Steve Mears, BGSU '02, BGRSO alum and former play-by-play announcer for Falcon Hockey on WBGU was announced today as the new radio play by play voice of the New York Islanders. He goes to New York from the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs (Buffalo Sabres) of the CHL. As a recent grad, this rapid ascent to the NHL is truly remarkable for such a young broadcaster, and it's a proud day for student radio sports here at WBGU. Here are three links from the Shreveport paper, the Mudbugs website and the Isles website:

Bartt Davis - one of the best hockey play by play announcers we ever had. He started straight out of HS but WFOB wouldn't give him a permanent position....just hockey. Therefore he took a job at the Sentinal Tribune.Redwingtom wrote:Whew! I was afraid you were going to say Greg Franke![]()
BTW - Who was the falcon hockey radio announcer back in the day? Wasn't it Glen somebody? I am remembering Glen Cerny (sp?) Is that correct?

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Glen Cerny was the voice of Falcon Hockey in the early 80's including the National Championship game in 1984. Jim Tichy of channel 24 had a great piece on the Monday after the National Title Game. He included Glen's call of Gino's goal. Glen was in my mind the most professional and enjoyable of all the announcers of Falcon Hockey. I still watch Tichy's piece and the National Title game each summer. I talked to Jim Tichy at a BG Cincinnati football game in the early 90's and thanked him for the piece. He told me that he kept a copy of that for his personal collection. He was wearing a brown sport coat with an orange sweater that night on TV. A true class Falcon Alum.

That was the year I started watching/listening to the games. I remember Glen but didn't listen to him long enough to become attached to his work. Bartt, however, I did. Off the radio he didn't have much of a personality, but he did his homework and was always dead on with his call of the game which I very much appreciated.Hockey John wrote:Glen Cerny was the voice of Falcon Hockey in the early 80's including the National Championship game in 1984. I'm certainly not surprised. Steve was quite a talent - to be honest, it would have been an easy bet that he land this/similar job!
Steve, if you're out there, CONGRATULATIONS!

I remember Glen VERY well!! At first I didn't care for Bartt because I liked Glen's call so much. Hockey John, I would LOVE a copy of that news piece that Tichy did!! I don't think I ever saw it!BGFan wrote:That was the year I started watching/listening to the games. I remember Glen but didn't listen to him long enough to become attached to his work. Regarding Bartt's calls of the game, eventually, I did learn to love his calls of the game!! I especially enjoyed the fact that he really knew the referees and their style of call. He wouldn't hesitate to poke a little fun at them or complain about a bad call when it was well deserved!!
