for hockey fans in that state, and I would not doubt that in the inaugural season of the rink, the pens and flyers will play a game there.
I will also garuntee it will be a hostl...fun environment for visiting teams, sure hope they go for the 6-7k size over 5k, they will fill 5k far to easy.

Re: Penn State Expected to Make Big Announcement Friday
I concure Drew, however the CCHA has yet to announce UAH joining the conference, I was some what anticpating that would come yesterday as well. Furthermore the CCHA has three teams in financial trouble, two in worse shape than BGSU was two years ago. As news of this trouble grows in frequency coupled with those schools having other issues as well, my personal feeling is some thing will come out this season or next and they will have to follow a similar path
