Come back the next day????? Seriously???? You would want both teams and all its fans to spend hundreds of dollars on hotel and meal expenses only to come back the next day for an 8th overtime that would probably end after 2 minutes on a fluke goal. Worst decision ever. Playing organized hockey for 15 years, I have no problems calling the game. No shootout either. Don't end the game with something 16 year olds are not familiar with. Now after 3 overtimes maybe 4-4 or 3-3 hockey. You will get a goal sooner than later.

They should have gone to 4 on 4 on switch sides, like they do in the second period. That would have caused for more mistakes and probably a game winner.

No problem with the decision to declare this one a tie.

Next year - they'll revise the rules and you will see 4-4 (maybe even 3-3) written into the rules.

OHSAA got this one right.

The right call was made. Northview was only rolling two lines at the end of the game because so many players were physically exhausted. On top of that, the quality of the game was really starting to suffer. Both teams played a hell of a game and there's no shame in declaring that both schools can split the championship. They've got something to remember the rest of their lives and it made national headlines.

Heard that players were cramping up badly. One of the moms of one of the players was a doctor and she was called into the locker room. So, this was the right decision for all of the kids.

So...
Congratulations Northview players and Falcon alum, Coach Mike Jones on your State Championship!!!!

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

This actually wasn't the longest game in OHSAA history, as previously someone mentioned what if this wasn't a state final. Aurora and Euclid, I believe in 2007 went 8 OTs in a district semi. If it's not a state final you would have to finish the game in enable the tournament to progress.

Actually the Mom who went into the locker room did not go in to treat the players. She actually went in to get money from the coach and then went to the concession stands to buy gatorade for the players. Just another story these kids can pass on years from now.

FWIW, I don't think shoot-outs will happen next year. The rules the OHSAA follows are the National Federation of High Schools rules - this is true for almost all, if not all sports. That rule change would have to be a national one and I don't see that happening. IMO, a 4-on-4 would be better, but again, it would have to be a national rule change.

At the end of each volleyball and basketball season, all officials and coaches get a survey to fill out on potential rule changes. I know that in each of the last three basketball seasons they've asked whether a shot clock should be added (I've said no every year).

I'm sure hockey does as well. I would guess that shoot-outs could easily be a question in the hockey survey. In a way, a lot of it depends on how coaches, officials, assigners, and ADs respond.

Just my $.02.

Fwiw, A couple of yrs ago my son's lacrosse team was leading the state championship game by FIVE goals with about 3 min. Left to play. A violent storm came up which lasted several hours til near mid nite . The decision SHOULD have been easy but the commissioner said the game would need to be completed. So Hudson and their opponent drove back home (approx. 2+hrs for us) to play that last 3 min. To boot, the host school for the game did not have field availability the next day and they had to find another school to host for 3 min.
Can't blame OHSAA for that one as they've refused to sponsor LAX at least so far. But it was by far the dumbest thing I'd seen in HS sports. :axe:
