The refs were absolutely horrible!!!pdt1081 wrote:This game is supposedly going to be nationally televised tomorrow. Way to showcase the CCHA with an absolute farce of a game. McInchak and Stafford made an absolute joke of the entire league with their performance tonight. Our boys should be proud of the way they played. Through everything they were in it until the last buzzer went. This team has come a long, long way.
I know some people are gonna come on here and say "we can't win if we don't stay out of the box." I know it's gonna happen. Before that's even said, ask yourself if you were at the game, or just looking at the scoresheet. Because the scoresheet tells an entirely different game than that what was played on the ice. I'm scared to think about what game McInchak and Stafford were watching in their puny little brains, because it sure wasn't what everyone else in the Ice Arena was watching tonight. Congratulations guys, you F-ed up what could quite possibly have been one of the best games played in the entire league all season long.

Have you ever officiated a game of anything in your life? you sound like you'd be the best official ever...why don't you give it a shot?!

I don't have to be an official to see blatantly missed calls. This game should be turned in to the CCHA for review. It was a terribly called game!!!FlagCityFalcon wrote:Have you ever officiated a game of anything in your life? you sound like you'd be the best official ever...why don't you give it a shot?!

Total penalty minutes: UM 9/18 BG 15/46FlagCityFalcon wrote:Have you ever officiated a game of anything in your life? you sound like you'd be the best official ever...why don't you give it a shot?!
I predicted 24 powerplay minutes for UM before the game started. I wasn't far off considering they had 16. It was absolutely pathetic. Jimmy got the crap beat out of him. He took a cross check on the goal that was disallowed.
Oh, and where I stand, I have to look around the ref a lot of times to see. So the whole, "maybe he didn't see it" argument doesn't work. When stuff is happening 5 feet in front your face (as in Bailen getting drilled from behind, then cross checked on the ice in the first period) and you don't call it, it's your own incompetence, not lack of vision.

Wow. What a game today! A few thoughts...
Spratt was amazing today. It looked like he was getting it from Michigan on all sides and he played great. I am really happy he did well this weekend and I hope he continues to see time in the net for future games.
I totally agree that the officiating was terrible tonight. We would start to pressure the Michigan goal and the refs would blow the play dead. Michigan was in our net and on top of Spratt several times and the refs would not blow the whistle. To me it seemed like the officiating was very one sided.
I sat near a large section of Michigan fans and I have to say they were extremely obnoxious. They were really arrogant. I am not one to normally say anything bad about our opponent's fans but this case is an exception.
I was really proud of how hard our team played and I do feel the officials took some of the game out of our hands. I hope we can keep up the momentum for the Lake Superior series next weekend.
On a side note... did any one notice the pink shirt Paluch was wearing tonight?

Good game tonight, even if we didn't come out with the win. I do have to agree that the refs were terrible. They were quick with the whistle in Michigan's end and slow with it in our zone, not to mention some questionable penalties.
One thing that I have picked up on over the past several games is that Nick Bailen is probably our best defenseman. Ever since Maxwell left he seems to have really stepped up. He can do it all on defense; hit, pass, score goals and carry the puck.

we had close to zero scoring chances until the last 1:30 so i would have to say the refs weren't that big of a factor. credit to michigan for shutting down th opportunities of sextons line more than any other game ive seen this year.. the fact that they turned the second goal around was incredible in its own right. never happens against michigan of all teams
Despite the crappy officiating and it was awful, we did not play well tonight. Our PP was poor again, we generated little offense (again the refs did not help) and it if was not for Jimmy who was great again tonight, we would have lost more than 1-0. I know someone mentioned the issue of us "staying out of the box" but Russ S. alone took 4 or 5 of those penalties even though some of the calls did suck.
Someone mentioned the Michigan fans and I have to agree. I always enjoy chatting with opposing fans but M fans just have this attitude of superiority about them. Michigan is not that good and IMO don't deserve to be ranked #6.
We can take a lot from this weekend, a great road win, great goaltending and some solid defense. Let's hope we are on this board next Saturday night at 10pm celebrating a sweep of the Lakers

I would have to agree. We did not pose an offensive threat all night, and played too defensively. Michigan attacked the goal on every opportunity, even when we were on the power play.ziggy z wrote:we had close to zero scoring chances until the last 1:30 so i would have to say the refs weren't that big of a factor. credit to michigan for shutting down th opportunities of sextons line more than any other game ive seen this year.. the fact that they turned the second goal around was incredible in its own right. never happens against michigan of all teams
As far as Michigan's fans - yes - obnoxious. I think my father (a UM alum) agreed on that point. Don't act like you're at home in someone else's house.

Michigan fans are just bitter football fans at this point. I'm sure they got cold sweats driving through Toledo.

