Ya. And the Blue Jackets are in the NHL's Western Conference, albeit in the easternmost (I think) city.bgsufalcon24 wrote:Never mind my previous post, its just hard to think of Ohio as being a western state. I guess if you're from Boston or NY or someplace like that it kinda is.

I think that was more of a logistical thing than anything else.BG84 wrote:Ya. And the Blue Jackets are in the NHL's Western Conference, albeit in the easternmost (I think) city.
The four expansion teams were Minnesota, Columbus, Nashville and Atlanta. Columbus had to go somewhere and they didn't really realign any other of the existing teams at that time (or at least I don't think they did, I can't specifically recall).

I've seen Michigan play a few times this season, and outside of their top line they aren't much to write home about. Sauer is beatable in goal, and if we can out work them to loose pucks and win the board play, I have a good feeling about this weekend. It's great to have the hockey team back and more importantly have the students rejuvenated about the program.

A PP goal from Sexton and a goal from Solway 4 seconds after a BG PP ended has the Falcons up 2-1 late in the second!
ROLL ALONG!

Well that was certainly unpleasant. UM ties it at 2, I duck out to do some work, come back and they score two in the last 1:30 to take it 4-2.
That's it, I'm never working again!
As far as the game, it seems like we may have deserved this one, but couldn't close 'em out. Three UM goals in the last 5 minutes. BG had a strong 2nd period to take the lead, and shots for the game were even, but the Falcons were 1-6 on the PP (though held UM to 0-for-3) you've gotta think those PP opps. will be flipped tomorrow at Yost.
Shake it off and get the split!

Eh, it wasn't illogical, really.McConvey wrote:I think that was more of a logistical thing than anything else.BG84 wrote:Ya. And the Blue Jackets are in the NHL's Western Conference, albeit in the easternmost (I think) city.

The Detroit Red Wings have been in the NHL's west for a long time.
When I was growing up, there were four divisions:
Adams: Boston, Hartford, Buffalo, Montreal, Quebec
Patrick: Islanders, Rangers, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Washington
Norris: Toronto, Detroit, Chicago, Minnesota, St. Louis
Smythe: Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Los Angeles
The latter two divisions were in the western conference, known as the Prince of Wales Conference. And while it seems strange to think of Detroit and Toronto as "western," if you looked at the league, it made sense.
That Norris Division was neat. And if you look at the current alignment, the NHL's Central makes some sense and belongs in the Western Conference.
(Even if it isn't as cool for a Red Wings fan. Detroit used to play Toronto all the time. Now they play Toronto once a year, or so, and get stuck playing a Nashville team with an utterly ridiculous nickname eight or times a year. Ick. There was talk in the off season that Nashville would bought and moved to Hamilton. The world would be a better place if that had happened).
Anyway, the history geek in me feels obligated to point out that, for much of its history, Ohio was very much the West. If you go all the way back, this was the Northwest Territory.
The Big Ten was officially the "Western Conference" for, like, ever. Michigan's fight song has the line about "champions of the West," and this is very much how people thought about it back then. The schools in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, etc., were very much western schools a century ago.
The way college hockey is set up right now -- where the major powers are located -- resembles the way college football looked a century ago. In college hockey, we are very much in the west.
The history geek in me would like to point out that the western conference was known as the Campbell Conference, the east was the Wales.Schadenfreude wrote:The latter two divisions were in the western conference, known as the Prince of Wales Conference.
But the rest of the post is good stuff, though.

Anyway, I loved when Chris Berman used to call the NFC Central the "NFC Norris." It resonated with me.
