Now to be fair the Stroh opening game was orginally scheduled for Saturday night after the hockey game (hence why hockey is scheduled at 4pm that day), but it had to be moved because the men's basketball team is playing in a tournament at Georgia with the game scheduled for Sunday the 13th, and they obviously couldn't play Saturday night in BG then go straight to Georgia to play the following night.pdt1081 wrote:There is, however, an advertisement for the opening of the Stroh against Howard on Friday, November 11th, at 7PM. Why in the hell would you schedule a home hockey game up against the opening of a brand new basketball facility? Seriously, it's like there's one central department scheduling stuff. To me it seems like someone wrote a book entitled "How to Repeatedly Kill the Attendance at Hockey Games." Home games on Fall Break weekend, away games on Homecoming, and a home game pitted against a grand opening.

Probably not the best choice of words by me, but its the best I could come up with for the situation since it wasn't originally scheduled this way

Re: Marketing Strategy
For the record I loved every time I went to a hockey game in college even though I did not know what was going on. The entire idea of getting a big group of people to do the same champs in a small area where you can bang on the glass is awesome. Not sure if I even went 5 times but it was fun. If they ever got really good, Hockey lends itself to a sport where you can really get into even if you don't love the sport.
I know I would have went a ton more. Would not go now living in Cbus but might head all the way up for a football or bball game and combine it with Hockey.

Re: Marketing Strategy
According to what I have seen on Facebook, if you wear a jersey to Friday night's game you can purchase a ticket for half price. Saturday is "Ladies Night." I don't seem to be able to find this information anywhere else. If these promotions are actually true, why aren't they promoted?

I've never posted on this site previously although I am a frequent reader. I felt a need to respond to this quote since it refers to me personally. I won't hide behind my username. I just wanted to say that my family makes every effort possible to support BGSU and BGSU Athletics. We go to as many games as we possibly can in as many sports as we possibly can. I make it to 5 or 6 hockey games a year (no, it wasn't "the kids first falcon hockey game"). We didn't "quickly leave after dropping the cloth" either, we stayed for the whole game but that isn't really the point either.unfalconbelievable wrote:I'll tend to bet that the new skate shop named for the Newlove's Donation - won't be at another game for years to come. Might of been his kids first falcon hockey game. They quickly left after the dropping of the cloth as well. Many do- and obviously many people whose names were on those signs absolutely do not come.
We made the gift for the pro shop in an effort to support the hockey program, the University, and the community - hopefully it will help.
I'll be there tonight, you apparently know who I am so please stop by and say hello and introduce yourself.
Thanks, Andy Newlove.
Go BG!

It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Current student here.
Back when I was living on campus (2 years ago), if you weren't already following BG hockey closely or affiliated with the A-band then getting to the hockey game was more through word-of-mouth. Or at least, that was my experience.
People are definitely excited to go to hockey games, I just don't think enough people are aware of the games as often as they should be. I didn't know much about hockey when watching my first BG game (and in my last year of college, I still don't really know much). What I DO know is that it is a heck of a lot of fun to watch. I wouldn't say the problem is a lack of audience pull for hockey, I'd say it's more of an awareness thing.
You don't even have to advertise it too heavily. Each dorm has their own PA system; anything as simple as just announcing that there's a game that day over the PA will do at least a little bit of a job to get students out of their beds.
I understand the focus towards football, it produces more money than hockey, so it makes sense they'd want to advertise it more.
As far as non-student audience members? Signs and such wouldn't hurt. I'd agree at least a bit more advertising would help.

Mr. Newlove, I want to publically appologize for casting judgement on a situation that I'm not fully aware of and that is my fault and I'm accountable for that. This message board was not set-up for people to cast judgement and cause ill will onto others. I firmly support Falcon athletics and have for years. I wish you and your family the best and much success in you local business. I thank you for your generous donation to the hockey progam and your continued support of falcon athletics. Once again sorry for the premature judgement and wishing you continued success in your endeavors.

Re: Marketing Strategy
Put all three winter sports calendars together .....it's a bad dream.
Can you say CCHA and MAC not talking to each other.
Hockey schedule out before both basketballs.
Howard game on same night as hockey & season opener for women @ Dayton.
Men's game changed so guy can play in Georgia on TV Sunday.
There are several other conflicts where two games are at the same time.
Several have been changed but the days with 2 or 3 games get pretty long.
Season tickets to all 3 are $$$$$$$ & needing to pick & choose is tough.
Wish there was a scheduling head to check this all out and make the switches necessary.
THANKS Newloves for your love of Falcon Athletics, the University and the community!
