Again thats all great, and its cool that we can actually have a chance at a national championship and whatnot, but that doesnt mean much to the majority of students of BG who don't know or don't care when football is king now and the the only hockey national chamionship we have in hockey was back in the day when most of our students where just being born. You guys have been sucking off that one national championship for 20 years thinking that is what makes us well known, well maybe it did at one time , but not anymore unless the hockey team does start to go back the playoffs again and starts winning there too. We havent done anything yet in hockey in for a long time, but I feel our time is coming soon here for hockey. If we keep getting top 15 recruiting classes , the tide should soon turn for us eventually. You guys gotta learn to be paitient like us football guys had to all the horrid mid 90's-2000. I'm just saying that not having these schedule cards out for hockey does not surprise me too much considering these facts.McConvey wrote:And what YOU don't understand is that hockey is the ONLY sport that has brought a national championship to Bowling Green.falconboy wrote: Now this may make your blood boil a little , but its true, the marketing dept. will get those cards out sooner when Hockey starts doing what football and the ladies basketball is doing haveing success. Don't get me wrong , I'm actually expecting a little bit more this year from bg hockey, but nonetheless flame away as you will. :-\
Not football, not hoop (men's or women's) but hockey.
Who on the football team has ever won the Heisman? Nobody.
Yet the hockey team has had two Hobey Baker winners, and several finalists, including Jordan Sigalet last season!
Who has the football or basketball team ever produced that went on to have sucessful professional careers? And by successful, I don't mean a thrid string defensive end or the 10th guy on the bench.
Our hockey team can boast one of only two players ever to win an Olympic Gold Medal and a Stanley Cup Championship in the same year (Ken Morrow - 1980, and yes, that's the team that was portrayed in Miracle), a Norris Trophy winner (Rob Blake) and a bunch of dudes who had long NHL careers long = 10 years or more).
Believe me when I tell you that the only people outside of the Midwest who have heard of Bowling Green have heard of it because of its hockey program, NOT because of football or basketball.
The new marketing guy bites it... this isn't the first thing he's screwed up and it won't be the last.

The hockey team will get there a lot faster with the stands full. Hockey teams, especialy BG's, feed off of the crowd. Even in the years when there were very few wins, big crowds produced good games. BG used to be one of the most feared buildings to play in. Why? Noise and the team. We're getting the team back, now we need to get the noise back. The BG Ice Arena has all the right components of the best college hockey atmosphere: Low ceiling to reflect the noise, large stands for the size of the building, seats close to the ice and players....falconboy wrote: Now this may make your blood boil a little , but its true, the marketing dept. will get those cards out sooner when Hockey starts doing what football and the ladies basketball is doing haveing success. A big push by the marketing department to get the stands full two or three times at the beginning of the season is all they need to do. A couple big crowds to start the year off and the team will take care of getting the people to come back.
Most people only hear about the hockey team by reading about them in the paper. Once people hear how good they are doing, a few more come to games. Others would, if they knew the upcoming schedule. Some people don't read the paper (at least the Sentinel) so they don't hear anything about the team. That's bad marketing. Read the Toledo Blade. BG Football and Basketball usually get two or three good long articles a WEEK. Hockey gets a bigger headline when they lose than they do when they win, if they even get mentioned at all. A good marketing department would write an article and submit it to the Blade so they don't have to do it.

Your only argument seems to be that the national championship was 20 years ago and that the hockey team has done nothing recently.
The team made it to the CCHA semi-finals in 2000-01. True, it's not a CCHA championship, but it's not the 'haven't made the playoffs since 1984' that you appear to be claiming.
Jordan Sigalet was a Hobey Baker finalist last season, 2004-05. I'm pretty sure most BGSU freshmen were born by last year.
When BGSU takes the ice this season, they'll be playing against some of the best teams in the country, including Michigan and Boston College (who spent a large part of last season ranked #1). Will they win these games? I don't know, but I can tell you right that there's a good chance they will. If the football or basketball teams were to play the equivalent, I guarantee they would not win.
Again, read my post in between this one and the one you quoted. I am not saying football shouldn't get the majority of the marketing attention. But the hockey team shouldn't get the shaft, either.

Well to answer one of your questions on what baskeball player has had success , ask Antonio Daniels , he won a championship with the Spurs back iin '99. So there's one.McConvey wrote:You addressed none of my points.falconboy wrote:Again thats all great, and its cool that we can actually have a chance at a national championship and whatnot, but that doesnt mean much to the majority of students of BG who don't know or don't care when football is king now and the the only hockey national chamionship we have in hockey was back in the day when most of our students where just being born. Averaging 13 minutes a game and playing only about half of the team's games is not exactly the superstar I was shooting for, but I'll give you that one. That puts him about on par with Greg De Vries from hockey, who won a Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2000-01.falconboy wrote:Well to answer one of your questions on what baskeball player has had success , ask Antonio Daniels , he won a championship with the Spurs back iin '99. I can probably name 5-10 off the top of my head that have had more success in the NHL than AD has had in the NBA, and I'm not a hardcore hockey fan. You're fighting a losing battle falconboy. If both sports are at their peak BG is way more into hockey than basketball. I remember heading to basketball game with my aunt/uncle when the place was PACKED, standing room only.falconboy wrote: Well to answer one of your questions on what baskeball player has had success , ask Antonio Daniels , he won a championship with the Spurs back iin '99. As BGFan indicated, hockey is already outdrawing hoops.

Take a guess at how many former BG hockey players names reside on the Stanley Cup....
FYI...it also hasn't been since the 80's that BG has had national success. No, they haven't been in the NCAA playoffs since the end of the '80s but we finished second in the CCHA in '95 - '96 and had the Hobey Baker award winner that year.
If you'd make it outside the state of Ohio and into cities such as Boston, Milwaukee, Omaha, Denver, or any other city that has a college team or anywhere in Canada, for that matter (regardless of DI, DII, or DIII) and you wear your BG clothing you'll run into people who have not only heard of BG but actually know where it is. Yes, even now. Trust me, it's happened to me on several occasions and continues to happen. Like it or not, BG is known nationally for its hockey more than for football or basketball. FWIW, the marketing department should leverage that fact and market the program better.

Speaking of the lights, they've finished putting in the new lighting in the arena! It's an unbelievable difference. They used high intensity flourescent lights interspaced with the old ones. Apperently they need a certain number of the old ones left there because the ballasts they use somehow controls the humidity between the ceiling and the roof (don't ask me how). They removed sections of the old ones and replace them with the new ones. The ice actually looks white now! Should help tremendously for those who like to take photos.hammb wrote:I was gonna go with, "Because they might get hid in the head with a light," but your answer's good toopdt1081 wrote: BG used to be one of the most feared buildings to play in. Seriously, the Ice Arena is a fun place, and can rock when they get a good crowd in there.

"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

I got just a very quick peek two weeks ago and from what little I could see, they looked fabulous. I don't even know if all the lights were on, but I could tell the difference.BGFan wrote: Speaking of the lights, they've finished putting in the new lighting in the arena! I wanted to steal one of those signs they have marking the sections now!

Something else to point out, the season starts in 6 days and the online ticket office has not posted any tickets. There's a link to it, but none of the events listed.
