Every time I see him come out of the net to handle the puck I just want to die. My perspective on this is purely that of a fan (I never played the game)...but the tendency for goalies to handle the puck behind the net has been increasing for years. Coaches and goalies MUST see it as a positive, or they'd stop it.

Yup, me too. I want to bungie cord him to the front of the net sometimes!
"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

I'm almost as much concerned that we never try for that odd bounce off the boards when on offense. The small door by the Zamboni doors for example. 2nd period we always try to bring it in the other side, never trying to take advantage of a known odd bounce.

I've often wondered why we don't try that as well. We've been burned by that rough seam several times in the past couple of years.

When I first started following this game 40+ years ago, you NEVER saw the goalie going back there....it was like some hard, fast absolute and nobody questioned it.

Now, I know the game changes, coaching patterns and ideas are always evolving...it like that in any sport or business. I've GOT to assume that there are some 'metrics' that we casual fans aren't familiar with. I don't know how you'd measure the number of times going back there to stop that dump-around might SAVE a goal...we only notice when it explodes in our face.

In this case, Tommy just was not aware of his surroundings. He calmly left that puck right there, obviously thinking Ralfs was going to get there ahead of their forward.

He was probably distracted by the overwhelming buzz of that huge crowd:(

Bergeron pretty much blamed it on a lack of communication between Ralfs and the goalie but he didn't really mention which one was at fault. If that's the case I guess it would have to be Ralfs since he had to know that he was behind the play.

Ralfs had a tough day. He dropped coverage on their first goal as well:(

I used to think Ralfs was rock-solid, but I've noticed mistakes in the second half of the season.

When I was new to hockey, I was scared to death every time our goalie left the net. Sigalet was excellent playing the puck. Hammond was not.

With regard to my description of our Falcons' performance against MSU as pathetic: After watching MSU manhandle FSU, I see that we were beaten by a very good team.

I mentioned it in January that Ralfs wasn't himself on the ice. Figured it had something to do with what they had him doing to prepare for the Olympics.
