Orange/White Game Today

Post by BGDrew »

Just a reminder to anyone near BG, the hockey team will be holding their annual Orange/White game at the Ice Arena from 3:30-5:30.

I just got back, and there's a few things I noticed:

1. Goaltending will be the strength of this team.
2. There's a BUNCH of Freshmen on this team. I think I heard something like 12-14.
3. One player will not be making the squad this year due to having too many players.
4. Spratt looked solid, as did the Frosh goalies. One of the Frosh had the Falcon design on his pads.
5. The new boards/officials area looks great.
6. Paluch seemed to just stay up in the Pressbox and take some notes during the scrimmage.
7. Next year, I'd like to see more skill competitions.

Overall, it's way too early to see how this team is going to be. We're young but definitely seem to have some speed.

Good recap. Here's the official stuff from the website:
http://bgsufalcons.cstv.com/sports/m-ho ... 06aac.html

I agree with the goaltending assessment. Spratt looked really good. He was quick, followed the puck well, and put himself in the right place over and over. Both freshman goalies (Neville and Greer) had some impressive stops and moves as well. Matsumoto looked incredible. He will definitely make some noise around the league this year!! Erikson had a rocket shot from the point that was reminiscent of the kind that Blake used to do when he was here. It made a LOUD noise off of Neville's (I think he was in goal at the time) blocker and seemed to knock him back a bit. Meloche's backhand goal was a nice one too!

I would like to see more skills stuff too! I remember they had a "hardest" shot competition once. They used a radar gun to clock the shots. I am sure if people suggest ideas, the coaches might consider them for next year.

GO ICERS!!
"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Has anyone ever tried tailgating before a hockey game? Or would that just be silly?
Yeah right girl!

No.

Perhaps in the dead of winter but otherwise I don't know why you couldn't.
We generally go to the Center Ice lounge and put down a few prior to the game and between periods so tailgating never really seemed like a good idea. Why freeze and drink when you can stay warm and drink? :-D

If goaltending will be the strength, I'm a bit worried. I liked Neville and predict he'll get some starts.

Looking at scores in the 1970's and '80s, I conclude that BG did not rely on the defense and goaltending in the glory years. Instead, the Falcons scored and scored some more. The team relied on Masters and Sigalet for 6-7 years but didn't have the firepower to overcome the porous defense. BG's scoring has improved in the last few years, but not enough to overcome the still-porous defense and weaker goaltending.

Let's hope they step up like the current juniors did in 2005-05.

Agreed. But let's not let that prevent us from speculating! Wait, I'm not sure I agree about the speed. I've been hearing people say BG has speed for several seasons now, and I don't see it on the ice. Maybe I don't know what to look for.

Go Falcons!

Niz- If you are 21 join the Falcon Club, as a current student you could join for $50 bucks- this would get you in to the Pavilion at football games at to Centre Ice at hockey, a great value. At football the "beer" is free, and at hockey the usual selection of Coors Light, Labbatt, and Guiness are very moderately priced. Go in before the game, zip in at the intermissions and don't forget to tip those behind the bar!

$50 is something I sadly can't do right now.
