You are 100% right about bringing kids into the student section, but I do have one thing to say about that...
I have been sitting in section F for over 20 years and we can VERY CLEARLY hear what the students are chanting over a section away. So, that's why the vulgarity needs to stop! As you are well aware, sound travels and it's been difficult to explain over the past few years to my little cousins (now ages 9, 7, 6 and 2 1/2) what the students are saying. They look up to the college kids and want to do the same things they are doing (as well as what the fans in our section are doing). I think I have the 6 year old convinced that they say "see ya...joker!" but that won't last long as he gets older. He'll still be there every weekend and even though he can't play hockey due to a medical condition, he'll hopefully be one of the biggest BG fans ever! Now, if I can just get the 2 1/2 year old to stop screaming "GO YANKEES!" LOL!
As I've said before, it's a matter of people being different as the years go on. When I was young, my parents NEVER had a fear taking me to our arena as well as each and every arena in the league, but honestly now, I would NEVER take children to certain arenas in the league and I really hope that people don't begin thinking that way about BG!

Just to clarify, because this is an important point, I am in no way saying that organized cussing is to be expected. Indeed, that is the point of this conversation. All I am saying is that when students get jacked up and into the game (which we all hope and expect them to do), your occasional "Oh sh!t!" or f-bomb is bound to slip out. That is all I'm saying. So long as it is not organzied, I don't think people are bound to hear profanities from even a section or two away. Heck, people all over the arena - student or otherwise - are bound to do that from time to time.
Just wanted to clear that up. I'm sorry for givnig the wrong impression there - I was unsuccessfully (again...) trying to be funny.

I think that's what they're saying. The chants, and obvious use of obscenities in that regard must stop, but parents bringing their kids into the student areas and complaining because of "conversational swearing" have no room to complain.

yeah, I re-read what you were saying...that's what I get for posting before thinking!
All in all, I think all of this talk is great and that I hope that however it's done, that things get back to the way the SHOULD be!
Rooting on the Falcons with all of our voices in a creative and clean way!
And so that I'm not misunderstood...I've been known to drop the occasional "vulgar" word myself during the games...as I did on Monday!
It's great to see all of this talk on the hockey board and I think only good things can come from it!

hey you and Orange are right on about this and esp about how alot has changed esp about some venues. You just can not be as trusting in an enviornment of strangers as we were when we grew up. Good bad or other wise the land scape has changed and awareness needs to be on par.
i admitedly have not been to nearly as many hockey games as i have wanted, but follow via raido. i had no idea that students have now got organzied chants that have gone beyond "bullshit" ( a favorite of mine which at the games i have been to I did not hear as Varagas perpetually controlled face offs....) i had no idea....
as for sound traveling you bet it does in the salt box...fire up the organ and cover some of it up maybe. I thought this was all about the "god dam, jessu christ what the f was he thinking....not 20 + plus people...which does lower the class of the place. one person is one thing..but jhezzz
The letter I wrote for the BG News Opinion page was printed today. Check it out if you are interested. Of course, you probably all read it on here already, but still, I'm somewhat proud.

As expected, I just recieved two messages about how much of a '***' I am because of the letter. I think they were both from the same person, judging by the constant reference to "pole polishing" and how they hope I get hit with a puck.
It's fun to antagonize the crude.

Um, sorry 'bout that. I was bored.
Some people don't get it, I guess. Hopefully you've received some positive feedback (outside of this board) as well.

lol. I guess I can let it slide then...
I actually did receive one very nice email from someone who was equally agitated by the display at the Ferris State game.
The good news is, not only am I not bothered by the insults, they actually entertain me quite a bit. This is the most fun I've had in awhile.
I just hope they don't take it upon themselves to come after me at the game. But if they do... oh well, I'll deal with that bridge when I have to cross it.

Let's take this to a truly public forum. hehehehehehehe
Oh, I certainly thought about it, especially hoping some of the Alumni would let him hear it, because he accuses me of not knowing anything about BG Hockey tradition.
I'll give you this, the full text of the e-mail and IM I received: Email title: You're a ***. Body: In regards to your letter to the editor in the BG Newspaper, if you don't like attending the BGSU Hockey games because of vulgar gestures toward the other team, stay at home. You're a big pussy. Cry me a fu**ing river and grow some fu**ing balls you fu**ing cock suck. THIS IS HOCKEY. IT'S ROUGH. THE SPORT AND THE FANS INCLUDED. I'm pretty sure you're a sophomore at BG and you would know nothing about the "tradition" during hockey games. I hope a puck flies out of the arena and smacks you in your vagina, ******.
Regards,
THE TYPICAL BGSU HOCKEY FAN
P.S. Maybe you can shine the other team's poles when they're hurt by our insults.
Instant Message: Moron: hey
Moron: your creative writing style blows my cock
Moron: I hope you catch a hockey puck in your 2 front teeth
Moron: that way you can shine those poles without it hurting
Me: well, at least you took the "creativity" part to heart.
aw.. the hell with it. his name is Matt Kelly... anyone know him?

Didn't send it via bgmail, so i don't know
Don't bother though, guys.
The last thing I want is another email from him about how I'm "a pussy ****** and can't fight for" myself or something like that.
Let's just all laugh at his lack of intelligence (and wit... and vocabulary).

He types like a Homo.
He knows nothing of BG hockey tradition.