I don't think the officials were as bad as some are complaining about. They missed some calls and were a little quick on the whistle later in the game, but not as bad as some of the officiating crews, they did a B job.
To those people that said BG played a good game: BG played like Sh*t!.
1) Almost no scoring chance through most of the game, unlike the solid game at Yost Friday night, BG went back to the dump and chase and cycling, this severely cut into our offensive chances. They weren't quick on the loose pucks and along the boards and didn't help Spratt out as much defensively.
2) took way too many stupid penalties. Even if our PK is strong, being on the PK doesn't give the offense a chance to get going.
3) Sauer hadn't played since Thanksgiving break, and didn't get many shots in the game. Testing a cold goalie is key and BG didn't do that, the few shots he had he didn't look all that strong.
4.) Our coaching staff is still inept: besides all the usualy dump and chase etc... Why in the world was there a freshman line with Vargas, Pottaco, and McIntosh tonight. They were out when Michigan scored, and not even out with the top D pair. Vargas has only played in two games before Michigan and had very little playing time in those games.
the lines should have been something like
Sexton-Solway-Svendsen
Tiesling-Kantola-Vargas
Pottaco-Boyd-Dee
Petruska-McIntosh-Perkin
BG did do some things right:
1) Spratt was amazing again tonight, he was tested with lots of shots and made some big saves to keep the game tied at 0 and after Mich. scored to keep it a 1 goal game. This was probably the best two games I've seen Spratt play.
2) BG played a hard hitting physical game. BG out hit Michigan and limited their fast odd man chances. It was very impressing that even our little guys were making some big hits.
3) Our Penalty kill as usual was solid, this weekend BG held Michigan scoreless on the power play.
All in all I was disappointed with how BG played last night, Spratt kept it a winnable game but you can't win if you don't put the puck in the net.

I'm going to agree about the refs. Though I'm not saying that's the reason we lost, I was left speechless a few times when the puck bounced from the goalie's glove, onto the ice several feet away and was on a player's stick when it was whistled dead. The crowd didn't like that too much, especially since the goalie was up and there were two of our guys right there that could have scored five-hole. But anyway, I felt bad for a few of our guys who actually had to check themselves more than twice (Solway included) because they had high-sticks to the neck and face. I think that is unacceptable and pretty dangerous.
I'm also going to agree about the Michigan fans. I understand doing your goal chants and having fun and I like that about other fans being in the building, but some of them were just flat out mean. Especially before that second goal was waved off. I saw "cry-baby" faces and some pretty ugly words thrown around. And then the group of them chanting at our boys when they stood in front of the student section...maybe it's just me being sensitive, but it made me really mad. Bitter football fans is right.
I also thought even though we didn't have a lot of chances, that some of the boys played really hard. it's not fair to group every offensive and defensive player in the same category...but anyway, i had a lot of fun at the game and it was exciting to watch I thought. Especially Tomas flattening that Michigan player....

reality...
SBK- absolutely! I was saying all of those things last night during and after the game and I had just come on here to type them all, but you summed it all up. So, get out of my head! HAHA!
One of the things that I disagree with though...At least PART of the top defensive pairing were on the ice when Michigan scored. At least from the angle that I was sitting at, it actually looked like Michigan's goal went in off one of those guys...I'd have to watch the tape to know for sure and I don't have the NHL channel so I may never know.
The line combos are a complete joke and again proof that this coaching staff doesn't have a CLUE how to utilize the players that they have. I just don't understand how you can make a kid a healthy scratch when he directly lead to an actual PP goal (I know...those are a foreign idea to this coaching staff) in a hostile environment like Yost and replace him with 3 freshman that get a grand total of about 1 minute of playing time. It just doesn't make any sense. If you don't believe me about the goal on Friday, I would direct you to MGOBLUE.com and look at Friday's "highlights." I'm not trying to disparage Vargas, Potacco or McIntosh in any way but what sense does it make to dress them to play them for 1 minute?
The refs were not consistant, that is not in dispute, but they weren't as bad as the ones the week before. They absolutely blew calls...both ways...the 10 minute misconduct situation on Bailen will continue to be a joke, the fact that the disallowed goal even had to be disallowed or reviewed is enough to make someone shake their head, the quick whistles on the saves that Sauer made should be reviewed by the CCHA. However, they are NOT the reason that this game wasn't even close in any way except for on the scoreboard. We can thank Jimmy Spratt for that closeness.
On the subject of the Michigan fans...yes, they are arrogant snobs, they always have been. The ones sitting behind me knew little or nothing about hockey. Most of them were remarking on how different the Falcons looked compared to Friday, they were astonished. That, I agree with them on. The height of their arrogance showed through when our alma matter was playing after the game, they began to sing their fight song. Disgusting. And I let them know how I felt about it.
All in all, Friday's win was great, Saturday was back to reality. If you don't get quality scoring chances, you aren't going to win. Congrats to Jimmy on a great weekend. I hope he continues to play well...we need the 4 points against LSSU if we have hopes of moving out of the CCHA cellar!
