WMU @ BGSU, 1/5/07, BGSU Ice Arena, TV: Fox Sports Detroit
Hey gang,
Second half of the CCHA gets underway and the Falcons have a good chance here to get 3-4 points out of this series. The better play in the tournament leaves me optimistic that the boys can get things turned around. This one's on TV too for those who can get it. GO ICERS!!

Before anyone asks, no, Fox Sports Detroit isn't available in BG unless you have Dish or DirecTV. So, why not come out to the arena?

Ok..just finished watching the first period. Not a bad effort overall but our defensemen are sooooo sloooooow. Good penetration and puck movement by the guys up front but they need to work harder.
We had a 5 on 3 for a minute and looked horrible. Those are the opportunities that they need to take advantage of...
Down a goal going into the second...

School is still out.
GREAT WIN! I was telling McConvey in the chatroom that a sweep would be huge for this team.
It sounds as though the game is beginning to "slow down" a bit for the freshmen. Good news. I somehow think we're seeing the impact of the assistant coaches.

Awesome! I couldn't be around to listen to this game, but I was pleasently shocked to pull up gametracker and see a 5-1 final!
I was checking out Paula's article just now to see what her prediction was for this series, and I found this nice quote about BG after the OHC:
"While the Falcons ended the first half with a nine-goal output in Fairbanks, they really are doing almost everything but scoring. There are other little things — passes seem off, and the team doesn't seem to play together as a team — but I never got the impression that the players are down or that they've given up. In fact, there appeared to be good chemistry among the players, on the bench and after the games. Being around them and watching them play, you just get the feeling that they're this close to being much more competitive."
That last part is very encouraging to read!

I was out with my dad in Toledo watching this one, and it seemed after the boys got the first goal they really started to play better. My dad thinks this win is very big to set the tone for the stretch run, and the boys tonight showed some good work, played as a team and most importantly gained some much needed confidence.
I have to compliment FSD on their broadcast too, it was nice to see them show a lot about BG even though a Michigan team was playing. My dad started ranting when they showed the old footage about how hard it was to get tickets back in the 80s and that he hopes it can get back to that very soon.
I was really proud of this team tonight, there's no where else to go but up in the second half and the team definitely showed some guts and determination to win tonight.
SWEEP THE BRONCOS TOMORROW NIGHT!!

First, I got knocked out of my usual spot at center ice in the press box and got moved to the scout desk. I didn't get too many good looks at the goals because of that. However, you could just tell that things (as already mentioned here) are slowing down for the players. Granted, we weren't playing a Miami but Western is a very physical team that can wear you down. The goals tonight for the most part just seemed to be academic to the guys and that's something which has been missing this year.
Now, with that said you can't throw a parade over 2 conference wins in a row. I heard a great quote from Coach Cole tonight where he said the players decided tonight was the time to start climbing. You have to knock teams off one at a time to get strong come late February/March.
While there weren't many students there, I was impressed with how many "townie's" we got for the game. Hopefully we see more students there tomorrow night.
Great win for the team tonight, but like I said: you can't celebrate too much yet because we're only half way there.

Great win by the team tonight! After Schmitty scored that tying goal, they went all out the rest of the game!! I was REALLY impressed with the effort!! Kantola had an awesome night!! Fantastic goals by Whitmore and Matsumoto!!!!
The crowd was small, but not surprising with the fact that the students weren't back yet. Let's hope for a bigger crowd tomorrow night!!!!
VERY SPECIAL CONGRATULATIONS to Jonathan Matsumoto for his 100th CAREER POINT tonight!!!
GO ICERS!!!
SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP 'EM!!!!!

"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."
