Age Differences

Post by BGSU Crazy Fan 58 »

Wow this topic has gotten crazy. There is a generation gap between students and those that have been going to games for a long time. There's differences between age groups that probably will never be resolved. Students go to these game to get rowdy, have fun, and try give the rink a crazy atmosphere. Having the student section all the way towards the end does not give me the best view of the game but I stand in there because it's so much fun and I have the freedom to start cheers and yell at the opponents and have a good time. Kids are like this all over the country. You think the student sections at Yost, Munn, BC, Minnesota, etc. don't stand the whole game? Kids will be kids, that's the way it is.

I've been to games at ALL the places you've named, and about thirty other college hockey venues, and I can state categorically that standing throughout the game is the EXCEPTION, not the rule. Yost and Munn don't have 'student' sections...students are scattered throughout the building. At Minny and BC the student sections are in the end zones, where they can stand without disrupting the sight lines from the 'prime/$$$' seats on the sides. All of the students at Ferris stand in the end zone, and they're the rowdyest zoo you've ever seen...all visiting players HATE to play there. Most of the students at NMU, LSSU and WMU are in the endzone, and at Notre Dame they have one whole side to themselves (temporary bleachers). I've only been to UNO once since they built their new arena, and can't really say where their student section is/was...it didn't make much of an impression on me...at I've been to every game BG has ever played at Value City Arena, and if there's a student section there, I've got no idea where it is...ABSOLUTE ZERO atmosphere. Miami is the exception...it'a all general admission (except for about 200 seats at center ice). The students stand (or better yet walk around throughout the game)...mostly preppy babes trolling. The walkways are at the bottom of the seating bowl, between the glass and the first row of seats. I'm sure it's fun for the students, assuming they came to watch the sorority parade, but it's a HORRIBLE place to try and watch a hockey game. Have not had the chance to visit Fairbanks, but if you'd all like to chip in to cover my travel expenses, I'd be happy to make a report.

Seriously, guys...if you took over the north end zone and made it the type of zoo like they have at Ferris, you could stand, jump up and down, dance, do the elephant walk, or whatever you want, and us old fogey's would love it. I'll bet if you ramped it up enough down there, Pooch would swap benches so you could taunt the opposong goalie for 2/3 of the game.

Once he was being escorted he said a group of....to put it nicely....elderly citizens stood up and started applauding.

Needless to say, that student and his friends (around 6 at the game) are telling everyone they know not to go to the game based on this one occurance.
BGDrew....I'm not writing this to piss you off but I'm curious about something. If there were people standing and applauding doesn't it stand to reason that they were doing something inappropriate at the game? They may not have been standing but they may have been yelling obscenities that caused these "elderly" people to complain. Given the applause I find it hard to believe that they were kicked out for nothing.
Actually no.. he wasn't being obscene that night. I was in the group that was standing, and took my seat when the officer came over. Yes I was annoyed, I'm not gonna lie, but oh well. He was kicked out b/c he refused to take his seat when the officer told him to. I moved down to the end where I stood the remainder of the game.
