They won't win another game this season. This program needs a total facelift, and I for one would like to see all of the coaches gone. We must be recruiting players from the worst junior hockey teams in Canada and they're probably no better than some of the better high school players in the area.

I wouldn't go that far
No question that we need a new coach. I don't think anyone on this board will disagree with that now. As far as the players are concerned, I wouldn't go that far. There is still a world of difference between these guys and high school players. I think it is just a poisoned atmosphere right now. We have less-talented players in an environment where losing has become expected and accepted.jpfalcon09 wrote:They won't win another game this season. I dont think that anyone is saying that some of our 21 year old freshman are worse than HS players, the point that myself and others are trying to make is why dont we have more local talent. Plenty of Cleveland and Toledo kids play juniors after HS and are making significant contributions on their college teams. If we are willing to get dominated with random canadian guys, why dont we recruit hevier in the midwest? Just take a look at Sinkewich who played HS at ED's in Cleveland. Unger came up as well in Cleve, and Bronson another local kid, these are our most physical players. At least if we recruit local we know what we are getting and it is not another coach from 3,000 miles away filling Pooch's head with stories of how good his 3rd line center is.
When we look around the league the last few years and see local guys like Slater, Fritsche, Goebel, Kalenicki, Graham do we even go after these kids or do we just go back to the trusty Alberta Junior Hockey League and find some 21 yera old frosh who is more interested in going to Ziggys after losing to Western Mich than actually becoming a better hockey player.

Does anybody here have a better handle on exactly what the recruiting efforts have been like? I don't know where Paluch and company go to try to find players. I don't know that they didn't make a solid effort to land some of the guys Dannyk listed. I guess it is always a fine line between going after the top talent available and risking getting burned when they go somewhere else.
On that note, if any of the former players would care to share stories about their recruitment, that would be cool.

I love when people think that college athletes should just spend every waking moment of their lives working on their sport.

Not every waking moment but combined with school, hockey should be their other main focus. There is nothing wrong with going out for a drink but when our record is 3-20 or whatever you cant tall me that hockey should maybe take a bit more of a focus.
Similar to when your headlights are out and your muffler is dragging, instead of buying a new tv, bring the car into the shop.

So after 60 minutes (120 if you include Friday's nights when the players aren't allowed to go out) of a game you expect the players to study tape/practice for another 2 hours? Usually the team is back at it at 8am on Sunday anyways.

Drew,
My brother coaches on the club team and he mandates that they watch film of every game to better themselves and so they can see their mistakes. We're not saying that every hour of the week should be spent on hockey, but the only way to improve as a team is to actually see on tape what you are doing wrong. I'm sure the team does something in that capacity, at least I hope so.
As for the caliber of players here, I intended that they're certainly playing no better than top high school hockey players. There's no excuse for scoring none or one goal a game for 6 games in a row, some of that is coaching, but some of it is also work ethic, pride and caring by the players. If the players are tanking the season solely based on bad coaching, then they undoubtedly don't feel any shame in going out and embarrassing themselves night in and night out.
My brother feels that the club team can give the varsity a run for their money, and that's pretty concerning considering they're "non-scholarship" athletes. I'd certainly like to see how that game would turn out.

Then f**k it. Let's do it. Club team wins, Pooch is fired immediately. Varsity wins, then Pooch keeps his job and is evaluated at the end of the season. They make movies out of that kind of sh*t, and the fact that it has come to this type of conjecture is totally disgusting to me. That would certainly be more entertaining than this season has turned out to be.jpfalcon09 wrote:

BGDrew, it's the mindset.
You may be right about the mindset, they don't spend all their free time on hockey. Perhaps they should, many of these players are on full scholarships (FREE EDUCATION) and for that priviledge Hockey should come close to first. As remote as it seems now, there are players on this team who wish to get to the next level and this attitude is not helping them.BGDrew wrote:I love when people think that college athletes should just spend every waking moment of their lives working on their sport.
There is a "who gives a F*** attitude from many players, which is like a cancer on any team. Worst of all the many captains lead the rush to Ziggy's, most of the time.
I doubt that the team is back at it at 8 am sunday morning. If you have ever been out in BG you will be able to find 3/4 of the team stumbling around outside ziggys and taco bell until 4 am. I find it hard to believe they are doing anything 4 hours later.
On the same subject many players are happy to be left behind on roadtrips so they can stay home and party all weekend. I think I would rather stay home and booze it up all weekend than ride a bus and watch terrible dump and chase hockey.

It's very simple: players are not hung over when they're playing the game. They are working hard during their scheduled practice times. Many times after losses the coaches will call for 8am video review on Sunday afterwards. Video takes awhile to break down since they only have one guy (who's doing it for free) doing it. Reviewing it immediately after a game is impossible.
Does anyone say anything when the Football players are out Saturday after a home loss? Was anything said to the men's soccer team for doing the same? Golf? You're dealing with 18-22 year olds who have to balance being athlete, school, and trying to have a good time during college. Honestly, do you think Red's team up in Ann Arbor always has practices after their losses?
