Condensed history of the CCHA

Post by Freddie »

71/72 4 teams: BG, Ohio U, Ohio State and St Louis
72/73 Expanded to 5 teams with addition of Lake Superior
73/74 Back to 4 teams OU and OSU both left, Western Michigan joined
75/76 OSU came back, bringing league back to 5
77/78 Expanded to 6 teams with addition of Northern Michigan
78/79 Expanded to 7 teams with addition of Ferris State
79/80 Reduced to 6 teams as St Louis dropped hockey
80/81 Back to 7 teams with the addition of Miami
81/82 I guess you could say this was the 'watershed' year as Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame and Michigan Tech all jumped from the WCHA. Illinois-Chicago also joined this year bringing CCHA up to 12 teams.
83/84 Notre Dame dropped their hockey program, CCHA now has 11
84/85 Northern Mich and Mich Tech move to WCHA, CCHA back to 9 and it stayed that way for 7 seasons
91/92 Expanded to 11 with addition of Kent State & return of Notre Dame
94/95 Reduced to 10 teams when Kent State drops hockey
95/96 Expanded back to 11 with addition of Alaska-Fairbanks
96/97 Dropped back to 10 when Illinois-Chicago drops hockey
97/98 Expanded back to 11 with Northern Michigan's return from WCHA
99/00 Expanded to present 12 with addition of Nebraska-Omaha

After Section A sang the "M-I-C-K-E-Y MOUSE, why because we swept you" song, they then sang the Notre Dame fight song. Very cool. Just a little bit more CCHA/BG history from an "oldtimer" :D
I just read that in the media guide not too long ago. I really really wish I'd been around for stuff like that.

It was a fine mix of obnoxious and classy. Very few swear words thrown around, wittiness, and fun. Hopefully we can get that back (not to mention our own, unique cheers instead of modified, borrowed ones). A few consecutive winning seasons is all it will take.

Don't tell me you're too young to know the "M-I-C-K-E-Y MOUSE" song??? I mean I'm not as old as BGFan (or his wife) and *I* know about it...

In a nutshell, on the old Mickey Mouse Club show (or whatever it was called) the Mousketeers would sing: "M-I-C...See you real soon! K-E-Y...Why? Because we love you!"

...or something to that effect. The BG fans just tweaked it to fit the situation... that would be a fun one to bring back. Except, you know, for you meddling kids... :-D

I remember talking with Mark Zimmerman (FF 77-78) about some of the classic chants and things of that nature and he told me something to the effect of "There were three rules - be clever, no swearing and no mamas."

I wish the people that started our chants went by that. I would if I started the chants..unfortunately, owing to the fact that I can't scream that loud and I'm right smack dab in front of the glass...yeah, that's not happening. Terry, think up something amazing for the playoffs :)

This wasn't all that popular, but when the MSU fans chanted "Go Green Go White", we reminded their ag students: "Grow Grain! Grow Rice!"

Not relevant anymore is a chant that ended with "Weiss on ice". Someone here probably has the background on that one.

Growing up watching and playing hockey my whole life, I can honestly say the best chirrping is swearing at guys. A lot of these old 2A chants are lame. I personally am not a fan of chants nor bands at hockey games. Orchestrated chants are usually dull and boring. Chirpping actually gets into the players mind. Trust me I would always get pissed when I heard my name then is a(n) fill in your derogative comment. The its all your fault, and the synchronized cheers never get you off your game. You hear it and just think to yourself...wow are we now at a cheerleading convention or a HOCKEY GAME!
Dave Ellett is a hero. A Bowling Green Falcon and a Former Jet and Maple Leaf. What more can a Winnipegger ask for.

There's no question that the student's chanting/chirping got under Cody Chupp's skin last Saturday night.

A good portion of York's success at BG was the contribution of Buddy Power's chirping at the refs. It was non-stop.

Kevin Schmidt
is on the ballot just a few lines up from Wit

I am bumbed that i will not be at the final game for those Sr.s in the REGULAR SEASON!!! I will be at the Northview vs st francisis game at Tamo if superstition's hold true for me, we should win that night over MI because every time I chose Northview over a Falcon game the Falcons won, while kept tuned in on the radio.

Im looking forward to a good a long post season, and some good post season shocks for the CCHA, as surely int he end some team from the CCHA will again hold the NCAA title this year.
