Potvin’s death ruled suicide
Saturday, February 11, 2006
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The death of former NHL player Marc Potvin has been ruled a suicide.
Potvin, once an assistant coach for Jackson Local Schools and a minor league hockey coach for the Adirondack Frostbite, used a belt to hang himself from a shower curtain rod in a Kalamazoo hotel room Jan. 13, police Sgt. Scott Merlo said Friday.
Authorities waited until toxicology tests results were in before releasing the cause of Potvin’s death.
Potvin, 38, was found in his hotel room just hours before his United Hockey League team was to play. Police said he had a blood-alcohol content of 0.15 percent — nearly twice the legal limit for drunken driving in Michigan — at the time of his death.
Potvin divided his time between Glens Falls, N.Y., and North Canton, where his wife, Maria, and their two children lived.
At the time of his suicide, Potvin was in his second season as the head coach of the Frostbite.
Previously, he was a ninth-round selection of the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings. After being drafted in 1986, Potvin played in the league for nine seasons and appeared in 121 professional games.
He played for the Red Wings, Los Angeles, Hartford and Boston during his career. He was also a member of the Kings’ 1993 Stanley Cup runner-up team.
He left the NHL after the 1995-96 season. He also played and coached in the American Hockey League.
A native of Ottawa, Potvin attended Bowling Green State University from 1986-1990. He met his wife at the university.
