Let's give Bergeron his annual contract extension/raise and pray that next season the team can actually win something. Maybe Atlantic Hockey will let us join next year and keep 19 scholarships. We'd have a solid shot then I bet.

In all seriousness...hopefully Nell doesn't leave for a free agent deal, that would be a tough loss.
I think if Nell gets a decent offer, he is going to take it. I am also worried about Walker. Hoping that no one leaves weeks before next season.

Nell owes a lot to the team in front of him. He very well may not be the number 1 next season. He's a big guy that covers a lot of the net, but he's not going to steal you a game. Goaltending was by far the weakest position this season, even with 4 freshman defensemen dressing most nights.

I'm most worried about Walker and Friedman. Dufour may get some attention, but this isn't a team of "stars." There's a lot of talent, but there isn't really anybody at forward that stands out more than the others.

The lack of scoring was clearly the problem this year....Nell definitely had a handful of below avg games, but he clearly won the team multiple games. It is a fair question to ask how good he would be against teams who consistently score goals. We didn't play many of those teams, so it's tough to evaluate.

Nell was not the weakest position this season, by far or by near.
Hope he stays for at least another year, but the cupboard won't be bare with Bednard coming in.

I didn't say Nell was the weakest link. I said goaltending was the weakest position. It was a one man show with very little competition. Sholl has been listed as the backup since the Clarkson series, and he didn't play a minute this season. That doesn't push your number one goaltender to improve his game. Or allow him to relax knowing someone is capable of covering for him if need be.

Pretty much every forward can and did see time on the number one line. Balanced scoring shows how solid it is. Defense didn't change much from the beginning of the season. The team finished the season in the top 10 nationally in GAA. Any defenseman could be put in just about any situation and the team would be fine. Goaltending was Nell or nobody. That's a terrible spot for any player to be in, physically and mentally.

The goaltending position was just fine. Nell played every game since his injury because for the most part he was the best player on the team. Coach has said as much.
There was plenty of blame to go 'round for this team coming up short--underperforming offense, glaring turnovers with odd-man rushes, and too many shorthanded goals.
Most frustrating was that time after time, the team didn't show up and start playing until after getting punched. Great on Saturdays and in third periods, not so good on Fridays and first periods...

You mean goaltending had the least depth, right? Because Nell appeared in 85% of the game action this year, had four shutouts (a new BG single season record), a .930 SV%, and 1.91 GAA.

Our biggest let down this year was our lack of scoring. PERIOD. Nell (or any goaltender) can only do so much and he DID in fact, steal a few games for us.
"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

I seriously doubt that Nell, or any of the others for that matter, leave after this year. Friedman still has some maturing to do and still makes some dumb mistakes that lead to turnovers. His overconfidence is his problem. This has been a breakout year for Walker but is really the first year that he's gained the recognition he deserves, and the same goes for Nell. At least another year for all three would be a good thing for them and the program.

For goal tending next year, we will have Nell, Sholl, and a third goalie that is NOT on scholarship, which is the norm. For the last several years we've had 3 goalies on scholarship which is highly unusual.

As for this past year, our biggest issue has not been goal tending, it has been the inability to score consistently when we needed to as well as mental breakdowns. Last night's game was very, very even except for a 2 minute lapse in the first period. Other than that, it was difficult to tell any difference between the two teams on the ice. Once we get past those mental lapses, we will be fine. We are close...very, very close.

hmm...that would make sense scholarship-wise. wait another year to bring in Bednard, who would then be 20 with three years of juniors. for next season that would mean Nell, Sholl, and unnamed non-scholarship guy.
if Nell left before next season, bring in both Bednard and unnamed non-scholarship guy. (?)
but if Nell left after next season, it gets thin with that plan: we'd have Bednard as a freshman, unnamed non-scholarship guy as a soph, and another freshman. (???)
just thinking out loud.

According to Chris Heisenberg, Bednard won't be here until 2017.

Eliteprospects.com shows Bednard coming this fall. With the risk of losing Nell early, I'd rather see him come sooner and get in a dozen games in as a second stringer then take over as a sophomore if Nell does go pro.
I love people who can laugh at themselves. It saves me the effort.

He played in tonight's game. Had a few shots and drew two penalties. Was on a line with Mingo, and always seemed to be out when Ralfs was on D. Fun to watch.
